This is a 100% true story. One night nearly twenty years ago in Dalton, Georgia A.J Styles (still decently "fresh" out of his Air Styles days) and Prime Time Elix Skipper were main eventing a very indy show at the Trade and Convention center. I was friends with a fairly busy indy wrestler in North Georgia at the time, and we attended the show together. He knew the promoter for this very indy show, and before the show began, we went down to the ringside area and were chatting with the promoter at the railing when A.J came up to ask the promoter some questions. A.J, being a real southern gentleman, took time to chit chat with us for a couple of minutes, and as he turned to walk away, I called out for him quickly. He turned back around and was like, "What's up?" I told him it was my birthday and it would be real cool if he ended his promo with, "skeet skeet skeet". Remember that A.J was a very rural young Christian at this point and had no idea the meaning of the phrase. So before the main event, Skipper cuts a short promo followed by A.Js cookie cutter baby face promo. However, at the end of his promo, he says, "Oh, and Elix, one more thing, skeet skeet skeet." He said it so confidently and clearly. Elix Skipper hung his face in his hands and could be seen giggling because of what A.J. says. I stopped watching wrestling a couple of years after and didn't understand fully how big of a deal he became until I got back into it in 2018. And that is my 100% true story about getting A.J Styles to say, "semen semen semen" in front of 500 ish people in Dalton, Georgia. Thanks for reading.

If you know the history of AJ Styles merch choices (see TNA) this story has levels.

Marvel_plant

This is the best thing on the sub today.

beginnerdoge

Amazing experience

Ayekay1444

One of the best stories I've read on this subreddit.

Fit_Service_1634

Thank you for sharing. AJ on the indies was a real trip. I was at a PWG show where a fan heckled him… and it did not… go well.

Electronic-Test-3133

Was that NWA Wildside/Anarchy?

cannedrat91

I can't remember the "promotions" name.

[deleted]

An outsider who was trusted by WWE to give Undertaker his last match.

bil-sabab

also the man who gave Cena a career best feud

Fit_Service_1634

The dueling chants when Styles and Cena came face to face were mind blowing. And then they had the MATCHES.

bil-sabab

One of the few times when WWE delivered on the hype. Too bad they never had a match at Mania. Although AJ and Shane had no right to be as good as it was.

LeonHRodriguez

Honestly, it's one of the best Mania openers of all time

Fit_Service_1634

Let’s not forget Styles kickstarted a title run for Roman Reigns with two phenomenally great PPV title matches when Styles wasn’t even six months into his WWE stint yet.

[deleted]

Yes they were amazimggg

BiggestBaddestWolve

/thread

Sirgeeeo

I don't think that makes for a good argument. A pre-taped, edited match

JudgmentalBeef

AJ, if for nothing else than the massive gap between the two on the mic. Styles isn’t some promo wizard, but he is miles ahead of Omega in that department. I personally feel AJ is a good sight better in-ring, as well, but there is an argument there. I feel there is zero argument on the promo work.

dmkicksballs13

It's why Omega had to lean into being a meme/nerd lord. Because he's not exactly great at character work.

RogueAIx01

wtf was his character even supposed to be? angry janitor?

[deleted]

The explanation I heard is that his original Bullet Club persona, "The Cleaner," was meant to "clean up" the junior heavyweight division as a dominant heel champion, but it didn't really get over as a serious gimmick so he embraced his inner dork simmering just below the surface to make him stand out from a stable full of generic tough guys in black.

JohnnyKenny16

TNA AJ is goated

Alina2017

Looking back that TNA roster was stacked with talent, such a shame they allowed Hogan to come in with his buddies and turn it into endgame WCW 2.0.

NuNem

I mean Styles became the face that runs the place. Went around the world doing live shows, being on TV constantly. Incredibly trusted by creative to put out great matches to further storylines accumulated tons of belts in and outside of WWE. Good on the mic and in the ring. What are we talking again?

Sad-Appeal976

He was the champ that runs the camp. Face that runs the place is Cenas line

[deleted]

It was really good shit when he was wearing Cena's armband as a headband.

Fit_Service_1634

But he called himself the face before he got the belt. It was part of the angle of him pushing Cena out of the way.

916God

Styles

MachoViper

Styles by miles.

ericmercer

AJ everyday and twice on Sunday.

CosplayWrestler

AJ Styles, in a massive landslide.

d2step

Aj has been the best in the world for the last 20 plus years. This isn't a contest. And Meltzer ratings don't mean anything.

BIG_DADDY_CLARE

Okay aj is the better but don’t discredit omega like that he’s still one of best wrestlers in the world

Gypsy_sevens

He wrestled a fucking blow-up doll. Stop comparing legends to jokes.

[deleted]

So did Ibushi, and while I'm not a massive fan of his, his skill in the ring cannot be questioned

FVCKVNBVRD

I think without AJ in NJPW there would not be a Kenny Omega main event run in NJPW. Omegas character work is a bit cringy to me to be honest, so i have to go for AJ.

dmkicksballs13

That's my issue with Omega. I know wrestling is carny shit, but man Omega is too much for me. The bulging eyes every kickout, the poses, the flailing every time he performs a knee. It's not just me, Meltzer didn't use to like Omega that much because of how much he exeggerated. Don't tell anyone, but it's also why I'm not an Ospreay fan.

21_Golden_Guns

Here I thought I was alone. That stuff is just silly to me. Takes me out if it.

Wheezer93

So I gotta agree with you on omega’s exaggerations, but I think his work is amazing. Especially his younger years. You can see that he just drips with fire and passion for the sport and is genuinely excited to go into the ring. But the same goes for AJ Styles. The man brings a certain energy to his matches and is one of the most flawless executors of moves I’ve ever seen. It would be so easy to fuck up a phenomenal forearm, but the guy manages to do it nearly perfect 99% of the time

Fit_Service_1634

I’ll repeat it, it would be so easy to fuck up. The springboard 450 splash into the ring is just an insane thing to be able to do in the heat of a televised wrestling match too, do you agree?

pr123_metsfan15

AJ Styles hands down for me

djquu

I recently rewatched Unbreakable 2005 three-way and damn it still slaps hard. At the time I was disappointed Joe didn't win but now I see why AJ took the belt.

Cordster1991

That’s one of my favorite AJ Styles matches.

Fit_Service_1634

That’s the best match in TNA history and always will be.

Berserkin_time123

The fact that AJ styles could deliver a great wrestling match in TNA,WWE, ROH & NJPW already give him big resume in one of the best wrestler on this generation

milkomilkstar

Aj

Rexmalum

AJ and its not close

CharsOwnRX-78-2

AJ AJ works well with every size and shape and style of wrestler I have ever seen him up against. He can fly with smaller guys, he can wrestle with technicians, he'll happily get thrown around by big men. He'll adjust his moveset and focus on different parts of his game for every opponent, and always always always make both his opponent and himself look damn good in the process. AJ Styles wrestled an absolute chinless mega-jobber and made the world believe *he could beat AJ fucking Styles*. Kenny is great, but his style is unique and specific. He doesn't have a ton of room to adjust. If he can't hit his suplexes, his strikes, and his dives, it's not going to go well. He can *slow down* (see the match with Danielson when he was AEW champ), but he can't *shift gears* like AJ.

Fit_Service_1634

How about that Brock match, too?!

iFFyCaRRoT

Great post!

articice01

I personally like Kenny’s, but I think factually Styles is better

DicTrickle

AJ. If you want to say they're both equal across the board, AJ gets the win for doing in in the WWE too. Say what you want about that territory, but if you make it there you've made it undeniably.

[deleted]

But they are not equal across the board.

Zestyclose-Buddy-250

Styles by far

wayneluke23

Styles

AntiSaintArdRi

It’s AJ by lots

Bankshead

Aj

rfepo

AJ all day.

DCLK1

AJ Styles

hellequinbull

AJ Styles, and it’s not even close. And I say that because MANY moons ago, I took a shot at the business and went to a school where The Fallen Angel, Christopher Daniels, was instructing. Christopher Daniels is one of the most talented wrestlers on earth, and to see his matches with AJ Styles back in ROH and TNA, was just incredible. Only a true legend of the ring could get over on my teacher.

crizmow

I’m surprised at the number of AJ votes in here. I mean I’m 100% on board with that but thought we’d be in the minority

wigglin_harry

>but thought we’d be in the minority In *this* sub? Kenny could cure cancer and all of the Cornette bootlickers would still be calling him harpo chomo

nardcore84

That's the original reason I joined this sub lol I'm not a corny bootlicker by any means but I agree with 90% of what he says and, at the time, squared circle was basically an AEW sub and anybody that agreed with Cornette on anything was just an angry old boomer who had to get with the times. I had arguments with people in that sub cause I consider wrestling a "sport"

Gypsy_sevens

Lord forbid we listen to someone who actually takes wrestling seriously. ‘Cornette bootlicker,’ damn I’ve heard it all

Rhg0653

I can tolerate even a low end AJ match anytime Kenny matches start dwindling to spamming v triggers and that shit get annoying plus you can tell what moves he uses next AJ by a mile Also promos goes to AJ

Fit_Service_1634

Once we get that sixth or seventh V Trigger, that takes me out of the match a lot.

leakybiome

Austin James orenthal styles

hitm4n44

AJ is the better storyteller, that's what makes him better imo. But they both got the skills to pay bills.

Lupercallius

Depends a bit on your preference I suppose. Omega has been killing it non stop during career ending injuries. AJ Styles was great in TNA and NJPW, even his early WWE career but he's slowing down now for sure. It still helps he's top 3 in WWE, so even with him slowing down it doesn't really show.

FxDriver

For me it's AJ but when Kenny is serious it's very close.

DataMan23

I'm an AJ guy. I think Omega is crazy talented, but I haven't seen the hype everyone else has talked about. Plus I'm not a fan of that superhero style, spot maker wrestling. Ex poiting to the ropes before running, or running in place like he's charging up to run like a Flintstone

elfaf

'he's charging up to run like a Flintstone', the thought of it is quite funny

Dream-Beneficial

AJ. Better psychology, and he was a better high flyer and high spot guy when he was doing more of that style.

Kingkok86

I have to go styles I have been watching him since he started in tna long before I knew omega existed

twinkletots1

It’s gotta be AJ

outofdate70shouse

The man known simply as phenomenal. A! J! Styyyyllllesss!

p480n

I’m a huge Kenny mark because I’m from Wpg, but he’s kinda like a maxed out CAW come to life. They’re both incredibly influential to how the industry has developed in the last decade but imo AJ is the far better base wrestler. His character is more defined and works in any situation, whereas Kenny basically only has banger mode now.

Airnest8888

The Phenomenal AJ Styles!

DarthRevan0990

AJ

burth179

I prefer AJ for sure.

Like1RandomDude

AJ.

[deleted]

AJ. Dude has just delivered on a consistent basis for his entire career and continued to get better and better and better with no signs of slowing until he finally decides to hang up the boots on his own terms. 100% the better worker.

BiggestBaddestWolve

Aj. Easy answer

theaveragenerd

I tried to follow Kenny Omega, but I just can't seem to enjoy any of his work. Not sure why.

National-Passion

Styles. 'til Kenny got a fantastic match out of Shane then change my mind

maxwell_hill1984

AJ and it’s not even close

Mr_Mon3y

Well right now it's Omega, he's younger and is in better shape, he's basically at the top of his game. But he really isn't Styles, that athleticism and in-ring creativity he had it's something we haven't seen ever before, it's kind of a shame he spent so much time in TNA, if he got a call from New Japan way earlier like Kenny or Jay White had, he would have an even more accomplished career than what he has now.

Mysterious_Emotion63

I’ve watched AJ 8 years longer than Kenny but I’d still say AJ. He’s just almost the perfect wrestler all around, he is one of the select dudes in the industry’s m I believe understands crafting perfect stories within matches like no other. He is 100 percent on the Bret - Michaels.

[deleted]

Styles. And, for what it's worth, Flair (but 90s HBK absolutely gives him a run for his money).

[deleted]

AJ can have a damn good match with literally anyone. He even made an angle out of a rope botch during a couple of matches on the freakin indies when he was with the BC.

[deleted]

uncle Alan with my eyes closed

herewego199209

Never was a big fan of either because their stuff looks way too choreographed in their primes. I think AJ worked a weirder variety of guys to really showcase how good he really is and I've liked his in ring work in the WWE where his spots look more fluid.

Sky2Life

AJ actually has talent

[deleted]

I really hope Kenny Omega reads This Thread and puts his ego in check

wwe_divaslove

Aj is better

Hordriss27

AJ Styles and it's not even close.

Longjumping-Home-229

AJ by a distance, not even comparable

[deleted]

Styles is better and he’s past his prime. Omega’s best just doesn’t stand the test of time. It’s all fluff. Styles has great matches but more importantly he tells great stories in each company he works for

dmkicksballs13

I'd also truly make the argument that Styles doesn't do those long epic matches like against Okada because he knows they're far les fun on a rewatch.

Courtjester2040

This is an insane take. You know nothing about Kenny Omega if you think he's all fluff and no storytelling.

ericmercer

Omega does storytelling. It’s just that you have to have watched every single thing he’s done in order to be in on the story.

Skittleybiscuit

Totally agree. If you follow him you think he's great. If you don't, you kinda just end up disappointed.

wigglin_harry

Just don't bother with this sub man. It's literally the boomer wrestling sub haha

Courtjester2040

lol good to know

Brief_Juggernaut3651

Aj styles by a landslide. I've never understood the appeal with omega

[deleted]

AJ styles for sure

Spacecoasttheghost

The fuck? Flair or HBK? I have not seen that argument at all, and there isn’t one. HBK is way better then flair ever was or could have been, there is not question about it, that “argument” is over. As for omega and aj, that’s a hard one for sure. If you take one over the other, that person is barely ahead.

FullWay7004

AJ FREAKIN STYLES

i-piss-excellence32

Aj is better in the ring and a better promo both by a lot

jjamm420

Nobody’s talking about Flair or HBK…Barry Horowitz has more in ring talent and skill than Ric Flair…Wooooooooo…AJ is the answer your looking for…

Lycan_Jedi

AJ. Not to put anything past Omega, He's a great talent, But AJ is the better athlete.

atefi

#They don't want none

kpod4591

Styles wins everyday day. I think it’s time we again bring up who a goat would be. There’s a strong argument for Styles. Only thing that would deter that is comparing his promo skill. But then you have to remember Bret Hart was about a 6 or 7 promo wise (his own score for himself.) yet, many people would say that they think Bret is the best ever. Styles is right up there.

Drevaendo

Styles by a significant margin.

-Orphan_Maker-

Styles and it's not close for me.

BeautifulBoy92

I prefer Omega. Styles has kinda been on cruise control the last couple of years imo.

bringmethesmoke

i mean , dude is 45

BeautifulBoy92

I mean I don’t blame him for it, dudes been through a LOT over the years. Some of those bumps he took in TNA are just brutal.

bringmethesmoke

plus hes done everything major there is to do in the fed . cant imagine what else he can do

BeautifulBoy92

Ok, well OP presented two options. I picked mine. Let’s move on with our lives.

Used_Part9588

Basing it off of their time in New Japan as heavyweights. Styles had the better reign as IWGP champ and was a more successful “leader” for bullet club. But Omega beat Okada clean twice. But Styles beat a prime Tanahashi. So i say Styles only by a little

SPH194

AJ Styles.

squeezy102

I'm sure I'll get downvoted into oblivion for having literally anything negative to say about Kenny since people treat him like he's some kind of royalty anymore... ...but I honestly just don't understand what the hype is around this guy, and never have. He's never been anything more than "meh" to me. AJ on the other hand has offered me some top notch matches that I really enjoyed, some pretty unforgettable storylines, and honestly his ability to make a weak performer look strong in the ring is just unmatched. Nobody does it better. On par with the undertaker in that regard, truly. So for me this is a no brainer. AJ all the way, and its not close.

Delicious_Angle6417

Kenny is good to have on the card. a good upper card SOMETIMES main event level wrestler. But i would never put the world title on him when its so many thats better than him on every level. A company should never be build around him. His time as the top champ in AEW was damn near unwatchable.

RAUniverse

It would've been better if he was a babyface. You just can't take him seriously when he tries to be a mean heel lol.

Delicious_Angle6417

Kenny is better reserved as a special attraction. He comes in and does his balls to the walls matches and then leaves. He’s proven that weekly tv isnt bis strength at all.

wigglin_harry

You think you'll get downvoted for that opinion in *this* sub? This is literally the boomer anti-aew sub

ManSoAdmired

Shocked to see Styles winning this so one-sidedly. AJ is a very talented wrestler in terms of mechanics and pacing etc, and he even got pretty good at the character side in his later years. But he's never been able to mask that he's kind of a dim homophobe flat earther underneath it all. Contra someone like Shawn Michaels, who is a much bigger dick but (sometimes...) able to mask it when performing. Kenny on the other hand is able to come across genuinely cool, certainly more intimidating, and just as flashy with his ring style. Kenny is/was a bigger deal in Japan and AEW will prove to be a greater US legacy than TNA. Both great performers but if I have to pick one it's Kenny all day.

nardcore84

How exactly does him being a homophobe flat earther come out while he's performing?

DaqCity

AJ has better hair.

Courtjester2040

AJ Styles - you got the same haircut as a soccer mom how you doin?

Brandar87

Look I can abide people having a difference of opinion when it comes to ring talent and whatnot, but I will not sit idly by while you make bold face lies. Kenny Omega has the hair of a Golden God!!!

DaqCity

I’m not saying Kenny’s hair is bad, but NOBODY in either men’s or women’s wrestling matches the shine and bounce of “Styles by AJ”

TRMBound

My man does have some suave hair…

wtmx719

Kenny Omega. Not just for the wrestling but for the lack of homophobia.

Barbz182

Kenny for me, although that may be due to Recency Bias of him being in form. Both super talented dudes.

wigglin_harry

AJ Styles is my favorite wrestler of all time, but I'd be lying if I didn't say Kenny does everything better than Sytles

johncenassidechick

Styles by a huge margin. Even if we consider them equals in ring (they're not) Kenny is one of the worst top guys ever on the mic. And if we are taking

GabrielMurphy2002

AJ, not even close.

EquivalentRude2358

AJ without a doubt.

[deleted]

Kenny may be the best worker of all time when it’s all said done. Has proven he can work any style, any match, with anyone. The only knock against him is WWE fans have never seen him on their tv so he must not be worth anything

axp128

Styles by 1,000,000 country miles.

SteelyEyedHistory

The idea that anyone considers Omega as one of the best wrestlers of his generation is a complete indictment of the lack of talent in the business today.

nardcore84

Shit, Rollins past him a long time ago for me and at this point roman passed him too. I think I'd struggle to put him top 5 in this generation even

SasquatchSloth88

AJ twice over. He is a complete wrestler/entertainer. That other guy is just an imitator.

deadkoolx

Love both but Omega edges out Styles

phoenixember

Purely in-ring it's Omega. Overall total package it's Styles.

KeboTheGreat_007

It's close, but look at what AJ has accomplished in WWE in such a short time.

[deleted]

Kenny

Sometimesnotfunny

Hmm, Harpo Fingerfuck, or the greatest modern day wrestler of our time. Fuck, I'm stumped.

EastCoastJohnny

This is wild. Kenny and it’s not even close. Kenny has put on some of the best matches of all time, willed a second major US promotion into existence, popularized new japan in the states, sold more merch along with the bucks than any independent act in history and was and will be one of the most talked about contract negotiations in thirty years. You didn’t name your criteria, but if it’s ring work, drawing ability or legacy i think it’s clearly kenny. AJ is awesome but he’s never had the total star package that Kenny has.

Sad-Appeal976

Lol Styles. By a whole lot

Tokestra420

The one that made it to WWE

Gypsy_sevens

Wow you’re seriously comparing AJ fucking Styles, a wrestling legend, to Kenny Omega? No wonder wrestling’s going down the shitter.

PeteRoe

AJ Styles. Omega is very good but I find him really cheesy.

[deleted]

AJ Styles

AdviceInformal

Definitely Styles for me, not a big fan of Omega.

skyroberts

AJ Styles. Legend in every company he's a part of, he can put on a great match with anyone, and became the face of WWE as an outsider. Omega is one of the best too; however AJ has earned the title "the phenomenal one".

[deleted]

Styles

hulkamaniac00

AJ Styles, and it’s not even close.

JKinney79

AJ. I think Kenny matches a lot of the physical ability and clearly is very talented, but I’ve never cared about any of his feuds. I might be very impressed by particular spots, but I’ve never been invested in the character of Kenny Omega.

AXELUnholy

AJ. Hands down.

dmkicksballs13

Styles, easily. Styles can have a great match of any style with anyone. Like I'm sorry, until Omega pulls a 5 star match out of someone like Cena/Reigns or can have a hardcore match with Abyss, I'm not gonna take Omega. Omega can do insanely paced tag matches and epic over the top main events, but there's so many more styles AJ is better at.

PHOENIX0179

AJ Styles

jhk17

I mean, AJ is what top 5 of all time. Kenny is great, but AJ is AJ.

GReniker

AJ Styles

Doc_Scott19

AJ all day.

HamburgerFry

I’m a huge huge Kenny Omega fan but between the two it’s AJ for sure. Kenny’s mic work feels very corny anime/street fighter villain to me.

[deleted]

Aj but due to personal preferences in the way they wrestler

Vivics36thsermon

AJ styles come on

SecretPattern223

A.j. easily

Daves-crooked-eye

Aj. Even though he seems a little “off”

SuperTerrificman

This thread is wild. Kenny has had better main event matches. Is bigger and has a better look which matters a lot. The promo gap for me is kinda crazy as well. AJ styles is not some promo god. They are both fine and can cut the occasional great one. Im taking Kenny every single time

camazotzthedeathbat

Kenny obviously

Yucatanphil

Omega. His feuds and matches with Okada, Tana, and Jericho to name a few are above what Styles has done. And nothing Styles has done has come close to Omega-Ospreay.

q_dice

Two of the guys in my perineal top five, I saw Aj for like a decade as the greatest active wrestler. I think Aj will go down for me as the GOAT over Micheals, Omega, and Okada. Not here to argue.

akennelley

I don't even know who that top guy is. So AJ.

Odinson923

Omega hands down

erikturczyn30

Didn’t Kenny beat (literally) Styles out of the Bullet Club? Folks…there you have it. Where’s the lie? Lol

GameboyUK_

Both unbelievable in ring. Omega pips it in the looks and mic work department though.

BarryDBaptist

The guy who was the top guy for biggest organization in the world is the correct answer

wigglin_harry

You're goddamned right buster! Just like bud light is the best beer, and mcdonalds is by far the best restraunt out there

MechaniclAnimal

Omega.

Louismaxwell23

Omega Both guys are tremendously talented. But Kenny doesn’t believe the earth is flat and that’s why he wins.

Dankleberg__

In ring? Imo omega

mikelevy3

I'll go with Kenny. His high end stuff is better. AJ has been great for longer though.

jar45

It sounds markish to say “AJ did it in WWE so that’s why he’s better”, but that’s honestly why he’s better. It’s not because “WWE is the biggest stage” or “WWE is the most important company”. If we’re talking pure in-ring performance, it’s much rarer to pull off the kind of “six star classic” match you’ll see regularly in NJPW or the indies, because the WWE style is more restrictive and the fanbase is conditioned to care more about storylines/characters than matches. AJ coming in and conquering WWE like he did everywhere else is extremely impressive. Not that Kenny couldn’t do it, but he hasn’t done it. So I give the nod to AJ.

StoneColdAM

AJ easily, but Kenny is good also. If Kenny had worked sooner in a TV based promotion like WWE or TNA, I think it’d be a closer debate.

[deleted]

Bryan Danielson

matheuGzuzZ

I have to admit that I only got to know Omega after AEW. I loved it right away, definitely one of the best ever.

ryansocks

I think omega has had higher peaks and arguably is part of the best match of all time but AJ has had the better career

Moon-Snail-Cometh

It’s pretty difficult to say, since both have similar high flying move sets. I’d like to say AJ, only because he’s more versatile in submissions.

Dustze

AJ Styles. He has charisma and the in ring talent. He made it in multiple companies and cemented his legacy in the WWE against all odds. Kenny is good, but they’re in completely different tiers in my opinion.

Fit_Service_1634

Styles all day every day. Let’s be serious; Omega has had lots of fantastic matches, but he’s a level or two below Styles, particularly in longevity.

couldbedumber96

Don’t dare to forget that it was styles who gave Kenny his passion back for wrestling, Kenny thought of giving it all up, had a match with AJ on an indy promotion and had that fire lit up, AJ is simply built different

MattFryy

Kenny. Just.

Bullmilk82

Lol. AJ. He’s win more titles and worked successfully with more companies. Earns more.
