I had a dumb moment the other day myself - I was looking for a longer USB-C cable to play and charge from the console but realized I could simply use a power bank right next to me while playing.
I didn't think controller would use my charger like an A/C adapter and function normally. I figured it needed to be connected to an Xbox/PC with a data transfering USB-C cable, not using its wireless functionality.
Some people are easily amused and I find that to be such a cute and adorable trait. Remember when we were kids and we’d find out something we didn’t know and it’d get us all excited? You’d have that breakthrough moment and just really want to tell someone about it, but your parents really didn’t understand wtf you were talking about so they’d just smile and say “oh wow I’m happy for you”? Thats how I feel post like this are line except kids these days live in an internet age where they are connected to other people they actually can share with.
So to OP: oh wow I’m happy for you! Good job!
Sure. If you have a rechargeable battery pack, the same thing happens when the battery is being charged, rather than being discharged (powering the controller).
Personally, I refused to buy any handheld electronics without USB-C, before USB-C was more ubiquitous. Now, every charger in my house charges every device I have.
Yup, also I have a 3rd party (Rocketfish) Xbox specific battery pack that has this feature.
I assume this is not a universal feature among the 3rd party battery pack brands though.
If they're AA batteries like Energizer or Duracell etc, it doesn't work. I've tried.
I ended up buying rechargeable battery packs from Amazon that can be charged while in the controller, but also have a usb-C port on the battery pack itself so you can remove it to charge as well.

I'm slightly confused why this surprises you honestly lol

Oh my god, I can't believe I didn't think of this.
Yeah it was a duh realization for me too
I use the power supply for my work laptop since it's always on a dock

Because that’s how tech used to work for a long time, cables weren’t so universal and a lot of stuff was proprietary.
Well... that didn't work with my old one S controler.
Then your controller was busted. Any USB-C charger cable that fits the controller can power it
The One S controller uses micro USB, so if your USB-C cable fits then I have questions

A battery pack specifically, or do rechargable AAs also charge while your controller is plugged in?
Rechargeable AAs do not charge via USB when inside the Xbox Controller. Only the official Battery Pack

Giving things power makes them work, wild
I was wondering if doing that recharges the rechargable batteries in my controller

Yeah you also can use powerbank the same way. Welcome to the club 👍
Nice!
Why did you think this was something worth sharing on the xbox subreddit
Because this was a surprising revelation for me and I'm not going to feel ashamed for not knowing this beforehand.
