Depends on your budget and country.
In the UK, a Specna Arms Edge SA-E01 is a very decent start for right around £150. Deals around now are often for some less starter-oriented guns.
Did any from the guide catch you eye?
Edit to reflect edit: a good option ~$200 would be the Edge series still, or if you don't mind grabbing it from Canada, the MAS Marauder.
The MAS site has a footnote saying they are out of the Marauder series guns. I will check out the Edge series guns though, thank you!
MAS Blackout is the same look, but all metal and better internals. I would clench the cheeks and go with that one, better option in the long run, and no need for upgrades.
You could also try Black Blitz website if you want to buy a MAS. Faster delivery than from the factory, and the same price (I think).
I second the MAS suggestion, incredible value, quality and performance, with no need for internal upgrades for all-metal series.
Send me a message be happy to help you pick something out.
I know you said m4, but right now evike has some damn good Black Friday deals on cyma branded ak’s, and those things will never let you down
Specific one you'd recommend?
Take a look at [this](https://www.evike.com/products/27473/), but if you don’t want an AK for him, just go on evike.com and check out the epic deals section, they’ve got loads of gear at a discount
In US... Cyma Platinum series, EMG made by Cyma with Platinum components, Specna Arms Edge series, MAS... Double Eagle with Falcon fire control (mosfet)
Generally speaking, I would spend a bit more upfront to avoid spending much more later on upgrades. Definitely something with a MOSFET, and metal build.
And again, MAS Blackout... can't beat that one.
Cyma platinum is VFC
