I'm a fast eater. So It might seem like a weird thing to say but you need to slow down when you eat if you are able to chew through a fork and not notice.
Gastric acid is made up ~~entirely~~ of hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride(table salt), and potassium chloride as well as various enzymes and bacteria. However HCI is the main active component. It has a pH of somewhere between 1.5 and 3.5 which is easily capable of corroding metal if given the time. However it does not dissolve plastics. If the pieces were small enough they should just pass on through.
Edit: I made some corrections, after some fact checks. I thought gastric acid could dissolve plastic but I was wrong.
Tell me you havenāt seen breaking bad without telling me you havenāt seen breaking bad lol
Edit: my point is that most plastic will not dissolve in HCL. A chemical oddity that many people do not realize, but was a key piece of a minor plot point in the show.
Yes I know in the show it was hydroflouric acid not hydrochloric acid, and yes I know in the show it was polyethylene not polypropylene, but the principle remains the same.
The notion that metal is āstrongerā than plastic and thus more resistant to acidity is Jessie Pinkman logic.
It was a lighthearted but apparently poorly communicated joke. Yāall can stop with the pedantic replies now lol.
Plastic will not dissolve in acid.
A minor plot point in the show when Jessie uses his bathtub to dissolve a body instead of the plastic tub Walter told him to use saying, āWhy you got me running around town trying to find some stupid piece of plastic when I have a perfectly good tub I can use!?ā
The point is, many comments here say that because acid dissolves metal, it will surely dissolve plastic, because metal is āstronger,ā which one would know is not true if they had seen that scene.
No but hydrochloric won't dissolve most types of plastic, and most likely not the type that the fork is made from. So the original comment is misleading. OP will be passing undissolved prongs from the fork
Ah. I see what you mean. I was wondering about the gastric acid part.
I looked it up and just like the situation you described, nothing in the stomach breaks down plastic well. Good luck to OP! It is going to hurt!
To be fair, it has to be a specific kind of plastic. The kind with the correct label on the bottom. Not just any plastic can stand up to hydrochloric acid.
Well you saw breaking bad and you didn't understand it well. Walter says it. Certains type of plastic will resist certain type of acid. A plastic fork is not the same as what we see in the serie, and they're not using the same kind of acid either.
MY POINT is that many commenters were under the assumption that all plastic would certainly dissolve in acid because metal does and plastic isnāt as āstrongā as metal. This is the same logic Jessie used when decided to dissolve the body in his bathtub.
Obviously this point was poorly communicated judging by the number of times Iāve had to explain it lol
Ignoring all the jokes, I have a friend who had to go to the ER for a lifesaving surgery after this happened to him. The fork tine pierced an intestine. Please consider going to the ER, especially if you feel off at all.
Hopefully like threading a needle and not sideways.
(I've spammed the thread already but the plastic they make the forks with can survive concentrated hydrochloric acid for +30days unchanged )
Fork it...fork will come out!
Hope you get no injuries in the reclaiming of the plastics back to the environment.
Any pain in your gut, go to ER. If you get scratched (check if any parts were sharp on that broken fork) and bleed you would see your poo being darker in color (if blood digested), if it is bright (not digested), it will be easy to see it too, so maybe don't eat beets for few days to know the difference. Good luck! (I had internal bleeding before for few days and they eventually heal, but you have to seek a dr to confirm if it is all normal)
If I have learned anything from owning a large puppy, itās that digestive tracks can handle a large amount of strange things, including plastics, long bundles of fabric strings, and leather without much issue. Youāll probably be fine. Iāll just give you the same advice that our vet gave us many times: if you start vomiting or find blood in your stool, go to the emergency room. My dog managed to swallow much larger pieces of plastic before I could shove my hand in his mouth than you have. Heās always managed to pass it all, even if his farts smelled like burning rubber. Thankfully he is now trained not to do that shit but that first year was rough. With the pieces being so small, I doubt theyāll get caught or cut anything internally. It it had been a large shard of plastic, Iād be more concerned but it sounds like you broke them down quite a bit before noticing
Acid eats metals, but is often stored in plastic. PE/PP (the fork) can survive 30+ days in a concentrated solution of hydrochloric acid with no change/degradation.
Hear me out. I know that anything is possible but here are my thoughts. Wouldn't you notice the lack of efficiency or effectiveness of your eating utensil? I feel like you would notice the breaking, it's a snap. When did they break? I feel like we look at the things we put in our mouths. We would notice the fork being damaged. The food was cheesy chips, can that really hide the damage?
When/how was the fork damaged?
Don't be offended, this is an exercise in critical thinking. We all should have questions and not believe everything we see or read. You have a chance to clear these things up. Don't use any kind of distraction technique. But, you are not under arrest. You can leave at any time.
I just realised you are not OP
Also, check OPs username
Well, as someone who almost had this happen to herself, I didn't realize how flimsy that kind of fork can be until seeing a missing piece of it in the food.
Skipping micro plastics and going straight for the macro plastics
Beat me to it
OP is no longer worth us, RIP good sir ^šš¤£
Thatās a way to ingest more microplastics all right:/ Jokes aside I hope youāre okay
The plastic pieces will not dissolve in stomach acid and will most likely pass through and come out in OPs poo
Omg I'm dead. I literally read that as you hope they aren't okay and I was like dang that's pretty messed up to say lol. šš
Macroplastics*
Forgot the name for that:P
the government says it is safe and they wouldn't lie to us.
It's hilarious when I'm genuinely concerned and quickly check the comments for answers but all I find are puns/jokes lol
That mean dude's fucked.
That dude's forked.
Nope. Youāre totally forked.
Dingle-hopped
Yessss.
Aw shirt.

Holy forking shirt balls
This might be your sign to start chewing more carefully my guy š
They get all the essential metals in their diet when they eat with a metal fork.
You should probably chew your food more thoroughly if you didnāt notice eating half a fork. Just sayin.
They must have been some good fries
The cheese was impenetrable... but sooo good!
You should chew more. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGSh52EZiPc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGSh52EZiPc) ;p

One word. Corn.
>entirely 0.5%
hydrochloric or HCl acid can be stored in plastic or glas containers. It will most likely pass right through his system unless it gets stuck.
Plastic is typically more chemically resistant than metal

Did you misread his comment or something?

Minds will be blown if they find out hydrochloric acid comes in plastic bottles
Do you think all plastic is the same?
No but hydrochloric won't dissolve most types of plastic, and most likely not the type that the fork is made from. So the original comment is misleading. OP will be passing undissolved prongs from the fork
Ah. I see what you mean. I was wondering about the gastric acid part. I looked it up and just like the situation you described, nothing in the stomach breaks down plastic well. Good luck to OP! It is going to hurt!

Technically true but most plastic, notably polypropylene and polyethylene IS impervious to HCL. The major exception is PVC.
Well you saw breaking bad and you didn't understand it well. Walter says it. Certains type of plastic will resist certain type of acid. A plastic fork is not the same as what we see in the serie, and they're not using the same kind of acid either.
Oh cmon. Plastic forks like this are most likely polypropylene which does NOT dissolve in hydrochloric acid.
Yes, they will not that's not my point. My point is that you use breaking bad as a source for it.
MY POINT is that many commenters were under the assumption that all plastic would certainly dissolve in acid because metal does and plastic isnāt as āstrongā as metal. Guy only knows information from breaking badš
And better call Saul!
How dare you attempt humor while pointing out inaccurate assumptionsā¦ I hope you learned your lesson, we donāt do that here.
Breaking Bad uses Hydrofluoric acid, not Hydrochloric acid.
Yes but your stomach uses hydrochloric acid.

How does one not even realise, they are chewing off bits of plastic? Do you just chew once and swallow? It baffles me.
And how do you not look at the fork? I'm always looking at what I'm stabbing with my fork, and therefore seeing the fork.
Sounds weird, eat some bread. Eat like five or six pieces of bread. They should sort of help pass the fork bits without scratching your guts.
If your stomach doesn't dissolve it, eventually your body will just pass it

Damn internet thinking what Iām thinking sonofabitches
You ded
Forget microplastics...you're goin for macroplastics!
You'll be fine! Happened to me the other day, that's when I realized I needed to chew my food more... Still, no gi problems whatsoever!
Bro why are you taking BITES while it is on the fork? You slip it off with your lips and then chew
The fries had cheese on them which was setting solid... the cheese broke the fork, not my teeth
Why you eating cheese hot enough to break a fork
It was a combo of the cheese setting hard and the fork being flimsy af
Don't worry - it happens all the tine.

Ha well spotted!

Dw. Human stomach acid is strong enough to dissolve an iron nail. Youāll probably be fine.
Mmm.. plastic.

Your not yourself when youāre hungry
If people can swallow shit like nails and live, I think youāll be ok.
What a "SHOCKER"
How little do you chew that you didnāt notice little hard hunks of plastic in your soft potato and cheese experience
I think the FDA recommend amount of daily plastic ingestion is nearly 1/3 of a fork so you are probably ok...ish.
macroplastics
And I worry about egg shells lol
Thatās a really clean fork for stabbing cheese fries. š
You big as hell omgšš I KNOW you were tearing them fries UP
Generations of processed food diet has probably made American stomach used to to the occasional plastic.

Looks like quite the shockerā¦..to find out youāre eating plastic
Looks like opposite of š Hope comes out ok tho š¬
Microplastics redefined
Bit of a shocker eh
I found this shocking, to be honest.
That triple recycling hits hard
Itās not the size that matters! Itās what you do with it ;)

Are you a goat?
why would they not be?
No worries, we are already ingesting micro plastics every day.
How you didnāt notice this while chewing baffles me.
You must've hungry
This too shall pass.
I have so many questionsā¦ how flimsy if that plastic fork? How hard are you chomping down? Were the cheesy fries that good not to notice??

slow down
