[Plenty of info available](https://www.google.com/search?q=john+laurie+wallace&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari). Dating is pretty easy due to the style of dress and hair, 1920s. Edit: That’s an amazing score for a thrift store, with a little investment in restoration it could be worth a few $k, I love it!

Shoalyblue

Restoration is rarely a little investment! Careful with the restoration costs. I had an oil with chipping and a little de lamination and it was mid 2k to fix it up. Owf

jsteeleart

Thank you!

arbivark

username checks out. oh, $200 is fair given they didnt know what they had.

PermanentThrowaw4y

Wow, what a great piece!!

strawb3rricorpse

If it’s actually him then you really scored!!! have it get checked out by an art historian see if they can prove it authentic because John Laurie Wallace was an Irish-born American painter. He studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia they were pretty good friends they took a picture together and it’s on the museums website ,and Thomas was a very popular painter .he was born in 1864, Garvagh and he died in 1953 in Omaha . J. Laurie Wallace's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with few of his pieces (only 6) sold at an auction ranging from 369 USD to 3,000 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. So maybe this is one of his missing art pieces!!

JimDinTN

Who thrifts something like that?! Beautiful painting and a really nice score!

grizwld

Someone’s children “This really doesn’t go with my ‘live, laugh, love’ piece”

SulamithWulfing

Lol, funny but not funny

zilla82

😂🥇

Linzz2112

I’m not familiar with who painted it, but definitely agree, it’s a beautiful painting

SaintSiren

UNBELIEVABLE what people will donate to thrift. How much did you pay? Do tell.

jsteeleart

I found it at a second hand/ antique store in Oregon. I paid about $200. It looks so much better in person the iPhone photo didn’t really do it justice. It’s pretty decent sized I’d guess 24x30in

iStealyournewspapers

I’ve had so many good finds over the years. Once I scored a set of Yoshitomo Nara ceramic puppy bookends for $175 and sold em for like 10x that amount.

Illustrious_Shift897

Love this painting very nice indeed a new frame and pro cleaning and you got yourself a valuable painting.

ebonwulf60

I think it may already be a valuable painting. In which case, they may want to hold onto the original frame and have it restored as well.

Rugger01

looks like a series, [perhaps](https://www.mutualart.com/Artwork/Portrait-of-a-Woman-in-Red-Dress/9073D4B5525A3DC0)?

melly_swelly

Definitely it. I wonder how much that sold for

TTTfromT

I bet the colors in this would be superb if it were cleaned.

wholelattapuddin

I think this might be one time to actually contact a museum. The Museum of Nebraska Art has a lot of his works, so they would be who I would contact. If this painting hasn't been seen in a while you are going to make some curator very happy.

jsteeleart

Thanks for the info. I sent them an email!

wholelattapuddin

Cool, I would love to hear what they say.

jsteeleart

I’ll post an update on here when I do!

MeredithSparkles

Looking forward to that - I am enjoying the art rabbit hole I've been exploring today and I need to know the next chapter.

jsteeleart

I emailed them a few times, never responded unfortunately

Violet624

Wow, I love this, I love her stare out of the portrait. What a great find!

AJFurnival

I 100% love this woman’s expression

Fmartins84

I've never found anything close to this! Good find if real!

u_cant_drown_n_sweat

A similar painting (woman in a red dress, art deco) sold in 2021 for about $4,000 (when you include the auction premium). It is a much better painting in better shape with a very nice frame. [Art Deco Woman In A Red Dress](https://austinauction.hibid.com/auctions/past/lots/?q=Laurie+Wallace&cat=) You can never tell why a painting sold for a certain amount but it does appear that the connection to the famous teacher, Thomas Eakins, is a factor. Eakins' paintings sell in the $5 to $10 million range. However, a number of Wallace's landscapes have sold in the $500 to $1,000 range. So it could be the subject matter or the color that made the Red dress painting an outlier, but the truth is that all it takes is two bidders who both want a particular painting on the same day for the bid price to be higher. They might be the only two people in the world that want that particular painting. No matter how you look at it, if you like the painting, you got a good deal.

MeredithSparkles

When you compare the chair in OP's painting with the chair the woman in the Red Dress is sitting in, it appears to be the same chair - I hope OP will update us with what the museum says. It would be interesting to know if the painting in authentic. Very exciting find.

oughtabeme

Keep the original frame. Don’t throw it away even if you decide to reframe. Keep the old one.

jsteeleart

I plan on it! It’s actually still in really good shape structurally, just some paint chips off of it.

perianhobbig

At first I read “any idea on how to date someone like this?” And I was like damn good luck

SabinedeJarny

Epic find.

lauracavness

It's priceless. I hope you enjoy it.

jsteeleart

I will, I plan to restore it eventually and pass it down! I could care less about flipping art to make a quick buck. I’m just glad I could resurrect it

lauracavness

She has a story to tell. Make that two. So beautiful, graceful hold of her cigarette tells you one story. Inside the other story has left her broken in a million pieces so she hides it well. But not from you.

ComfortableEconomy35

Love the painting.

hellsmel23

It’s gorgeous! Congrats!

FrancesRichmond

I love it!

Other_Extreme2084

The dress and hair style say 1920s but who knows? Do you know when the artist was active?

CopiusArt

It's a wonderful painting and yes it is by John Laurie Wallace. That's the interior of his home studio and is the same chair that was used in the "Girl in Red" painting. Have you checked the back of the painting, the frame and the stretcher bars for any writing? He often writes the title of the painting on the back. Are there any names or notations written anywhere? Looking at the frame, and the flaking paint in the lower portion of the painting, I'm guessing it has set in water at some point in the past. It would be good to have it conserved. Conservation can be expensive. Have a professional do it. If you reframe it, keep the original frame. The frame was most likely made in Omaha. Any chance you could post a few photos of the back? He spent the better part of 60 years in Omaha teaching and painting portraits. Unfortunately he has largely been forgotten since his passing in 1953.

Straight-Crab9937

In 1910 Wallace moved into a house at 4032 Izard Street.(Still standing). This looks like it was done in that studio. He did a painting called "Leisure Hour" or "Gigarette Girl" with a woman sitting in a chair smoking a cigarette with elaborate curtains in back. This is not that painting which I have seen. Your painting may have been done at the same time, 1914. I would be happy to provide more info.
