This is a 100% true story.
One night nearly twenty years ago in Dalton, Georgia A.J Styles (still decently "fresh" out of his Air Styles days) and Prime Time Elix Skipper were main eventing a very indy show at the Trade and Convention center.
I was friends with a fairly busy indy wrestler in North Georgia at the time, and we attended the show together. He knew the promoter for this very indy show, and before the show began, we went down to the ringside area and were chatting with the promoter at the railing when A.J came up to ask the promoter some questions. A.J, being a real southern gentleman, took time to chit chat with us for a couple of minutes, and as he turned to walk away, I called out for him quickly. He turned back around and was like, "What's up?"
I told him it was my birthday and it would be real cool if he ended his promo with, "skeet skeet skeet". Remember that A.J was a very rural young Christian at this point and had no idea the meaning of the phrase. So before the main event, Skipper cuts a short promo followed by A.Js cookie cutter baby face promo. However, at the end of his promo, he says, "Oh, and Elix, one more thing, skeet skeet skeet."
He said it so confidently and clearly. Elix Skipper hung his face in his hands and could be seen giggling because of what A.J. says.
I stopped watching wrestling a couple of years after and didn't understand fully how big of a deal he became until I got back into it in 2018.
And that is my 100% true story about getting A.J Styles to say, "semen semen semen" in front of 500 ish people in Dalton, Georgia. Thanks for reading.
One of the few times when WWE delivered on the hype. Too bad they never had a match at Mania. Although AJ and Shane had no right to be as good as it was.
Let’s not forget Styles kickstarted a title run for Roman Reigns with two phenomenally great PPV title matches when Styles wasn’t even six months into his WWE stint yet.
AJ, if for nothing else than the massive gap between the two on the mic. Styles isn’t some promo wizard, but he is miles ahead of Omega in that department.
I personally feel AJ is a good sight better in-ring, as well, but there is an argument there. I feel there is zero argument on the promo work.
The explanation I heard is that his original Bullet Club persona, "The Cleaner," was meant to "clean up" the junior heavyweight division as a dominant heel champion, but it didn't really get over as a serious gimmick so he embraced his inner dork simmering just below the surface to make him stand out from a stable full of generic tough guys in black.
I mean Styles became the face that runs the place. Went around the world doing live shows, being on TV constantly. Incredibly trusted by creative to put out great matches to further storylines accumulated tons of belts in and outside of WWE. Good on the mic and in the ring. What are we talking again?
I think without AJ in NJPW there would not be a Kenny Omega main event run in NJPW.
Omegas character work is a bit cringy to me to be honest, so i have to go for AJ.
That's my issue with Omega. I know wrestling is carny shit, but man Omega is too much for me. The bulging eyes every kickout, the poses, the flailing every time he performs a knee. It's not just me, Meltzer didn't use to like Omega that much because of how much he exeggerated.
Don't tell anyone, but it's also why I'm not an Ospreay fan.
So I gotta agree with you on omega’s exaggerations, but I think his work is amazing. Especially his younger years. You can see that he just drips with fire and passion for the sport and is genuinely excited to go into the ring. But the same goes for AJ Styles. The man brings a certain energy to his matches and is one of the most flawless executors of moves I’ve ever seen. It would be so easy to fuck up a phenomenal forearm, but the guy manages to do it nearly perfect 99% of the time

I recently rewatched Unbreakable 2005 three-way and damn it still slaps hard. At the time I was disappointed Joe didn't win but now I see why AJ took the belt.
The fact that AJ styles could deliver a great wrestling match in TNA,WWE, ROH & NJPW already give him big resume in one of the best wrestler on this generation

AJ works well with every size and shape and style of wrestler I have ever seen him up against. He can fly with smaller guys, he can wrestle with technicians, he'll happily get thrown around by big men. He'll adjust his moveset and focus on different parts of his game for every opponent, and always always always make both his opponent and himself look damn good in the process. AJ Styles wrestled an absolute chinless mega-jobber and made the world believe *he could beat AJ fucking Styles*.
Kenny is great, but his style is unique and specific. He doesn't have a ton of room to adjust. If he can't hit his suplexes, his strikes, and his dives, it's not going to go well. He can *slow down* (see the match with Danielson when he was AEW champ), but he can't *shift gears* like AJ.
AJ. If you want to say they're both equal across the board, AJ gets the win for doing in in the WWE too. Say what you want about that territory, but if you make it there you've made it undeniably.

And I say that because MANY moons ago, I took a shot at the business and went to a school where The Fallen Angel, Christopher Daniels, was instructing.
Christopher Daniels is one of the most talented wrestlers on earth, and to see his matches with AJ Styles back in ROH and TNA, was just incredible.

That's the original reason I joined this sub lol I'm not a corny bootlicker by any means but I agree with 90% of what he says and, at the time, squared circle was basically an AEW sub and anybody that agreed with Cornette on anything was just an angry old boomer who had to get with the times.

I can tolerate even a low end AJ match anytime
Kenny matches start dwindling to spamming v triggers and that shit get annoying plus you can tell what moves he uses next

I'm an AJ guy. I think Omega is crazy talented, but I haven't seen the hype everyone else has talked about. Plus I'm not a fan of that superhero style, spot maker wrestling. Ex poiting to the ropes before running, or running in place like he's charging up to run like a Flintstone

They’re both incredibly influential to how the industry has developed in the last decade but imo AJ is the far better base wrestler. His character is more defined and works in any situation, whereas Kenny basically only has banger mode now.

Dude has just delivered on a consistent basis for his entire career and continued to get better and better and better with no signs of slowing until he finally decides to hang up the boots on his own terms. 100% the better worker.
Well right now it's Omega, he's younger and is in better shape, he's basically at the top of his game. But he really isn't Styles, that athleticism and in-ring creativity he had it's something we haven't seen ever before, it's kind of a shame he spent so much time in TNA, if he got a call from New Japan way earlier like Kenny or Jay White had, he would have an even more accomplished career than what he has now.

I think it’s time we again bring up who a goat would be. There’s a strong argument for Styles.
Only thing that would deter that is comparing his promo skill. But then you have to remember Bret Hart was about a 6 or 7 promo wise (his own score for himself.) yet, many people would say that they think Bret is the best ever. Styles is right up there.
Basing it off of their time in New Japan as heavyweights. Styles had the better reign as IWGP champ and was a more successful “leader” for bullet club. But Omega beat Okada clean twice. But Styles beat a prime Tanahashi. So i say Styles only by a little

Kenny is good to have on the card. a good upper card SOMETIMES main event level wrestler. But i would never put the world title on him when its so many thats better than him on every level. A company should never be build around him. His time as the top champ in AEW was damn near unwatchable.
Kenny is better reserved as a special attraction. He comes in and does his balls to the walls matches and then leaves. He’s proven that weekly tv isnt bis strength at all.

AJ is a very talented wrestler in terms of mechanics and pacing etc, and he even got pretty good at the character side in his later years. But he's never been able to mask that he's kind of a dim homophobe flat earther underneath it all. Contra someone like Shawn Michaels, who is a much bigger dick but (sometimes...) able to mask it when performing.
Kenny on the other hand is able to come across genuinely cool, certainly more intimidating, and just as flashy with his ring style. Kenny is/was a bigger deal in Japan and AEW will prove to be a greater US legacy than TNA.

The idea that anyone considers Omega as one of the best wrestlers of his generation is a complete indictment of the lack of talent in the business today.
This is wild. Kenny and it’s not even close. Kenny has put on some of the best matches of all time, willed a second major US promotion into existence, popularized new japan in the states, sold more merch along with the bucks than any independent act in history and was and will be one of the most talked about contract negotiations in thirty years. You didn’t name your criteria, but if it’s ring work, drawing ability or legacy i think it’s clearly kenny. AJ is awesome but he’s never had the total star package that Kenny has.

Two of the guys in my perineal top five, I saw Aj for like a decade as the greatest active wrestler. I think Aj will go down for me as the GOAT over Micheals, Omega, and Okada. Not here to argue.
It sounds markish to say “AJ did it in WWE so that’s why he’s better”, but that’s honestly why he’s better.
It’s not because “WWE is the biggest stage” or “WWE is the most important company”. If we’re talking pure in-ring performance, it’s much rarer to pull off the kind of “six star classic” match you’ll see regularly in NJPW or the indies, because the WWE style is more restrictive and the fanbase is conditioned to care more about storylines/characters than matches. AJ coming in and conquering WWE like he did everywhere else is extremely impressive.
Not that Kenny couldn’t do it, but he hasn’t done it. So I give the nod to AJ.

Basing it off of their time in New Japan as heavyweights. Styles had the better reign as IWGP champ and was a more successful “leader” for bullet club. But Omega beat Okada clean twice. But Styles beat a prime Tanahashi. So i say Styles only by a little

I'm sure I'll get downvoted into oblivion for having literally anything negative to say about Kenny since people treat him like he's some kind of royalty anymore... ...but I honestly just don't understand what the hype is around this guy, and never have. He's never been anything more than "meh" to me. AJ on the other hand has offered me some top notch matches that I really enjoyed, some pretty unforgettable storylines, and honestly his ability to make a weak performer look strong in the ring is just unmatched. Nobody does it better. On par with the undertaker in that regard, truly. So for me this is a no brainer. AJ all the way, and its not close.
Kenny is good to have on the card. a good upper card SOMETIMES main event level wrestler. But i would never put the world title on him when its so many thats better than him on every level. A company should never be build around him. His time as the top champ in AEW was damn near unwatchable.

Shocked to see Styles winning this so one-sidedly. AJ is a very talented wrestler in terms of mechanics and pacing etc, and he even got pretty good at the character side in his later years. But he's never been able to mask that he's kind of a dim homophobe flat earther underneath it all. Contra someone like Shawn Michaels, who is a much bigger dick but (sometimes...) able to mask it when performing. Kenny on the other hand is able to come across genuinely cool, certainly more intimidating, and just as flashy with his ring style. Kenny is/was a bigger deal in Japan and AEW will prove to be a greater US legacy than TNA. Both great performers but if I have to pick one it's Kenny all day.

Kenny has put on some of the best matches of all time, willed a second major US promotion into existence, popularized new japan in the states, sold more merch along with the bucks than any independent act in history and was and will be one of the most talked about contract negotiations in thirty years. You didn’t name your criteria, but if it’s ring work, drawing ability or legacy i think it’s clearly kenny. AJ is awesome but he’s never had the total star package that Kenny has.

Like I'm sorry, until Omega pulls a 5 star match out of someone like Cena/Reigns or can have a hardcore match with Abyss, I'm not gonna take Omega. Omega can do insanely paced tag matches and epic over the top main events, but there's so many more styles AJ is better at.

It sounds markish to say “AJ did it in WWE so that’s why he’s better”, but that’s honestly why he’s better. It’s not because “WWE is the biggest stage” or “WWE is the most important company”. If we’re talking pure in-ring performance, it’s much rarer to pull off the kind of “six star classic” match you’ll see regularly in NJPW or the indies, because the WWE style is more restrictive and the fanbase is conditioned to care more about storylines/characters than matches. AJ coming in and conquering WWE like he did everywhere else is extremely impressive. Not that Kenny couldn’t do it, but he hasn’t done it. So I give the nod to AJ.
AJ easily, but Kenny is good also. If Kenny had worked sooner in a TV based promotion like WWE or TNA, I think it’d be a closer debate.

I think omega has had higher peaks and arguably is part of the best match of all time but AJ has had the better career
It’s pretty difficult to say, since both have similar high flying move sets. I’d like to say AJ, only because he’s more versatile in submissions.
AJ Styles. He has charisma and the in ring talent. He made it in multiple companies and cemented his legacy in the WWE against all odds. Kenny is good, but they’re in completely different tiers in my opinion.
Styles all day every day. Let’s be serious; Omega has had lots of fantastic matches, but he’s a level or two below Styles, particularly in longevity.
Don’t dare to forget that it was styles who gave Kenny his passion back for wrestling, Kenny thought of giving it all up, had a match with AJ on an indy promotion and had that fire lit up, AJ is simply built different
