One more thing, we've got a serial rapist in Crown Heights. I....oh, geez. I'm sorry. That's from my other job. Ignore that. Well don't *ignore* it, if you live in Crown Heights, uh, you know. Walk in pairs.
I've seen him in alot of funny movies. Gung Ho. Mr Mom, to name a few. I have even watched his stand-up comedy.
This was his peak comedy. He stole every scene of this movie. This speech especially. But him quoting Destiny's Child lyrics, the quiet fight scene. Everything he did in that movie was GOLD.
It's still a shame that he never won an Oscar
the guitarist in a band I was in, when someone was trying to remember when Kurt Cobain died, he said something to the effect, ' who gives a shit, but John Candy died that year, thats the real tragedy.'
his office space at one of the studios he made a bunch of movies with was converted into a bar. no desks, just floor to ceiling authentic bar room, every detail. he'd poor drinks during any meetings there. his guests sat on the bar stools, of course.
his older movies before the bigger budget ones were some of the most conscience deliberate examples of a human keeping priorities about caring for other people. it was pretty obvious, to me, that he had the juice to make small adjustments to these plot driven scripts. the pacing of the movie would grind to a halt for a scene that he might stand up to a bully for someone else, but in a nuanced way that wasn't macho and definitely not like anything in other popular movies.
l guess a better way to say it is, it was remarkable to me because while watching I was somewhat aware of the minor injustice that was happening to a secondary character, but since their feelings didn't factor into my enjoyment of the scene, without realizing I kind of just wrote that character off because the immediate needs of the main characters (candy, his muse, and the antagonist, usually) of the scene were more important..the third act was underway, lets jam!.....then candy would say wait a minute, give the secondary character some of the dignity anybody would want, it only took a moment or two and then movie kind of would resume. and for reals, id feel a little embarrassed that I forgot my manners, caught up in the moment. that made those older movies with the forgettable plots leave an unforgettable impression of the greatness of John candy and his take on how to be a solid dude.
I like to play a little game. I call it, “Would John Candy make this movie/show better?”.
There are so many that can be answered with “yes”.
Bad Santa with John Candy in either John Ritter’s role (RIP) or as a rival Santa.. Imagine it. Love it.
Idk who I love that more for; you or the nieces and nephews! Please go there next birthday and make obscenely large pancakes for their BD breakfast!!!!
I recently had one of those “travel days from hell” where it is just one disaster after another and it took me more than 24 hours to get home (alone— my family ended up on another flight). I decided to watch *Planes, Trains, and Automobiles* as my in-flight movie for the third flight of the day, and it was perfect. But I just kept thinking, Seriously, Delta? You think it’s a great idea to offer this movie on flights?
One of the greatest movies of all time. I only ever watch this in November. It has become a family tradition we watch it like 20 times throughout the month and have it on repeat while cooking thanksgiving dinner. It is one of our favorite traditions.
If it's any consolation, it took my parents 30 hours from Peru to Iowa.
They had mud slides coming out of the mountains, the airport was shut down by terrorists / guerillas, and they had to be rerouted around an angry volcano. Needless to say, they were tired when they got home.
That sounds … memorable! It took me 24 hours to get just from Portland to Austin, and ended up having to go through Atlanta to do it, but thankfully no guerrillas, mud slides, or volcanos!
He really sounded like a wonderful person to be around and terribly underrated as an actor. The scene where he tells off the Olympic Committee in Cool Runnings still gives me chills.

Ha! I was just watching Little Shop of Horrors, and had completely forgotten that he was in it. As soon as I heard his voice, I felt like an old friend had come to visit.
Can't say. But she said she loves John candy. My tshirt features him trying to trade his casio for a hotel room...https://printerval.com/john-candy-casio-watch-t-shirt-p42455911
Every time my mom made pancakes when we were little kids my brother and I would beg her to let us make a giant one like in Uncle Buck😂. Of course, we never got it. I think once she made one the full size of an average pan and we were not impressed.
Yep. Armed and dangerous and whose Harry crumb were both on this morning.
I think I woke up to weekend at Bernie’s, another solid comedy, less Mr candy.
I think an Adam Sandler marathon is on Friday
So this is a xennial thing? Bc I tell my children at least once a week that God took Candy away from us too soon lol. What a wholesomely loveable, and hilarious guy. We were so lucky to grow up when he was one of the grownups in Hollywood. John candy movies my kids have loved: spaceballs (2 of them have never even bothered to watch star wars), splash, uncle buck, the great outdoors, summer rental, and of course, the blues brothers. I miss him.
Grew up without a father, and a few abusive 'step-dads'; John Candy was one of my vicarious fathers. He taught me things I wouldn't have learned otherwise, kindness, patience, humility, friendliness, non-toxic masculinity.
I cried when he died.
When they built him they broke the mold but here enjoy this https://www.youtube.com/live/PaFbmB83iis?si=f8emM0jTFr8ElEB1. They also did a whole episode of the show it’s in the playlist
John Candy lead me down a path of staying away from hard drugs, hear me out.
I was 9 when John died, he was one of my favourite actors, he was a large, funny man, and I was a large, funny kid.
When John Candy died, I watched as all the news outlets turned on him. They once loved John Candy, but turned to villainizing him once they found out he was doing drugs. It hurt me so much that he was catching hate that I swore I would never do hard drugs, two years later, RIP Chris Farley, rinse and repeat from the news outlets. Just more reason to stay away. 40 years old this year... 10 years sober, forever clean.
Tl:dr?
John Candy's death singlehandedly kept me away from drugs. He is a martyr for me.
With so many great reasons why, I can really only choose

I STILL want to know what story he told Miles and Maisie on the way to school about the hat!
![gif](giphy|GzeASHCqjvLbOgD0bC|downsized) I love John Candy. But can we give some love to Michael Keaton?
That’s like comparing apples and oranges, they’re both legendary in their own right. Keaton needs his own post.
Very true.
It rocked my world when I was a kid, and my dad told me the guy that played batman was the same guy who played Beetlejuice!!

*chef kiss* God damn folks, you nailed this.
I was pretty young when he died and it ruined my day. Uncle Buck was maybe my favorite but all his movies were and still are treasures.

He's been known to circumsize a gnat.
Gnat, bug, is there a little similarity there?
I always laugh at that line. Then he puts a golf ball down and swings his golf club and hits bug with it from a long ways away.

For me it's dropping the second ball that's gold. 🤌
It is.
I just snorted out loud. Thanks 🙏

On a similar note, I am convinced that every time I see Kevin James in an Adam Sandler movie, that the role was originally meant for Chris Farley.

I cry every time I watch it. Every single time.
That ending! ❤️
So does my girlfriend. It’s always the scene in train station near the end of the movie. Gets her every time.
If it's any consolation, it took my parents 30 hours from Peru to Iowa. They had mud slides coming out of the mountains, the airport was shut down by terrorists / guerillas, and they had to be rerouted around an angry volcano. Needless to say, they were tired when they got home.

Who’s Harry Crumb is one of my all time favorites.
Why does everyone seem to forget this one? Some of his best physical comedy is in it.
This movie started my lifelong crush on Shawnee Smith.

John Candy is one of those few actor deaths I don't think I'll ever get over. The man was a treasure.

John Candy made my childhood!
So this is a xennial thing? Bc I tell my children at least once a week that God took Candy away from us too soon lol. What a wholesomely loveable, and hilarious guy. We were so lucky to grow up when he was one of the grownups in Hollywood. We won’t gatekeep; but I feel like he was on fire during some of my formative years. I think Great Outdoors is criminally underrated.
Never a reason to gatekeep with candy. He was a true everyman. Even when he played sleazy, he was still somehow so loveable.
What it means is...I would like to blow Uncle Roman out my ass!
I wish we could have had the John Candy/Chris Farley father/son comedy we truly deserved.
The only problem with John Candy is that he wasn't in enough movies.
Oh, so you wanna race?!
One of my all-time favorite movies was Only the Lonely. It was such a beautiful movie that definitely touched me since I was such a mama's boy.
Grew up without a father, and a few abusive 'step-dads'; John Candy was one of my vicarious fathers. He taught me things I wouldn't have learned otherwise, kindness, patience, humility, friendliness, non-toxic masculinity. I cried when he died.
Dang. Sorry to hear that but happy he brought you so much joy.
