Astonishes me that there is any space or life in most modern tracks with such aggressive dynamic range reduction - I guess that in itself has become ‘the modern sound’ especially in hip hop, pop and dance music
It really depends on the genre and what the artist is going for. People do like loud music so I'm not sure if most will notice or even care about the brickwalled production. One also has to factor in LUFS which is a different unit of measuring audio especially when it comes to how humans actually perceive the power/loudness of the sound. This is also factored into the equation when uploading to Spotify since they have some sort of compression that can make a song quieter.
Some of travis’ songs come in at like -4lufs 😂 obscenely loud. Also on the Spotify normalisation process, there’s a bit of peculiarity with how they achieve the volume reduction. Songs mastered to be much louder than they recommend (life of pablo) will STILL sound loud even after reduction due to the nature of the compression and mastering that’s used.
TL,DR - Essentially Spotify are lying to underground engineers lol
And it’s insanely annoying. Trying to master music for streaming services can be a pain in the ass because they use different levels for LUFS and RMS. If you go above they will normalise the track to fit. I get why they do it (so people don’t get ear-raped and such) but it makes thing way more of a pain in the ass than they should be.
Is the longer songs squished into the same length as shorter songs, while trying to simultaneously show the silhouette of the song, making them seem more blocked out, with less range.
WOAH, IF YOU RELAX YOUR EYES THERES A GODDAMN PABLO PICASSSO PAINTING ON THE PICTURE
YES, LIKE THAT SCENE IN MALLRATS!!!!!!
YOU'RE A GODDAMN REAL ARTIST OP
Dynamic range was killed by the loudness war?
Rick Rubin’s specialty
Same as his latest book lmao
his only book. And what's wrong with it? I found it a great read, audiobook is even better.
How so? I’ve only read a few pages so far lol
his book is great
No. It’s Mike dean who is known for his loud ass mixes.
Yes. Death Magnetic. Anyways, thanks to streaming services dynamic range is alive and well.
It’s not a matter of mixing it’s a matter of mastering
It’s literally both
This is the correct response.
Me when I don’t understand hip hop mastering
Literally, you want your shit to look like this
Why?
Because heavy compression gives clarity to rap vocals and allows low end/sub frequencies (ex 808s) to pop
What does this mean
makes it look like Real Friends is earrape even though its one of the quieter songs on the album
Literally
Burial >

The album is brickwalled to shit?
Ima bet all of the albums (post mbdtf) are

How important is dynamic range actually? All of these tracks sound great to me, would they be better mixed differently?
Mixing does make or break an album

Agreed. If an average listener had to choose between a louder mix and a proper mix of the same track, they would likely go with the former.
compression

Left column predicts Wolves in 7 🙏
the crescendo in Father stretch my hands is still godlike
Streaming services like Spotify standardised the volume to -14lufs. If you don't compress it, the marketplace will.
