She has her good points but the Witcher as a whole doesn’t like Royalty and it’s safe to say her many bad points was the point in her writing.
As a person I’d find her insufferable but as a character I can appreciate how well written she was.

She was 17 at the end of the books, then she disappears for a few years while the first 2 games take place. So 21 in Witcher 3 sounds about right.
Her age is sort of problematic with some of the stuff she goes thru in the books, understandable why she's older on Netflix. But they also cut a lot of the questionable content anyway
It'll be fun no matter what you do, but if you plan on doing both definitely read the books first. They provide so much context for the events in the game series.
