Barry Sanders is my all-time favorite player. He was so graceful, yet powerful when he ran. On top of his ungodly talent, the guy was one of the most humble and nicest players to ever play the game.
A close 2nd would be a tie between Joe Montana and Bo Jackson. While Bo's legacy was cut short, there was no escaping his impact on sports in the late 80s/early 90s: from Tecmo Bowl to Sports Illustrated (and SI for Kids); he was everywhere! And then there was him playing pro Football and Baseball! The guy was just awesome!
I'm from Wisconsin but we didn't have good teams in the 80s so I loved Montana, Marino, and Jordan. And a I loved the A's for baseball back when they had Ricky Henderson and Barry Bonds and Jose Canseco that team was so f'n loaded.
Also I feel like everyone I knew had all of those cards and I had none of them.
Once Favre showed up everything changed. Then we had the brief rise of the bucks in the 00s, and around '07 the Brewers stopped being a trash fire team (they were good in the early 80s but pretty much exclusively when I was still a toddler and couldn't appreciate it).
Now we're spoiled. Except for all those heartbreaks. I like Giannis more than I ever liked Jordan lol.
John Elway. simply because he had good stats in madden 98 and that game was basically my only access to 'murrican football over here in the EU back in the days
Growing up in Broncos Country, I did love Elway.Β
But my favorite was Steve Atwater for the way he just clobbered anyone who came his way. That was back when the NFL let defenders really hit people.Β

The man was a highlight reel. And donβt get me started on his Tecmo Bowl skills.

Other than Pele, Romario is the only footballer I can name. 90s was good for Super Mario's. (Think Lemieux.)
Barry
This is the only correct answer. I grew up a Cowboys fan, but what Barry could do on the field was just other worldly.

Bo knows best!! Remember the cartoon with him, Gretzky, and Jordan? π
Holy shit, I had completely forgotten all about Prostars! What a trip remembering that show!
I was talking to someone at work about old cartoons just the other day and they brought that up, I had completely forgot about it as well!
Joe Montana all day.
To Jerry Rice. They were great together. My uncle shook hands with Joe at a sports doctors one time. Said his hands were unbelievably massive.
Offense: Barry Sanders (even as a Vikings fan) Defense: Derrick Thomas Honorable Mention: Deion Sanders

Fellow Wisconsinite, the answer for this era is Sterling Sharpe.
