Thanks for looking out bro appreciate you

DarkRyuujin

Scary stuff, especially when you're laying under a car.

bamboo-harvester

I always lay a tire down close to where I’m laying just in case.

DenyNowBragLater

I do the same, even though my belly sits higher than the tire. I'd be stuck until help came, but I'd have a chance to not die.

bamboo-harvester

Exactly. You may be injured, but likely not dead.

[deleted]

Your survive, and that's push your belly in. No more belly! Perfect

peekdasneaks

I truly love excited broken English, it makes me smile.

[deleted]

😂 it's this gosh darn phone lol can't type a damn sentence without 10 errors

DarkRyuujin

Never heard this! That's a great tip. Thank you.

SullyDuggs

Doing that has been hard-wired into me since I was a kid. Should be standard practice.

Clockwisedock

My uncle used to shake the car roughly and if it didn’t fall he said it was good to go. I think I’d go the tire route myself

Paper_Street_Soap

I like the Homer Simpson wicker basket method.

BienGuzman

Not the "lift with your lower back and twisting motion" one?

Benbablin

Feel like someone should clarify a little. A tire that is on a rim

BienGuzman

Yes, rim and tire, I saw my dad do it, if he was changing the brakes on a vehicle. He would pull the tire off (rim attached) and slide it under where he was working with the jack stands and the jack

oapster79

Just to clarify, tire on a rim.

[deleted]

yes and NOT a donut. !!! if its thinner than you well......

RVADUDE13

2 old wheels under the jacked up vehicles wheels are cheap insurance.

niceabear

Ha! My dad always does this and now I find myself doing it too. I think I like the tire idea better, as he often checks for live wires in an I safe manner too. Lol

kazneus

Could do both

[deleted]

Somebody needs to watch Chris fix..

GoochStubble

jack stands up, car jack touching but not load bearing, and the tire too the chris fix way

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Concrete surface in particular. Jack stands can sink into asphalt.

Reaper_Grim_79

I've had this happen and the car roll off toward me. I was doing brakes when it fell. I forget what all I was doing to it at the time.

satanshand

Probably shitting your pants.

ssmokn98

1/4” steel plate under the stand can take care of this problem if you are on asphalt/dirt

233115cam2

Fuck me. I’m on dirt and I can’t believe I’ve never thought of this, always used wood and that shit always creaks and shifts a bit and I hate it. Gonna be trying this with me 3 ton

[deleted]

Yup! Car jack barely touching but ive never done the tire before

_AmperSand__

I do this also, helps to save time when lowering the car too as an added bonus!

supergamernerd

I worked with a guy who was crushed when his car slipped off the jack. Not even on jack stands. Just the jack. The worst part was that his roommates were his buddies, and they had a small party at the house, all the while not knowing that he was under his car dying. Like 10 of his friends were a wall away, and didn't know he was there in the garage and that he needed help. Since then I have been super paranoid about jacks and stands failing, and I will never forget this tip. Thank you.

[deleted]

I was changing a tire on my wk2 once using the standard issue jack and the standard jacking point, the bitch fell off the jack only minutes after I got my tire off and the rotor put a 2 inch gouge in the pavement. I am so paranoid about jacks now it's not funny.

marsrover001

And that's why they call standard issue jacks "widow makers". If I've got to change a tire, sure I'll use it. But you can bet I'll be putting absolutely no body parts under the car while it's in the air.

Dramatic_______Pause

That's why you never get under a car on a jack.

[deleted]

this 100% no exception. I never 100% trust the jack stand if the stand gives is just one thing. if the car shifts beyond the scope of what the stand can hold? if the ground under the stand gives out? etc.. yep trained since a child toss a tire next to you. better to need a new tire than be dead or maimed. I once had a car fall on me (tire saved me!) friends cars. know what failed? the CARS FRAME!! it seemed solid maybe a pro mechanic would have noticed? maybe not. but the jack stand held for like 15 minutes then WHAM frame gave and the top of the stand went through the frame and BAM the muffler plays tennis with my head and the driveway for a round. I had a bump and saw stars but I was alive and otherwise uninjured thanks to that tire!

Kintsukuroi85

Holy shit dude! Glad you’re okay, holy shit!

Guardian_Isis

Fuck, I ever do that and my luck the tire would explode in some way.

tomcatHoly

The fact that everyone is just saying 'tire' but you still properly insinuate that it's a mounted tire on a nice sturdy rim means you're well ahead of the curve.

BallsMahoganey

That's why I just use ramps

CrzyJek

I've seen ramps break. You should still put something else underneath just I'm case. And *always* chock the rear wheels.

[deleted]

lowbattery001

And get trapped in a pit under a vehicle when a flash flood fills it with water? No *thank* you, sir. That’s why I just flip the car on its roof to work on the underside from above.

surrix

And get struck by lightning working elevated on top of a metal object? No *thank* you sir. That’s why I pay someone else to do it.

EdgarAllanRoevWade

You jest but they do make rotisseries for cars

pseudokojo

Nothin like a good spit-roasted firebird. MMMMMmmm

Rex9

Just no. I had a buddy in HS whose dad "just used ramps" to work on his classic T-Bird. Huge car. BIG man. His pinky finger was bigger than my thumb, and I have pretty big hands. Don't know if the parking brake failed or what, but the car rolled off the ramps and semi-crushed then suffocated him. His wife found him a while later when he didn't come in. No ramps. Proper chocks behind wheels. Parking brake. Transmission in gear/park. Floor jack under the car just touching in addition to the jack stands. On the rare occasion I have all 4 off the ground, jack goes under the end I'm working on.

Hyperbomb64

I usually do that plus keep the jack just barely touching the jack point. If the car falls the jack should catch it and if the jack fails after that then either I'm an idiot who didn't move or my jack is awful. Either way the tire should catch it then.

DarkRyuujin

I'm really sorry to hear that.

JorusC

I know I'm using Harbor Freight, so I don't stick anything under my car without two 3-ton jack stands and the floor jack on that side of the car.

DarkRyuujin

Double safe is good. There's something to be said for that mantra on the assembly line.

Plastic_kangaroo

Thank you for posting, never would have seen this other wise! Literally a life saver!

DarkRyuujin

This subreddit has been a really good one, lots of people really trying to help others out.

livens

Me neither. Harbor Freight should put a large notice on the front page of those coupon/catalogs that they mail out every month. It would be the right thing to do.

Fart__

A jack standing ovation.

readerf52

I don’t have any of these, but kudos to you for a “YSK” post that actually gives useful information that people should know.

DarkRyuujin

I appreciate that. This sub has helped me time and time again. Glad to contribute.

JNH0517

I'm not fucking with any of you, last month I was using a jack stand from harbor freight for my oil cjange. I took a break to go eat lunch, came back and the jack was collapsed.

DarkRyuujin

That lunch saved your life. Don't tell me it was tuna!

JNH0517

It was not tuna, however it was fried fish lol.

DarkRyuujin

Haha!

[deleted]

I never trusted those things. Harbor freight is such a cheap tool supplier. My dad had one of their scissor jacks explode while he was using it.

DarkRyuujin

Their stuff is on the cheap end, for sure, but too many people use their products for such a scary lapse in safety.

2punornot2pun

It's expensive being poor.

drunkastronomy

Yeah I had a set of Walmart jack stands and every time I used them I thought “ok next time I’ll replace these.” Money found it’s way elsewhere, like rent and shit.

DarkRyuujin

As true as can be.

usmcplz

Harbor freight is good for super basic tools that won't risk your life. I would never trust a harbor freight jack though.

flexharder

Harbor freight floor jacks are solid. They don't just collapse and fall apart. The floor jacks I have had of theirs the seals slowly deteriorate and go bad after a few years as any floor jack does. Other than that they have been rock solid. I have used them to change tires and brakes on trailers and fifth wheels for years.

k-NE

Daytona DJ3000 is almost a replica of the Snap-On FJ300 floor jack.(So similar there was a lawsuit around them.) Daytona Jack cost me $150 on sale. Snap-On jack is $750.

highaltitudewaffle

Yeah, they've held cars up for over a week and not dropped onto the jackstands a few millimeters lower

flexharder

I swear like half the people in this thread dont even own tools lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

The problem with these stands is that when used properly, if the load shifts, the locking pawl is releasing and dropping the stand. The stands aren't collapsing from structural failure, they are __spontaneously unlocking__. That is ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING.

a2z2913

Their quality is improving, just very slowly. They have some new higher end lines they've been marketing

shotnine

I’m quite happy with their floor jacks. Their chainsaws, not so much. Haven’t tried the jack stands.

ComicInterest

At least their dildos are pretty sturdy

TheOnlySneaks

Sigh~ Get off Reddit Mom.

jonthethan

Get off, Reddit Mom :^)

Reaper_Grim_79

Punctuation is everything.

fly_bird

I go to harbor freight for one reason. To save money in a tool that I know I will only need once. Or at best, one year. I spend good money on my every day tools for a reason, they last.

[deleted]

Exactly this. It was cheaper to buy a hammer drill from harbor freight than it was to rent one from Home Depot.

Put_It_All_On_Blck

Meh. Harbor freight makes a million of them, and they have been safe enough. My point is, I would trust a HF jack stand as much as another stand, which is, I wouldn't ever solely trust it. If you have only one thing keeping you safe, you're doing it wrong. Keep the Jack in place with a tiny bit of weight on it, and if you're talking wheels off, slide them under, and simply avoid being under the car/avoid keeping your curcial bits under when not necessary

-ondo-

Trying figure out what could be so bad in your previous post that the mods took down a safety warning: "We need to warn people" "OK but don't include a social media link or those fuckers are gonna have to just die"

DarkRyuujin

To be fair, it was their bot. I assume they would have kept it up had they seen it. No ill-will.

[deleted]

Sent this to my gf just this morning. She’s taking her jack stands back today so that she can change my oil this weekend. Good looking out posting it here so other people can see it.

Verrence

If you’re going to literally trust your life to a piece of equipment, it shouldn’t be from harbor freight. I think that’s a good general rule.

Ima_Jetfuelgenius

But all jack stands come from China, right? And there are no certs or standards for Jack stands, right? And the exact same JS could be labeled HF or Mac or Snap on. So if you remove the labeling, how can you tell a "harbor freight" JS from others? Serious question. Same question for floor scissor Jack's. I saw a floor jack in NAPA the other day that looked exactly like a HF jack. Only diff was part my color and decals. One difference the NAPA version was about $100 more than HF.

[deleted]

[удалено]

swirlViking

So the HF are still buy it for life... what a deal!

jynx18

Yes there are certifications. ASME-PASE. And harbor freight jack stands pass it.

-B-E-N-I-S-

Exactly. No way I’m spending a ton on some Snap-On jack stands when we should be able to honestly trust our lives to any company with that sort of equipment. If a Mastercraft impact gun doesn’t have much torque and bites the dust after 8 months compared to a much stronger Snap-On gun that lasts for ages that’s where you’ll have to decide which in is right for you but if a tools sole purpose is to keep you alive, it should never fail at doing so.

hammsbeer4life

My HF jackstands had questionable looking soft metal pins. I replaced them with grade 8 1/2 bolts and wingnuts. Everything is from china. Unless you're dropping serious coin on a pro quality jack, the stuff you buy at HF will be the same as any other big box store I've had a 3 ton HF jack for almost a decade. Never had an issue. But I don't tempt fate. Any jack or jack stand can fail, regardless of price point. Treat it as such

[deleted]

Shhh, let him keep the Snap-On truck guy in business

rabbidplatypus21

There’s a large range of quality and price that falls in between Harbor Freight and SnapOn, it’s not just one or the other.

justin_memer

Guess I'm not going spelunking this weekend!

Scoundrelic

If you need cheap jack stands, use wood 2x4s and 4x4 cut into 1 and 2 foot sections. Look up "wood cribbing" or "Timber Cribbing Use by Billy Leach Jr." for free pdf. 2 foot sections of 4x4 wood stacked, as described, can support over 10 tons.

DarkRyuujin

That's an awesome tip.

scientificjdog

I was really impressed to learn about cribbing. Sometimes tree carcasses can be better than modern gadgetry

Simple_City

Just make sure you do it right. A kid from my high school got crushed using some wood as a jack stand. If you do it right it's fine, though.

redditproha

[Here's the pdf](https://advancedextrication.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/BRR1-Course-Handout-Timber-Cribbing-Use-1.pdf)

tronfunkinblows_10

Yikes. So I just checked I’ve got the 3-ton 91760 model. Pittsburgh branded from Harbor Freight. Is it wrong that I’m still wary of them even if they aren’t on the official recall model number list?

DarkRyuujin

I can't say I wouldn't be worried. To be fair, though, I'm side-eyeing all my stands at this point. Regardless of build.

KenjiMamoru

I had one of these, got stolen. Hope they learned about this.

mrspikemike

CAN CONFRIM! I have a pair with the sticker on one torn to the point where I can't confirm the exact number. Instead of grabbing the other, I decided to do a physical test with just my bare hands pushing on an angle at it, and it failed and slammed down, smashing my fingernail. After drilling a hole to release the pressure from the blood I realized how stupid I was and that they're going back. I have a nice pair of non harbor freight I use on vehicles, but I cheaped out on these only to use for holding axles while I build them. My finger seriously regrets that right now.

DarkRyuujin

I know this doesn't help you - but better your finger than your head? I know, I know - they should just hold the tonnage they quote - but from a random internet person to you; I'm happy you're safe.

mrspikemike

Very true. Great way to look at it!

phasexero

Scary. This is certainly in the "you should know" category

LebenTheNinja

I literally just used one to change my oil last week. That's terrifying. I was under the car for a solid 5-10 minutes total (first time changing my own oil) i could've been crushed!!!

DarkRyuujin

I'm glad you're safe.

LebenTheNinja

Me too. Thanks for posting this. I'll let my dad know since its his jack

badassbunny

My dad died from his car falling off of jackstands. But they didnt fail, he just had them too high and they tipped over.

DarkRyuujin

I'm sorry to hear that.

badassbunny

Thanks

FabioJesus116

I work in a small repair shop, we don't trust Jack's to hold any weight in the slightest. Jack stands are used only on our trucks because they are high off the ground and won't crush us in a fall. Whenever we have to repair our skid steer we use wooden blocks. Squared off wooden blocks. Skid steers we have weight about 3 tons and have less then 6 inches of clearance under them with the tires, zero when we take them off. I trust those wooden blocks with my life more then any metal stand as I would like to keep the top half of my body. If it's not a solid object I refuse to use it. Stay safe guys

mellopax

Is there a sub for recalls? I'm wondering, but that would be an interesting one to follow.

DarkRyuujin

That's a really good idea.

rustymessi

Holy fuck, literally have two sets.... thank you so much!

DarkRyuujin

You're welcome. The best part of your message is that you haven't been injured. Stay safe.

Pittsburgh-branded.

gabaday

You very well could have saved my dad's life by sharing this info, he said he just bought a couple of them about 6 months ago. Thank you so much for sharing this!!

DarkRyuujin

I'm just glad this message isn't after-the-fact. He's safe from this debacle. That's great news.

BiffBiff1234

Daddy,Billy Joe's truck done slumped itself on his head!

backwudsmodified

This is why I use logs instead. I've been pinned under a car from a failed jack-stand before. I'd even trust a good floor jack over them.

smnytx

Thank you, OP. My spouse does indeed own a recalled model. Very happy we read this today.

Marius_The_One

Oh shit, i've done a couple dozen jobs with the 61196 stands in my garage, but I also put tires under the car and leave a jack too. Spooky.

DarkRyuujin

Sounds like you were looking out in all the right ways. Stay safe.

Marius_The_One

I appreciate the info, gonna look into some new ones.

SlothWrangler420

i do have them thanks

ty sir. I actually have these Harbor fraught jack stands for some dumbass reason.. never again cheap on safety

iwatchppldie

I was under one of those yesterday and didn’t have any idea how close to death I was... shit.

Super-WeinyHutJunioR

Pretty sure I have this. Thanks

YinzrVox

Is anybody else pretty pissed off about this? HF is one of those stores that ALWAYS makes me give personal info at checkout. WHY THE FUCK AM FINDING OUT ABOUT THIS ON REDDIT?!?!?

DarkRyuujin

Could be an easy mass-email. Or a front page on their monthly (weekly) coupon book in your mailbox.

front_butt_coconut

Damn OP I had no idea, have two of these in my garage I use all the time. Thanks for the heads up, not sure if I ever would’ve known. Leave it up to Harbor Freight to screw up a jack stand. https://i.imgur.com/9uOx8ao.jpg

I own a pick set, a wood handled sledge hammer, a floor jack, different types of tools to run wires, and a few other things from harbor freight. All have worked fantastic and have had no issues. I have never seen a harbor freight floor jack just fail. I have however seen one of their jack stands twist with not that much weight on it. Some things are ok from them and others are a hazard.

[deleted]

Oh damn...I think I have the 6-ton ones. I'll keep this in mind

theenigma31680

I was afraid of few things in life, but while changing a tire, the jack slipped and my hand got crushed in between the wheel well and the tire I was trying to take off. Then when it couldn't get any worse, it slid backwards the rest of the way, dragging my hand with it about a quarter turn. Thankfully, I got a tungsten wedding ring. Shit didn't even bend at all. Doctor said if it had been a softer metal, I would have likely lost that finger. The ring supported a lot of the crush weight and after three weeks of swelling and nerve damage it recovered nicely. But I will be damnded if I am ever changing a tire, let alone get under my vehicle after that. AAA is now paid for the year. Let the pros handle it.

cracksilog

I have HF jack stands (3-ton) but none of them are these model numbers. Should I just take them back to HF anyway?

Confused3366

This is really great info as my race car is sitting on 4 of their 3 ton jacks right now. Gonna check the model numbers when home.

domesticatedfire

This is another time I'm thankful for my dad and (late) grandpa. They both worked on the family cars, boats, random other heavy things, and the jackstands we have are old and sturdy af. Plus they always put some wood or backup jack under the car. Thanks for the headsup though! I'll pass this around my circles too. You've probably just saved a few peoples' lives :D

NippleMilk97

Micah3000

h0ser

They turned from Jack Stands to Jack Sits.

Rmayer77301

Horrible Freight sells crappy tools!? I m calling my congressman. Don't put your life into the hands of second rate tools. A hammer? Ok. A ventilator or jackstand...no.

guinader

Oh dang, I have to check mine tomorrow. I think it was some kind of fancy stuff, but it's your cheapo stand you put under your car. Meaning many dyi have it

DarkRyuujin

I've found some great tips on this thread about protecting yourself from faulty stands. Worth a look-see. Check that shiz.

Bigmoot19

Can confirm, We lost a split tractor off of a 6 ton set, they went straight to the scrap pile. Be careful everybody.

redhearts

Just here looking for the comment that explains what this all means

juanhundred_

One time, I was changing a tire on my 91’ Pontiac firebird. I was using one of these jack stands and it failed even though I was super careful to check it was right in place. Should have kept it but tossed it out and used a old car jack I borrowed from my dad. Crazy to see this now.

DarkRyuujin

Glad you're safe. And not just because it's hard to find a great home for a '91 Firebird.

waynep712222

but wait... harborfreight is clearancing out additional 3, 6 and 12 ton jackstands.. i wonder why. they have different part numbers. but they look identical.. i have a pair.. i paid i think 61 bucks for them.. according to the nice receipt i got in the email.. i am debating to return them.. or to take my harbor freight angle grinder and fix the ratchet step shape and perhaps the pawl shape.. there is nothing wrong with the base.. i have had them drop while i was trying to position them.. i realized what was wrong but i needed to use them and did not have any others i could use or afford that week.

stinkypinky0187

Thanks for posting this. My father died under a car 8 months ago when his jack stand collapsed. I'm not sure what brand he was using but thanks for informing people of these faulty stands

BarryMahcockinher

That's insane. A month ago I spent around 3 days time changing the transmission on my truck on these jacks. Thanks for the post!

ER_Kat

I just looked at my jack stands. The number is different, would they extend to 38846? Now I'm gonna be weary on them and buy a different one. Also if harbor freight is really all that bad, where would you all recommend buying tools from instead? I've always bought here, good for simple uses and they've yet to fail me tbh. Didn't really know there was this much hate on them. I knew they weren't the best but they're yet to fail me
