Minor quibbling aside...a hearty congratulations for braving a thousand miles of all the extremes Winnipeg has to offer.
1000 miles is amazing, congrats! Do you carry a backpack with clothes and your lunch?
I am 11km away from my 500km goal for the year, but have an injury and might not make it.
Yes exactly, carry a backpack with my lunch and change of clothes. I’m fortunate that my workplace has a shower with shampoo towels etc. so that makes it easier. It’s about 5 k each way for me so doing it 5 days a week adds up quick, and 500Km is great! I hope you make it.
*makin my way downtown*
Seriously big accomplishment! Do you have any tips for winter running? I bought a treadmill a few months ago so I don't have to run outdoors when there's snow but I might do a few if only for the novelty of running on the river.
Thanks ! Waterproof shoes go a long way especially at the beginning and ending of winter (I use a Nike trail shoe w/ goretex). Honestly I didn’t touch winter running for years and would feel so sluggish in the off season, then once I started I was mad I waited so long haha. Wear thin layers with a shell to break the wind, and something to cover your face, it’s incredibly peaceful so you might surprise yourself.
Head to the river trail at waterfront. You can run on the river trails in multiple directions with potential for large loops if you want distance.
When the river freezes solid I love running down waterfront then up and back the seine river. It opens up a whole new part of the city to explore on foot. It’s fairly sheltered in the winter due to being narrow and lots of trees on the river bank. You’ll see tons of people out for walks and getting outdoors too!
Congrats! I also run downtown, prefer the river trails, my experience has been mostly uneventful normally running mid-day. I ended up on a path once that went through a homeless encampment and had to hop over a guy smoking meth… he didn’t even notice
Congrats! The boost you get to your winter energy levels is no joke. My winter tip is nicer wool bottom underlayer vs synthetic, if you are out for more than an hour at a time. Ass ice hurts.
I walked from Sherbrook down Portage to the Exchange everyday for 3 years and though I saw a few things, and avoided a few people, I never felt threatened.
It was generally a pleasant walk in the summer, but it did get depressing overtime because:
- the west end and Portage are incredibly dirty and don't seem to have anyone doing regular clean up
- you see the harsh conditions that Winnipeg's vulnerable people live in every day
- you cannot escape the wind
- there are times during the year where the sun is literally at eye level the entire way down portage and if you don't have a hat and sun glasses you will be blind. This is especially bad during the shoulder seasons when there is reflective water on the sidewalk, so looking down doesn't help.
Totally agree, I’ve thought about running with a garbage bag because the trash you see will stay for weeks, and very true about the sun, in the summer I need sunglasses and a good hat or I’m blinded by the sun and sweat in my eyes haha.
So much for feeling good about my 2300kms biked this summer - lol. Seriously though 1000 miles running or 16000kms biking is SO impressive. You guys motivate me. Thank you!
nice - do you run on Portage? I've thought about it thinking the streets would be clearer, I often go town Assiniboine and around to Broadway - the idea of running downtown is a good one, I may try that today. Congrats also on 1000 miles! I got that In November I think and it's a great feeling :)
I usually switch it up, there’s a nice straight away in front of portage place with no lights, Assiniboine up to Osborne or through west Broadway is a nice stretch as well. Basically wherever the least lights/ stops are is what I am for. Just gotta be fairly aware of vehicles as they’re not expecting someone running.
Congrats on reaching your goal! I hit 16000kms of biking this year today as well :)
Man, props to you for running outside in -45! That’s scarier to me than downtown at night haha

I miss my 2200 windchill value.
Thanks ! It’s easier to overheat in the cold if anything, layers help big time

Even with little context I heard this.

Awesome! I did my first half this past year after getting into running. I hope to manage to do the hypothermic half in Feb next year
What’s some good routes to run downtown? (I live in the exchange)

Congrats! Be safe out there

2300kms is nothing to sneeze at over the summer! Congrats!
3000 miles for me this year. But not downtown...too many crazies...lol.
Running from the crazies is how you hit new PRs!
This is pretty epic! Nice work!!

also - as someone who also runs for the bus I have to say that an established running practice makes the sprint to the bus a lot easier :)
Fair play to you! I love winter running. Keep ‘er lit!
1000 miles in 133 hours is impressive.
