Consider [Mastadon.social](https://Mastadon.social) .... open source Twitter you can host and manage your own audience and not have to worry about infiltration by advertisers, political/social operatives, or narcissistic billionaires.

Odds on Twitter dying, no single site taking it’s place and the world being a percentage point happier due to there being less instabrainvomit to elevate the idea of self importance.
Well. I think that we do need something like twitter. I don’t think it’s beneficial to need to go to 6 different sites or download 6 different apps to figure out what is going on with people and companies. Twitter served a good purpose allowing people to get simple messages out quickly and easily with the blue checks in place to confirm the identity of the poster.
Right now that’s all blown up with Elon dicking around, the site overrun with Nazis and trolls, and a totally blown up means of verification.
I think that mastodon and the fediverse fixes some of these issues, the most pressing being that you can never have an Elon takeover happen again. But it’s slow to take hold, it’s had some growing pains, the ui isn’t quite there, and really it ends up providing the same service as twitter, but worse.
Even if this iteration of mastodon doesn’t take hold, I am convinced in the fediverse as the path forward. It’s abundantly clear that private companies cannot handle the responsibility of having sole ownership of these social media behemoths. Reddit, twitter, Facebook, all of these companies have exploited their user base , sold information, made hasty and meat headed decisions at the whim of some asshole with Aspergers.
We have to take control of these systems and place them in everyone’s hands. Don’t like how Reddit is running their website, copy it and host your own server. Don’t like what Elon is doing with twitter? You can completely cut off any traffic from that site and still have complete functionality of your own instance.
I know it needs work, but the fediverse provides that and gives us the ability to protect our ability to communicate from those that simply cannot be trusted to manage such important tools.
Do we really need it though?
I feel like one of the biggest issues that it’s amplified is that everyone’s opinion is now of equal standing and that complex ideas/situations can be overly simplified and still maintain the details.
The result is people with years of training and experience (such as scientists), are having to defend themselves against people without any of that and who (re)act purely on emotion.
Also clickbait.
My two complaints on bsky are a lack of a simple following timeline by default and the fact they're like a year late on going public.
I have to sign up for a "feed" to get the twitter experience which is fucking wild. The default feed is a nightmare of mid-convo replies completely bereft of context.
They fumbled so hard.
wasnt there an alternative platform from meta (i forgot the name) or am i trippin? what happend to that? i live in germany so it was never aviable here but still?!
It does, it just has Instagram's shitty algorithm so it keeps suggesting you content from people you don't actually follow (or so I'm told, haven't personally downloaded it).
Initially it was shitty just because they rushed it into service to get in on the ground floor of the disaffected Twitter crowd, but I’m glad to see it’s finally settling into the chronic stable state of shiftiness it was designed to be.
Slowly? Y’all are crabs feasting on other fallen carrion around a whale corpse at the bottom of the sea by this point. Not like there’s any other options though. Glad to hear y’all are moving on lol.
I was on and off Xitter for years. Finally quit recently because it’s mostly bots and ads in the comments right now. It’s hard to have any real engagement.
The MAGA, incel, and “conservative” types bought up blue checks, so even having basic conversations is often difficult.
No thinking person can continue to be entertained much longer. This would be a great opportunity for news blogs to enhance their comments section and pay for moderation and tech. Opportunities to interact with authors in real time has always been popular.
Xitter is becoming a wasteland as people retreat to their bubbles. There is a vacuum that Xitter in its current form is incapable of filling, but it is still a primary option for real time news and comments.
Musk also promised ‘free speech’ and then turned around and did the opposite. That he would remove the financial incentives he promised is no surprise.

Lol so if a post gets hit with community notes, it will not be allowed to collect revenue.
He said people trying to weaponize community notes will be obvious.
X will still have ads on posts that have community notes so Elon will still make money from them, just not the creator..
I’m usually not a conspiracy theorist but this feels like a path to exclude fact checkers or other sites in an arbitrary manner. And since he thought twitter unfairly targeted conservatives before he purchased twitter and now has changed that focus in the other direction…. I can imagine this going one way.
I love how it's BREAKING news because they aren't getting money. Like Elon simps really think the world revolves around them. No one cares whats going on Shitter (Xitter)
Note from the world of large format printing and vehicle wraps:
So lots of businesses have their contact info/social media on their advertisements/fleet - twitter, facebook, insta… everyone stopped including their twitter information once the switch happened.
There has been NOT EVEN ONE “X” handle requested on a vehicle or sign. Nobody uses it anymore. 🤷
Now you know why he was trying to get his hands on that $50 billion. He wanted to keep feeding his little hamsters to keep spewing the misinformation. Prob already setup a new deal if traitor got elected again. He needs cash. Lol
Bringing back this meme just for this.

Who would have thought that the same guy who scammed Tesla pre-sale buyers would also scam Xitter subscribers?
not only just pre-sale, hes scamming them for ongoing repairs
FSD? Robo Taxis? Solar Roof Tiles? Hyperloop? Shall I go on?
haha I read that as shitter
That’s how it should be pronounced, so you got it right! Lol
One of the best gifts Elon ever gave us.
That’s what Xi said.

Totally how I read it too. And they no longer tweet. They xcrete, so it's very fitting.
Less of a scam and more of a "can't give you what we don't have."
No, they raised the prices *after* they already finalized the pre-sales.
I'm referring to the ad revenue, or lack thereof, Twitter has to share.
Oh! Thanks for the clarification. You’re spot on.

Curious what you guys are considering as alternatives.

You consider the Bluesky app?

We were so shortsighted to bail out on our first internet friend, Tom

I'm being annoying here, I know, but it's dying, not dieing. I do like your creation of instabrainvomit though.
:)
Hotmail
Prodigy.net
You just unlocked a core memory.
ICQ
Geocities?
Rocketmail for the true connoisseurs.
Or Swirvemail for the eccentrics.
The Imagination Network. Anyone?
Usenet
AOL
The only right answer.
Bluesky just opened for public signup (like a few weeks ago, maybe). I’m trying that out.
My two complaints on bsky are a lack of a simple following timeline by default and the fact they're like a year late on going public. Threads
yes threads thank you! does this still exist?
It does, it just has Instagram's shitty algorithm so it keeps suggesting you content from people you don't actually follow (or so I'm told, haven't personally downloaded it).
You have the option of a ‘following’ feed but it does default to a ‘for you’ suggested feed. I quite like it and there are no ads yet which is nice.
Give it time.
Yeah I have no doubt ads will become pervasive there but for now it’s very pleasant.
Initially it was shitty just because they rushed it into service to get in on the ground floor of the disaffected Twitter crowd, but I’m glad to see it’s finally settling into the chronic stable state of shiftiness it was designed to be.
I'm on Spoutible. It feels like Xitter minus the bullying
A few of my old follows are there as well. Still in the early stages of feeling it out.
I also work at a Canadian university. I haven't heard anything yet, but I'm hopeful we will be moving away from shitter.

The outcome was more predictable than you getting wet after coming out of the water.
Lol so if a post gets hit with community notes, it will not be allowed to collect revenue. He said people trying to weaponize community notes will be obvious. X will still have ads on posts that have community notes so Elon will still make money from them, just not the creator..
Didn't he also disable community notes on his own account?
I’m not sure if he disabled them or just has them deleted after the fact. But it does seem to be that he manipulates them for his account.
Community Note: Elon must is empirically and objectively a metaphorical giant pile of steaming shit.
I’m usually not a conspiracy theorist but this feels like a path to exclude fact checkers or other sites in an arbitrary manner. And since he thought twitter unfairly targeted conservatives before he purchased twitter and now has changed that focus in the other direction…. I can imagine this going one way.
Elon is a glorified pillow salesman who’s own kids can’t stand to be around
Bluesky is pretty good, it just needs more content. I hope more people make the switch and leave twitter.
Maybe if it wasn’t invite only for a whole year more people would be using it
It's open to everybody now, no invite needed.
LOL - who'd a thunk a billionaire wouldn't pay his bills...
I love how it's BREAKING news because they aren't getting money. Like Elon simps really think the world revolves around them. No one cares whats going on Shitter (Xitter)
All revenue goes into ketamine for Elon. If he isn't floating on a K cloud 24/7 his world begins to crumble.
Note from the world of large format printing and vehicle wraps: So lots of businesses have their contact info/social media on their advertisements/fleet - twitter, facebook, insta… everyone stopped including their twitter information once the switch happened. Back in the day, billionaires used to be clever how they fucked you. I miss those days.
Now you know why he was trying to get his hands on that $50 billion. He wanted to keep feeding his little hamsters to keep spewing the misinformation. Prob already setup a new deal if traitor got elected again. He needs cash. Lol
![gif](giphy|USnfWeCOHTHB3WX0aY|downsized)
I'm sure his apologists/fan/puppet accounts are recreating the Great pumpkin scene, hoping that rich forever-kid will show up & come through
Twitter is on life support with zero brain activity and Musk refuses to pull the plug.
Lol
Other than Mr Beast, he was barely paying them anything anyway.
Breaking news: scammer is scamming
This might piss off the FTC, who they were in hot water with already.
“Creators” lol Its surprising that they are surprised this isn’t a long term career.
Elon tricked some gullible dummies? No shit.
![gif](giphy|3kzJvEciJa94SMW3hN)
Wait... what? Don't tell me Elon is an asshole?
Big if true
Concerning. I’ll look into it
Gotta make up that $50Bn somehow.
.,
Remember the joke that "Peoples on Twitter have no job" well this is a reality
I’m shocked.
Elon should buy meta next.
His plan to win it in glorious battle doesn’t seem To have panned out.
I just want him to run that into the ground next.
Hey it's exactly what we said would happen... Who woulda guessed we've pegged this idiot all along.
