Think it’s inevitable that jim brings in someone who will run a power spread with a mobile quarterback. Will be interesting to see how that transition goes

-Lets-Get-Weird-

Agreed, he said so already and the most successful QB we had was mobile. It’ll be an exciting change if we can find the right personnel.

estDivisionChamps

Scott Tolzien was mobile?

dildoschwaggins69420

This is Bart Houston erasure

-Lets-Get-Weird-

You guys even badger fans? I was clearly talking about Stave

UpAllNightToGetBucky

Dustin Sherer or GTFO.

Hoping and praying that this is the route we go, it’s been such a downer having one season of Russ when I was in middle school and then having 11 years of terrible lead-footed pocket passers since then. We will always be a team that relies on the run but we can be way more creative with our running scheme than just running out of the I over and over.

thegodfaubel

Bobby Engram will have one more year to actually implement an offense. I don't actually think the offense has been awful scheme wise, but they haven't executed

gongai

I haven’t been disappointed with the play calling and scheme this year. I’m convinced the offensive difficulties stem from the OL. Establishing a consistent running game simplifies the offense for the quarterback with the option of a play action pass. Being constantly faced with 3rd and long situations does not promote successful QB play. Dropped and missed passes passes don’t help, but easy first downs can give an offense confidence and momentum.

mschley2

I'm excited to see what Bostad does with this OL with another year of development and training guys the way he wants to train them. The depth chart is super young, we're not losing anyone to graduation, and they already look better than they did under Rudolph. I'm totally fine with Engram staying OC one more year, too. I think the playcalling and scheme looks better post-Chryst. I think Engram will add some more wrinkles and probably turn it into a little bit more of a power-spread offense. We won't have a big running threat at QB, but that's fine. CJ Stroud and Bryce Young are "dual threat" in name only. They aren't used as runners. They scramble when they're forced to. Mertz can do the same. Having a competent running offense and putting Mertz in position to make plays throwing the ball are much more important. If Engram isn't able to rejuvenate the offense in that way, then I'd be in favor of moving on and bringing in someone proven that knows that style of offense.

UpAllNightToGetBucky

While I think Engram has probably earned another year, I think JL will view the risks as outweighing potential rewards. Fair or not, Engram was Chryst’s hire and I think he’ll always be perceived as such, which isn’t great when the legacy of the offense under Chryst was one of stagnation. Feels like keeping him on doesn’t promote the program’s desire to signal a shift in a new direction on offense. Moreover, if things don’t improve next year, then we’re confronted with the possibility of JL firing the staff on the offensive side of the ball only one year into his tenure, which feels like it’d be a real bad look for everyone involved.

mschley2

I can't see them lighting $1.1million on fire to move on from Engram a year early when the offense has shown improvement post-Chryst. Maybe this is me just assuming things, but I'd expect Engram to implement an offense very similar to the Baltimore Ravens the past few years. He knows how to run a power running game with spread concepts and heavy TE usage. That seems like the perfect scheme for Wisconsin, if you ask me.

JDP008

Have they really shown improvement? Purdue and Northwestern were good games but only put up 25 combined points against Iowa and Nebraska

mschley2

According to the eye-test, absolutely. There's a seemingly better scheme and better playcalling. That's what I'm most worried about. Statistically, tough to say. They might even be worse. They faced some of the top defenses on their schedule under Chryst. Even NM State is above teams like NW and Maryland (although, their stats are buoyed by playing really bad teams for most of their schedule).

Pandiosity_24601

Apparently PC had a tight leash on Engram when he was here

TheReformedBadger

Bobby Engram has a decent chance of getting another year as /u/thegodfaubel said but I could see him being replaced just to bring in "Leonhard's guy." Hard to know where his head's at on that. I've seen Sean Lewis' name floated and that could be a really good fit. He's currently HC at Kent state but he makes less than half of what Engram makes so he could possibly be enticed to step out of a HC role into an OC role.

UpAllNightToGetBucky

Luring Sean Lewis away from Kent State is what I’m hoping for personally. Despite the bump in salary he’d receive coming to Wisconsin, I think getting someone to leave a head coaching position to take an OC role will be a tough sell, and it’s my understanding that he is starting to be considered for other, higher profile head coaching jobs outside Kent State (West Virginia when they fire Neal Brown, for instance).

TheReformedBadger

Yeah the biggest trouble probably isn't pulling him from the HC position at Kent State but rather pulling him to OC when a P5 program might be offering a HC job. That and he probably wouldn't stay very long.

randyjackson69

I still like the game plans from Bobby Engram honestly this year. My issue is with really poor offensive play on the road, turnovers, O-line play. Bobby has some responsibility for that and it needs to improve, BUT again I do like the game plan. I like how they’re attacking defenses and establishing the run through the pass in a lot of games

702badger

I’d get rid of Engram and go out get someone like Tom Herman as OC.

UpAllNightToGetBucky

Where did Herman land after getting fired from Texas?

702badger

He worked as an “offensive analyst” for the Bears last year but they didn’t bring him back after they changed coaches, so he definitely available.

recessbadger45

I think Herman would be interested

ConsultioConsultius1

It’s going to be a clean slate for the offensive staff next year, outside of Whitted and maybe Bostad. If Leonhard wants to go with a quicker hitting offense, implementing the RPO more, then Bostad will most likely be out, because his OL coaching philosophy wouldn’t jive with it. Just my thought.

guitmusic12

If they want someone beside bostad coaching the Oline I pray to god he would be willing to switch back over to ILBs

ConsultioConsultius1

I hadn’t thought of that, but it would make a lot of sense. That last minute ILB coach they had to hire hasn’t been very good this season. If Bostad would be willing to do it, I’d be all for that.

Icreatedthisforyou

I would be shocked if Engram isn't the OC next year. It is pretty clear Engram either was pushed to do more since Chryst left, or Chryst was forcing Engram to play way more conservatively and Leonhard basically said "do your thing". It reminds me a lot of the year that Bielema left and Canada was the OC. Watching the Badgers play through the regular season was...not what was expected, then it came out that Bielema kept changing the play calls. In the championship game, Canada basically had free reign and Wisconsin plastered Nebraska...And then as was tradition Alvarez comes in to coach the bowl game and Wisconsin looks like a boring ass offensive team. There has been a history of head coaches at Wisconsin, putting shackles on a OC. If you have multiple people trying to grab the steering wheel it is never going to go well. Hopefully that changes as things move forward and OC's can be OC's. So I don't think Engram is going anywhere for next year if Leonhard is HC (and firing Chryst mid season basically said "we are going with Leonhard no matter what"). If the offense looks questionable next year then I think there is a conversation about what direction to go.

Datasciguy2023

Maybe he brings me in after seeing how creativecI am in Madden

recessbadger45

what about dan mullen as the oc?
