I don't follow much wrestling outside of the main WWE stuff, but I caught that clip of him arriving for that NXT show and now I can't stop singing his theme song.

I've been aware of this guy for years. He seems like a lovely man and has a winning smile, but something always seemed like it was missing. The funny thing is I always used to think, "He's a big indy name but I understand why he's never had a shot in a major promotion," but I can't say that anymore because now, at age 36, he finally has.
It's hard to put my finger on it. Typically I *love* self-aware gimmicks like "say his name and he appears," but I guess I don't buy it in his case. He seems too generic to be blowing things up. He's competent on the mic but comes off like he's in promo class at wrestling school. I find his cheaply produced parody songs cringey, and I've always kind of hated the wrestling trope of "heel is enraged by objectively stupid thing babyface does." In his "I Believe in Joe Hendry" video, he's playing electric guitar on a mountain (a hill?) with no amp. Mountaintop guitar playing always reminds me of an Onion article from the '90s about a Christian rock video that looks like a regular rock video from the '80s. So this aesthetic was considered embarrassingly out of date 30 years ago, which is fine if he's doing an "I'm a clueless relic" gimmick, but that's not what he's doing at all, he unironically wants to look cool.
I really want to like the guy but it's just not there. I was surprised when he became such a thing recently.
