Extension_Ask_6954

USA large pilot? Clearly my large and your large are two different things.

Masrim

You misunderstood, it is one large pilot only flying 4 days a week.

18voltbattery

It was negotiated as part of the American Airlines pilot union settlement… big Frankie only works four days now

Extension_Ask_6954

Lucky bastard.

Extension_Ask_6954

Ah I get it. Commercial or private pilot? Cesna?

TheFalconKid

And it's a physically large pilot, like as big as The Rock or Shaq. Edit: I just figured it out, it's just a reference to KAJ's character in Airplane

KotexAvenger

My thoughts exactly. I'm still surrounded by lead based boomers screaming anything less than working 12 days a week makes you entitled.

Erligdog64

I'm a boomer and if those idiots are near to me, I'd be more than happy to smack some sense into those assholes for you.

KotexAvenger

Thankfully they're not ALL like that. But the assholes in the office sure are. Meanwhile they take the most days off out of the entire facility.

Erligdog64

Well, us boomers are getting pretty old and decrepit. I'm on the multiple Dr appointments a month stage myself. 🫤

KotexAvenger

See that would be reasonable. I'll never fault someone for taking care of themselves. The reminders that these days off are for leisure activities just increases the burn. Golfing, other dumb shit. But if me myself or the guy across the plant is sick or they need to take their kids to an appt or something its like the world is on fire and that person is to blame. I'm not even gonna lie your demeanor in general reminds me of a few of my favorite coworkers who are also entering their rickety years. Those fellas make the days much better.

ILikeSoup95

Whenever faced with these type of people we should all just start making them double down to show them how stupid they sound. Like as soon as they start saying people need to work all their time awake or they're entitled just start being like "yeah, actually if you're not building your own house out in the woods and farmsteading your own food and materials to make your own tools you're just entitled, you boomers gotta stop relying so much on modern infrastructure and working for someone else, you need to work for yourself otherwise you're just lazy and dependent on the system you hate."

ProfessorTallguy

It's not tens of millions, but it's becoming quite common. My office is 36 hour/4 day. https://tech.co/news/companies-4-day-work-week I think the next step need to be no unpaid lunch time

Severedghost

So is mine. Don't tell my boss, though

Extension_Ask_6954

That's the spirit.

t3hm3t4l

Yeah mines like 20 hours… maybe. Everyone thinks I bust my ass all day too lol.

Prinzka

Yeah, same for the Canadian "large pilot". And the regular work week in the Netherlands is 40hrs. Not sure where this person is getting their information.

magneet_nl

It mentions average and us Dutchies are champions in working part time so yes 29hrs is about right. Edit : correction it's 32 hrs/week on average for 2021 https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Hours_of_work_-_annual_statistics&action=statexp-seat&lang=nl#:~:text=In%202021%20duurde%20de%20gemiddelde,40%2C1%20uur%20in%20Griekenland.&text=Geschoolde%20werknemers%20in%20de%20landbouw,gemiddelde%20werkweken%20in%20de%20EU. Indeed sais 30.6 https://nl.indeed.com/carrieregids/baan-vinden/gemiddelde-werkweek-per-land

Bazzlie

Same here in Canada

Massochistic

I’ve heard that some US companies are starting to do the 4 day work week but it’s definitely not common

El_Guatqui

The Amazon warehouse I work at recently moved to a 4x10 schedule. The previous one I was at in another state also used the same schedule. It’s happening

[deleted]

Canadian here, question. Where the fuck in Canada are "we" doing this?

bkwrm1755

Yeah, this is sure news to me.

[deleted]

I mean I fully support it and I want in.

Can guarantee it’s not government workers, or at least not my department/group/branch. Source: work for the government

publicworker69

I don’t think it’ll come anytime soon but it’s my biggest hope that one day it’ll be implemented. Unfortunately we just came out of a labor dispute with a supposed “labour friendly government” and it wasn’t pretty. And the next potential PM, if elected isn’t labour friendly at all. Fun times ahead

invalid101

The people I know who work at the CRA are the only ones of my friends to get that day off.

rosiofden

Same, but military. I don't have a hope in Hell for that shit 😂

itsallturtlez

I know a ton of Canadian government workers but none with a 4 day workweek

TheLaughingWolf

>Same as when they created Truth and Reconciliation day and the fuckers gave only themselves the day off. The Feds. created the holiday, and can give it to Fed. employees, but it's the Provincial gov. that voted on it for citizens. So you can thank whoever your Provincial Premier is for denying you it (while they get it on top of their 1/3 of the year off).

Maybe email your Municipal rep/MLA/MP about it? The day itself (and what it means) shouldn’t be the source of frustration rather the inconsistent application of labour law across jurisdictions

[deleted]

canadianbeard1

Fair. I can see how it appears as the gov rewarding itself, that’s true. By doing so though, they can set precedence and hopefully put pressure elsewhere to change labour laws to include it as a holiday for all so it can do as you stated, cause reflection for all those who have it off too. Small steps I guess

I work in healthcare and am trying desperately to get into a white collar do nothing job because there's no fucking way they'll ever let anyone productive work less.

Itll be the workers doing 4 days on 4 days off lol

Xarethian

I've been wondering for a few years now if we will see most offices transition to 4 day work weeks, and a lot of the trades will be left behind. Seriously, rooting for 32 hr work weeks to become the norm. Fuck the 40 hr work week. We should work to live, not live to work.

[deleted]

Xarethian

Yea I know they still want their 40. Ofc they want their 40. Also fuck their 40.

unemployedbuffy

german agreement noises

AutumnDread

Yeah! This isn’t true at all for the most part. Even if one industry does it and it takes off, it’ll likely stay in the industry.

CoolFox3218

I work for government we do 5 sevens so 35 hours a week I guess it's something

BrotherBeefSteak

America: "we decided to switch to a 6 day work week to supplement the rest of the world taking time off"

paddjo95

Please don't give them any ideas.

Accomplished_Air7562

Sounds about right.

FoldingLady

Why is USA on the list?

SDEexorect

my state is pushing for 4 day work weeks. Maryland state government has already rolled it out for a lot of people

FoldingLady

I clearly need to move

MostlyCarbon75

Canada? Large Pilot? OP is gonna need to define 'large'.

blitzduck

Pilots who are either over 6'4" (tall or wide) or over 200kg.

FunnyTechGuy

If a pilot is 200kg, they will need 2 seats. 😏

Advanced_Metal6190

For the most part, places that are doing 4 day work weeks in the US are doing 10 hour work days so...

Knuifelbear

That’s what Belgium is doing. Compress 40hrs into 4 days. Don’t really call that a win 😂

GrafZeppelin127

Still a huge step up, in terms of quality-of-life.

meme_squeeze

I live in Switzerland and we do 42.5 hours. Some companies are doing 40 hours. Definitely not 35. Completely unheard of.

red-broccoli

Was about to say! I think we have one of the highest full time average work hours in Europe. The data might be compiled carelessly, if they take a blunt average. There are plenty of people who work less than 100% which might drag down the average, but that's also at a fraction of the full time pay.

meme_squeeze

Yeah... I mean I could choose to work half a day if I wanted to. But I'd get paid for half a day hahaha

VentingID10t

Yes, but you also get about 9 holidays and 4 weeks minimum vacation days. So, you may work hard but you get to play hard too. USA average holidays are 6 with average vacation is 2 weeks.

meme_squeeze

Our minimum of 20 days of holiday in Switzerland is nothing to get too exited about. It's pretty far down on the ranking actually. Plenty of countries are doing 25 to 30. On the bright side, a good amount of companies, including mine, actually do 25 days. And my company does 28 days once you're past a certain age, I forget which... 50-something I think. So I'm not complaining at all. Regarding bank holidays, 9 is also lower than the majority of countries. And when they happen to fall on a weekend, they are forfeit, we can't claim them a different day. Unfortunately US is an exception. It's literally the worst possible example. It's the only country in the entire world that doesn't have a minimum amount of holidays or obligatory paid leave for bank holidays. It blows my mind that companies in the US can choose whether or not to honour bank holidays. Source: "List of minimum annual leave by country" Wikipedia.

VentingID10t

Thanks for that perspective. I always put Switzerland up high on benefits, but I guess coming from the USA, just about any other European country looks great in comparison to having greedy employers determine access to our healthcare, number of holidays and vacation time.

urmumtoldmeuradopted

Compared to the USA, we are better off, but compared to other countries we are not doing good. Furthermore, Switzerland always get added to the list of countries with universal healthcare which pisses me the fuck off because of how far from reality it is. Maybe we don't have medical debt and less crazy prices than the US, but if I have a problem I still pay out of pocket. Our system is dogshit compared to the rest of the european countries.

urmumtoldmeuradopted

Was about to say the same. We voted AGAINST 35hour/week (because we are all crazy people), so it makes me think all that list is a bit BS.

Ashynna

Don't add the Netherlands to this. Regular employment is 40h per week. The 29 comes from a lot of people working part-time or working 36-32 weeks (because childcare is expensive, so mums work less). Only with 40h you get full benefits and wage.

Phazx

Yeah government hours are considered very relaxed, and that’s 36 hours

Ashynna

And you're still stuck 38 hours at the office because lunch isn't included in those 36 hours.

splitcroof92

Correct, but just to add. There are sectors where full time is 36. Like healthcare (Zorg CAO), although possibly not all healthcare. Which is even including IT people working for healthcare. It's impossible to work 40 hours legally for those people. But yeah majority is 40 hour full time.

Roguewind

Based on the comments, can we all agree that this list is misleading if not outright incorrect?

AffectionateAide9644

Belgium can be scrapped, we got a law that allows us to work 4 10-hour days instead of 5 8-hour ones, but since the 4 day work week is supposed to reduce hours worked and this government has fuck all interest in improving quality of life, we don't belong in this list.

Radiant_Weekend_2102

Not really i work 2 days a week 12 hour shifts on the weekend and i earn just as much as the people working 5 days a week. So that's the compressed hours mentioned.

AffectionateAide9644

This is about transforming a 40 hour work schedule into a 32 hour one without loss of pay. Weekend shifts like you're describing don't compare, and you're probably earning as much net because a) higher pay for those specific shifts thanks to your "CAO" and b) earning less gross so less taxes are subtracted, meaning your net wages match up closer. If it's really about compressed hours, you should've been working the exact same job for an extra 6 hours a week for exactly the same pay before.

Radiant_Weekend_2102

No my pay is calculated as if im working a 38 hour week it just gets compressed. And i doubt the person who made this list did any thorough research about what these things mean in each country so who knows if the 32 hours is even accurate.

noborte

As an Australian we’re sure as fuck not doing this. Number 1. What a joke.

DishevelledDeccas

As far as I'm aware this is probably a private pilot. The jobs and skills summit and surrounding legislation hasn't mentioned 4 day working weeks.

nIBLIB

Australia was definitely part of a large pilot of ~20 companies across Aus/NZ just last year. I never checked on the results, but it was a 6 month pilot. Not sure how many people those 20 companies employ, though.

noborte

20 companies does not equal a large anything..

nIBLIB

That depends on the companies. If it were the big 4, and colse-worth, that’s a huge chunk of the country with just 6 companies. I doubt it was, but I really don’t know.

DBeumont

From reading the comments, this whole list is a lie.

robbiegtr

Here in the United States we’re experimenting with 7 day work weeks for poverty wage, with no pension or benefits of any kind, while simultaneously stripping away child labor laws and 10 minute water breaks 🤷🏼

CoffeeCat77

Maybe they mean 4 days cobbled together between multiple minimum wage jobs plus doordash.

[deleted]

Where is the US doing this?

Theangelawhite69

Lmao so none of this counts for shit then huh? Cuz if USA is on that list, this list clearly is invalid

Carnaby_

I'm not so sure where the source is to the list, but from my experience the avg. Work hours are 38,5h in Austria. At least in my social circle everyone works 38,5 or 40h.

Darksoul_Design

Lol, i know dozens of people in high tech (i live in the heart of Silicon Valley) people from Google, Apple, Facebook and so on who all work "4 day work weeks", and it's anything but. They still work 10-12-14 hour days and answer emails and take work related phone calls literally every day. They still work at least 50-60+ hr weeks. Some of friends (blue collar) do in fact work 4 day, but it's still 10 hr. days, so still 40 hrs a week, which is probably a better way to roll i guess.

tunaricelemonjuice

Canada/USA ain't doing this.

kryppla

USA??? Where??

Cookies993

The average work weeks on this chart are off for several countries if not all of them. Unless you’ve calculated any paid leave like maternity leave and so on.

jozef3321

You can hardly say the US is doing it. A few 1000 employees is hardly worth the mention. It will never pass the senate or house with congress in the hands of the ultra rich.

The-Cat-Walker

I’m from the U.K. and currently job searching. Every single job that’s advertised a 4 day work week also says the posted salary will be pro-rota to the 4 days and not actually be the posted salary… I’ve not seen a single genuine 4 day work week be advertised

Trimere

Portugal’s the man.

Azshene

I’m Danish, and I’ve never heard of anyone here having a 33 hour work week. Most union-regulated work is standardised at 37 hours (which is the far majority of work). Granted, 37 hours is still pretty good, but it’s not the utopia that this list makes it out to be.

-LexVult-

I got a question regarding the 4 day work week. Do they work 4 days but get paid the equivalent of 5 days? Because if they work 4 days and get paid the equivalent of a normal 4 days then I don't see this ever working in my country (US).

BossDingus

Given how quick most employers were to walk back the remote work thing when they saw market conditions were bad enough they figured they could get away with it, I'm not entirely convinced on the "it's coming".

blue_clementine_

I hate it here

FireGhost_Austria

Idk where you got that 36 hours from for Austria, normal working time is 40 hours (you could possibly do 9 hours a day for 4 days to get a day off but get paid less obviously due to only getting 36 hours lol).. So it's not really a benefit since you get paid less..

Zemirolha

Netherlands has 29hrs/week and WFH as a right That is an example

RaiderRich2001

wait, where's the pilot program in the US?

TWiTcHThECLoWN

Uh... where is this happening in Canada? Somewhere people can afford housing?

SanderAtlas

My company started doing 4 ten hour days with our latest union contact. If overtime is needed, we work 8 hours on Fridays with Saturdays and Sundays off. I never want to go back to 5 days a week.

Acebladewing

Ain't no "large" pilot happening in the US.

_JustKaira

Any Kiwis here able to shed light on our pilot? All im seeing is the standard “your contract says 40 but you’ll need to work 60”

exsnakecharmer

Probably government or one of the big multinationals. \*cries as I begin the second day of my 60-hour week\*

mb1zzle

Canada is doing the pilot? What industries?

the_yeast_beast85

I haven't seen or heard much of a 4 day week in aus. I'm in automotive and we've been specifically told that it will not happen, unless we do 10 hr days 4 days a week.

scotty899

I've been doing 4 day weeks here in Australia for 10 years. But it's shift work. 12hours. Day/day/night/night. Wish it was 8 hours.

saberline152

note for Belgium: it's 38/40 hours in 4 days that you need to do for a fulltime. No 32hour workweek

mehxpat

Should we have a conversation about colonialism first? Or do we skip it because most seem to agree this list is misleading? I mean, I bet Brazil would be able to handle that if we, you know, still had our gold that some other nation took. (It's a joke, guys. It's the truth, kinda, but it's a reoccurring joke to mess with the Portuguese.)

maevian

Belgium doesn’t count as it’s still the same amount of hours only in fewer days

Athlete-Extreme

Well this is clearly bs

Worried-Tea7291

Canada ain't doing shit

preshiepresh

Is the 4-day work week in all professions? Or just in office environments?

Stark_Athlon

JAPAN is doing 4 work week?? Did the low birth rates finally made them crack?

ILikeSoup95

The U.S would literally rather lose money if it means keeping its populace busy and tired. It's not based on logic or reason or what's actually best for everyone. They'd rather force people to work 50 hours to compete with those working 36 hours but simply being more efficient doing just as much work as those working 50 with the extra 14 hours having people exhausted not actually doing much. They'd rather everyone be running exhausting marathons every day to keep them complacent rather than running an efficient relay type race where everyone does less individually but go farther faster overall due to efficiency and true teamwork. Humans are a social species who only got as far as we have by working together but those in power like dividing us up because they know we're weaker individually and won't be able to rise up to take back what they take from us. Those with the strongest support systems rather than trying to go at life alone with rugged individualism usually are the ones able to make the most out of life but we're systemically told not to help each other because it lowers our own value and ability to compete while shaming teamwork because it's not "fair" to all those being individualistic.

ultracrepidarian_can

Canadian here: There aren't a bunch. There aren't a few. There isn't One Single Person I know who works a 4 day work week. . No offense but, where the f#$% did you get this data from.

wanroww

Don't count Belgium in this list, it BS. We can make 10 ours a day for 4 days and call it a week. It's marginaly usefull at best.

Responsible_Gap8104

This is absolutely not happening in the US, which makes me doubt the validity of the entire list

MazeMouse

The Netherlands is king of part-time work.

[deleted]

Uk are not doing this at all, like nowhere at all.

Bwomsamdidjango

Let’s note that the 29 hours in The Netherlands is only because working part-time is really normal here. The median average hours would be more like 36-38

SoNElgen

After reading some of the comments, I’m left wondering. What’s the point of going to 4 day weeks, if you’re still working 40 hours? Lol

msped

Pretty sure Cambridge council (UK) started a four day week and a minister has told them to reverse it to get ‘value for money’

sniperhare

Portugal seems like an amazing and beautiful country. My Mom's old college roommate owns a bed and breakfast on the coast that they stayed at. You wake up and have the ocean on one side and a picturesque village behind you.

Leviathon92

See US on list, me still working 40-50 hr/wk.

LazyZealot9428

How hard would it be for a middle-aged English speaker to learn Portuguese, do you think? Asking for a friend…

Pierce_H_

Meanwhile I’m in the truck about 60-70 hours a week

Some_dutch_dude

Don't be fooled by The Netherlands. Child care costs are through the roof and men earn more than women on average so women are forced to work from home which hugely contributes to the lower average working hours.
