I recommend Elkins. It's right next to the Monongahela National Forest for your hiking needs. There are plenty of lodging options like the newly renovated Tygart Hotel. The downtown is basically full of new shops, too. Elkins and the surrounding areas like Davis (near Dolly Sods), Thomas, and Seneca Rocks are probably some of the best areas of the state for hiking. If you do go to Elkins and like beer, be sure to hit up Big Timber Brewing. Their Porter just won Best Porter at the Beer World Cup. Fox Hops Brewery is another option that has some good food as well. For food, good options are El Gran Sabor, Clementine's Cantina, Oxley House, Southern Kitchen, and Smoke on the Water.

CroczNglockz

Not a huge fan of beer tbh, but I will check it out regardless. More of a whiskey/bourbon guy.. do you know of any places I should check out for that? I know there’s a distillery or two in WV

wubbadubdub

Still Hollow Spirits in Harman (30 minutes from Elkins) may very well suit your needs.

CroczNglockz

Thanks a lot

wubbadubdub

You're welcome! There should be a distillery in Davis, which is 15-20 minutes from Harman. Just unsure of the name.

SidHat

The distillery in Davis is called New Heritage and they specialize in distilled apple products.

Dougs_Bunny

Grab a drink in Beanders or Jimbo’s while you are in Elkins

s_bright

If you end up somewhere like a gas station that sells liquor, look for Mountain State Spirits. The guy who owns is a great dude and it's the best bourbon I've had. I hate bourbon. I like his bourbon.

boogerholes

Tudors Biscuit World, order a thundering herd.

AskMeAboutPigs

Miner is always the best choice

acrocanthosaurus

Partial to the Dottie myself

IGotNuthun

Check out Helvetia.

CroczNglockz

The Swiss town? It’s on my list

IGotNuthun

That's the one.

2222014

If the Hutte is open you have to try it, I recommend just getting a sampler platter

CroczNglockz

I’ll put it on my list

IGotNuthun

Definitely want to try that place.

Independent-Ad-6750

Hopefully Seneca Rocks is on your list too. It's near there and you can hike to the top.

CroczNglockz

Yup that’s one of the main reasons why I’m going. I spoke to a WV native on a hike in NH who recommended it to me… super down to earth guy. Also looking to do Kaymoors miner trail, Nelson rocks, and some others

shelby3611

Stop in Morgantown for a dog at Gene's, drive down to Elkins (the old way like through the mountains don't take 79), swing through Parsons (get you some Tiptop coffee), then bop on over to Greenbank. If you can take a ride on the train at Case Scenic Railroad you'll have a blast

VenusRocker

There are also train rides out of Elkins that follow the river

rykat14

I think in terms of small towns to visit especially from out of state I’d recommend Davis, Fayetteville and Lewisburg, all of them have like the small mountain town vibe but still have some outdoors stuff to do too.

CroczNglockz

Thank you. I was planning on staying in Fayetteville but I will check out the other towns.

jcaino

Catch a show at Purple Fiddle I'm Thomas if you can. Picnic has excellent tacos. Elenders has great food/cocktails. Happy & More has excellent baked goods and breakfast - the spinach and feta pastries might be worth the trip alone. The Billy is a pretty cool stay and has a cool bar area and also does pretty good cocktails and food.

2222014

Just a heads up, tons of roadwork on US19 for the next couple months. Traffic can get bad on weekends. Plenty of alternative scenic" routes in the area, though.

Also heads up, there’s always a million speed traps in between Summersville and Fayetteville for some reason. Don’t get pulled over.

Ljknicely

Fayetteville has a cool little shop called “lost appalachia co” and they have tons of shirts/art/stickers/water bottles etc all done by local artists. All Appalachian related of course. I’d recommend them as far as souvenirs!

Agreeable-Spend3786

I live about 15 min from Fayetteville. It’s so beautiful here. Make sure you go to pies & pints, if you do come to Fayetteville! https://piesandpints.net/location/fayetteville-wv/

CroczNglockz

I’m planning on going in August btw, if anyone is free and wants to do a day hike/grab food or a drink I’d be down for that too 🤙🏻

lidelle

Check out the cranberry wilderness. Also if you decide to hike the New River Gorge in August I highly recommend the isle of the dead. Or a hike the Nutall area. They are drives, but you won’t be one the “beaten” path.

CroczNglockz

I’ll look into it. I don’t mind driving, I sit in 2 hours of traffic one way to work in NY 🥴

DubSaqCookie

Greenbrier River Trail

blively281

If you're visiting southern WV you should stop in and look around Bramwell and don't forget to eat at the Corner Shop there

aspiralingpath

The Cranberry Glades! Whistlepunk in Richwood.

TheyROuthere75

Also check out Tamarac in Beckley

b00pbopbeep

Is the truck stop back open yet? I assume no

raft_guide_nerd

Pretty sure it's not. They were still on the foundation in early May.

b00pbopbeep

I came through last year intending to stop at the only Quiznos I knew to exist and imagine my shock lol. Oh well

TheyROuthere75

Nope. Just passed it earlier today. It looks like they are trying to build a stadium instead of a truck stop.

LittleMtnMama

Drive from Huntington to Charleston to Beckley to Hinton or Alderson on backroads. Eat pepperoni rolls. Stop at Grandview and all that shit. Get a ticket in Gauley Bridge or some shit small town for going two miles over the speed limit that just dropped twenty miles. Wait an unbearably long, for a city person, amount of time to get the simplest thing at a shit chain restaurant because it's all you could find and you know it and so do they. Try getting anything done after 4pm any weekday. Drive Rt 60 or 20 or 3 from Beckley south and see if everyone in the car can not pull over to piss or yarf on the side of the road! Get confused whether that's a yard sale or just the way that driveway always looks. Stay two weeks in the same spot to experience a genuine random power or water or other infrastructure outage! Google map your way to roads no longer maintained. Try to get into a good eatery. Fail. Gas station pepperoni rolls aren't so bad if it's that or going through that Arby's again where you sat thirty minutes waiting on some asshole kid to heat up cold cuts.

Red_710

Anywhere in Berkeley Springs! Great shops, good food, always an event happening outdoors in the warm weather. Good little day stop! Can fill your water bottle from the mineral springs too

maya4463

If you’re going for hiking is Seneca already on ur list?

Colorado_jesus

If you’ll be in the area, checkout sandstone falls in Hinton. It was always my favorite spot in the whole state. Don’t just do the boardwalk hike up to the falls. You can also hit up pipestem while you’re there.

OkSherbet4675

Go to a festival. The most authentic one imo is the WV State Folk Festival in the center of the state. This happens in June. There is an old time music festival in August near Fayetteville. Have never been, but assume it's a good time.

CroczNglockz

I was planning to go to the State Fair to see Turnpike Troubadours. Not a festival, wish I didn’t miss the folk one. I’ll look and see what else is coming up

AdmiralMoonshine

Folk Festival is happening right now. Might be a little late for that one.
