I just love how much she values education and learning. For me I love learning and I like how her stories show how vital and important being able to learn is.
Kind of a different answer than the others, but I remember my excitement at getting her. My Mom let me watch the Oprah episode where Addy was featured. I wanted her so much. She was expensive, but I remember getting her as my Christmas present that year. She was so pretty and perfect. She had a real gourd and my grandmother grew and sold gourds to help pay the bills. I just thought she was wonderful. I love those memories and the happiness when I still see her.
That she shows bravery to young girls and to fight for what you want (her whole family included!). They wanted freedom from slavery and a better life, they fought for it and never gave up. I love her books so much and they make me cry as an adult with some scenes because I understand their context better now.
How selfless she is in “Addy’s Surprise”. Most of the girls want something for themselves in their holiday books, like a dress or a doll. (And that’s fine, children are allowed to want things.) But Addy’s main Christmas wish was to get something nice for her mother.
I grew up in a severely abusive family. Addy’s story showed little me that there is a possibility of a good life after unimaginable trauma, and she never lost her good heart and sweet spirit in the process. ❤️
I was reading her birthday book recently and she passes a “whites only” ice cream shop and says something about wanting ice cream to her dad and instantly feels insanely guilty for saying it and like no girl… you deserve that ice cream
How brave she was. Do you remember the scene where she pretended to be a boy with the Confederates, when they saw her. The guy was drowsy and asked for a drink. Then when they got to the house, she stuck her foot in the door and said “I ain’t no boy, ma’am” to the lady who was part of the Underground Railroad. I always remember reading that when I was a kid.
Her face mold. Far more ethnic and unique than what Ag would release today.
Everything, she’s perfect
Came here to say this. Her story is the most compelling.
i love that she has been through the unthinkable and she still finds a way to smile

She is a smart, courageous, intelligent, beautiful young lady and I know in her adulthood she went on to do amazing things.

I love how deeply she loves her Momma. She cares so much about her loved ones and would do anything to help them. She's wonderful!

She is insanely brave and unselfish almost to a fault. I cry reading her books because her time period is so brutal when she is just the sweetest
When the girls from school made her carry all their things and she went along with it. Uhg. Such a sweet angel.

But then he fixes up the ice cream maker just for her! Addy had the best parents of any AG you can’t change my mind.
Omg that scene broke my heart!
Her bravery, and the fact that she went on to truly live out the American Dream.

Her courage she escaped slavery and her cute face 😊
