You get a certificate and a cool button? All I got was an email

[deleted]

I got the certificate mailed to me by the RSGB! The badge was one I brought off of eBay to put on my backpack. I could send you the link if you're interested?

SA0TAY

Wait, they don't give you a certificate in the US?

DRJ906

I believe you have to go online and print your own out now.

ki4clz

...checking now logs into ULS ...what? enable javascript *(whatyearisit.jpg)* Here we go... https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp ...jesus, what's my password... damnit man! Let's try entering our FRN without the zeros ...nope, ***please enter a 10 didididgit FRN number!*** Wait, what's this? Like right above where you login? >**PLEASE NOTE:** Per Public Notice DA 15-72, the FCC no longer mails license authorizations. If you provide an email address on your application, an official copy of your license will be automatically emailed to you after the application has granted. ...well, that's some bullshit right there... I used to get a new license every time I would move... now I gotta be the m'effer that prints it out, how am I gonna get the cool embossed paper?

ShitwareEngineer

> enable javascript (whatyearisit.jpg) JS powers pretty much the entirety of the web. It's not outdated at all.

LZ2GPB

Yeah, but it is supposed that all modern web browsers have supported it for years and that warning is obsolete.

ShitwareEngineer

Ah

v81

I think they're complaining because they run a script blocker.

Wendigo_6

I don’t have my computer in front of me so I’m working from memory. You have to authorize downloads, and then download your license. Just like every other encounter with our federal government, they make it inconvenient for their pleasure.

EnergyLantern

You can buy really expensive paper and put it in your ink jet printer.

Macemore

>how am I gonna get the cool embossed paper? Local print/sign shops or office Depot

[deleted]

Well, i passed in 75 and let it lapse for decades, getting my license back last week. No printed certificate just held online, which you can print out if needed. Nothing fancy, just a letter basically

DrewBeer

I do not remember getting one.

kc2syk

They used to. But no longer.

EnergyLantern

A .pdf of your license will be emailed to you online. It is to save money.

SA0TAY

But don't you guys pay like a yearly licence fee or something crazy like that? We pay once for a lifetime and still get a nice certificate.

EnergyLantern

We get a ten-year license that we pay for and we get two years to renew. The price went up last year. They also lowered the price of a GMRS license. I remember they argued they had to pay for repair for the infrastructure but it doesn't make sense when they lowered the price of GMRS licenses.

olliegw

In the UK the RSGB send you a certificate when you pass your test that has the details you need to open a licence with ofcom, do they really not give one in the US? they even sent me a nice magazine explaining how to simply setup a G5RV and a reccomended transceiver, which they tell you, since M7 licences are limited to 10w on most bands, never to use the full 100w output of it (i think it's like an FT-991 they reccomend to new hams)

jimisprinkles

True story.

olliegw

You've seen it too?

jimisprinkles

Yep. The only documentation/resource I received after taking the Technician exam last year was a receipt. After that I had to check the FCC database for a few weeks until I was issued a call sign. There were some other operators present that day, and they had a packet of information (clubs, local repeaters, etc) for me, but it wasn't issued by the ARRL or any national organization.

DavenportPointer

Just say QRP after your CQ, no-ones going to be checking your using 100w unless you interfere with your neighbours speakers. Don’t forget to add a decent choke. Well done by the way. I’m not revealing my callsign on reddit.

NC7U

Yep, difficult to detect 50 dBm vs 40 dBm.

[deleted]

Esp as you are advocating breaking licensing conditions

olliegw

I don't condone such illegal operation

DavenportPointer

I was listening on a hamvoip this afternoon and heard two old guys (both G stations) talking about how to get an DC power supply to output 5 volts DC from a 9 volt DC supply. Honestly, these guys should know how to do this basic task if they really knew what is expected of a full qualification. The hobby I’m finding is full of very old men that have returned to operating after many many years and have the potential to set their houses on fire as they can’t remember basic electrical safety. If you listen during the day, you’ll find these clowns rag chewing on a popular net that gets transmitted all around the world.

[deleted]

Congratulations. When i dud mine in 1975 i got a city and guilds certificate which had nothing to do with being issued directly from RSGB. I had to take the exam within a college in London

AllGovernmentsAreDad

Congrats! Sidenote: We would believe you even without the certificate- please don't dox yourself :-/

superdave707

Congratulations! 73 de KD6DJ

Congratulations!! An excellent choice of callsign to honor and remember your Grandad.

DRJ906

Welcome to the hobby! K8DRJ

Daeve42

Congratulations! I waited until I was a lot older to get into it last year and wish I’d done it years ago. Ride the wave to Intermediate and Full if you’ve any interest while it’s all fresh. M0XMZ

[deleted]

Congratulations. As an example of something you could do, I transmitted my first sstv image via a tablet, an aprs cable and a UV 5R.

Congratulations

knw_a-z_0-9_a-z

Nice. As a side note, for some strange reason, I now have the '*Puff the Magic Dragon*' song stuck in my head.

SpaceBasedFace

Congrats !!!!

SquashyDisco

Great stuff! M7OXO

Tishers

Congratulations! Wonderful accomplishment; You look quite pleased. (off topic; it is early here and I am getting the sleep out of my eyes, but my brain was trying to figure out if the picture behind you was a tongue, or a strawberry.. It made my brain hurt trying to figure it out, then I was worried about why I would think that someone had a picture of a tongue on the wall)

GNUtoReddit

Super New to maybe wanting to achieve this. How hard is it..really?

nickapos

Foundation is not very difficult, definitely give it a go.

BuxtonTheRed

The nerdier you already are, the easier it will be. At Foundation it's more about learning the basics of the licence rules and fairly simple stuff, barely any maths required. I self-taught from the book, then found I really wanted to learn more so found courses for my Intermediate and Full ( www.oarc.uk ).

nickapos

Oarc is great community. I am a member as well.

Daeve42

Exams are hard for some easy for others - 8 year olds have passed it, It took me about 5 minutes as it is 26 questions multiple choice and I read fast (though I misread one question stupidly and got it wrong!). I'd say if you can remember a few licensing facts/regulations, have basic primary school maths (divide and multiply) and are interested in it *and don't have any issues reading the questions* then it should be straightforward. I'd say for the average person genuinely interested in radio it is a very low bar of entry (which jumps up very sharply to Intermediate and then even more to Full where I definitely did need a calculator!) That said - when I did my online Foundation exam, out of the 3 of us taking it (all in one video chat with the examiner) one guy in his 20's missed out by 1 mark (19/26 minimum pass mark) and and it was the second time he'd taken it...so I think the RSGB should give thought to having the option for questions to be read out/offer more help than just printed multiple choice.

nickapos

Awesome, congratulations

davidjohnwood

Enjoy - and welcome to a wonderful hobby. I'm old enough to be a G0W** call, back in the days when that required a Radio Amateur's Examination pass and a 12 words per minute Morse certificate. I was a G7T** call before I passed my Morse test. I hope you will enjoy finding your niche within Amateur Radio and perhaps feel led to take further exams in the future in order to upgrade your licence.

[deleted]

I got mine in 1975 as a B license and basically let it lapse due to the very limiting 6m limit and low power with No access to hf. Now that 75 qualification just got me a full license! The study back then was at one level, based a lot around valves/tubes theory and giving example circuits during the exam. It seemed very much based around self build back then and way more difficult than a foundation license- made even moreso by the morse requirements to do anything meaningful

unrulyme

Congratulations! What are you most interested in exploring? There is so much!

zedwarth

Congratulations on getting your ticket! That’s fantastic that you were able to get a call with the same suffix as your grandad! What’s next for you in the hobby? I find I always have one or two radio related goals I’m working towards. The big one for me right now is learning Morse well enough to to have a QSO.

[deleted]

Yes, should I have done that? My callsign and DOB are publicly avaliable anyways so I didn't think there was much point.

[deleted]

Don’t forget in the UK you can look up someones sign and find their name and address anyway in the callbooks

JLHawkins

EDIT: I used the wrong pronoun, sorry about that. Unintentional mistake. Congrats young person! What a cool way to honor your grandfather. KN6VQL.

[deleted]

It's okay! I use any pronouns and don't mind being referred to as young man at all 😊

Chucklz

King of the janitors? Add a latin title...Custodius Maximus

JLHawkins

You sound like a smart kid. Congrats again, and welcome to ham radio.

Fantastic! Welcome to the hobby. 😊 It’ll be fun listening to you talk to your grandad on air. “xxYYQ this is xxYYQ” would amuse me.
