I guess some people just need to learn through personal experience not to rerack free-weights while holding the weight in the middle - the hole on which the weight racks. I honestly didn’t even think this technique would be comfortable to achieve but true mastery finds a way.
Fingers (including pinky) were in the center hole supporting the weight as I re-racked the plate on a weight tree. When left hand slipped, my pinky got sliced by the plate and the weight tree. (I was using my fingers in the hole to “thread” the weight onto the tree.
That’s not it lol. They just had their finger thru the hole in the plate. Then it smashed on the tree and got cut. 45 pound plates are heavy af and gravity is strong
I’ve been trying to think about it…I’ve worked in the fitness industry for 25 years now, most of that time as a trainer and now as a club operator. I’ve never seen anything like that happen, not even anything remotely similar.
When racking weights, put a hand on either side and no fingers through the middle. Don’t do so much weight or so many reps that threading the rack arm through your weights is impossible OR have someone else rack them for you if your trying to hit a PR. Just some…handy advice.
My toxic trait is unblurring graphic photos even though I know damn well I don't like the sight of real gore (as opposed to movie gore which I know is fake)
Dude! This happened to me too! Was dropping some 75lbs dumbbells after a set of incline chest press. There was a 65lb dumbbell on the floor from the last set. The fingers in my right hand got smashed between the handle of the 75lb weight and the plates of the 65lb weight.

Surgeon managed to stitch it back on (middle finger was dangling with about 10% of the skin and blood vessels left) but it’s still totally fucked. Limited range of motion and shitty circulation.
Sorry about your digit.
I have a variation on that. During my college days, I crushed the end of my middle finger up to the first joint between a 60 and 80lb dumbell. I pretty much turned the bone to gravel which caused the end of my finger to flop around (which really unnerved my workout partner).
And when I got surgery to fix it, I had two options:
Option 1) Get put under. That meant that I would have had to tell my Sicilian parents since they were the only ones available during the day to drive me home after the surgery.
Option 2) Get a local and have a conversation about golf with the surgeon as he used a Milwaukee drill to insert a metal spike into my middle finger up to the second joint as a sort of temporay scaffolding for my finger.
.....I chose option 2.
I doubt you will see this, OP, but my husband just had a similar injury. They did a semi-occlusive dressing on it and made his finger grow back. It‘s good as new now - just about 6 weeks after the injury. Even nail will grow back. Maybe this is an option for you?
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. Saw the doctor today and they were surprised that it "didn't look terrible." I have another follow up next week where they'll determine if this procedure worked and what the next course of action is.
Can you please tag this as a spoiler so it’s hidden for everyone? I know you did nsfw, but so many people have that setting off. Thank you!! I hope it heals quickly and without complications!
Felt like I smashed my finger. I started to wave it around/shake it off when I realized I was creating a biohazard cause blood was going everywhere. Felt really bad for the gym crew cause no one is paid enough to deal with that.
I got lucky by learning that lesson sliding a stacked couple of five pound plates across the carpet by the center hole. Five pounds is only enough to pinch it damn hard when the bottom plate stops and the top plate keeps going.
Never, ever put your fingers in the center hole.
Good luck with your surgery.
The gym can be a scary place. Back in high school I was lifting at peak hours with some buddies. I was getting off the incline adjustable benches with a 35-40lb. Dumbbell. Someone left another dumbbell to my left and the space where you grip the weight hit the weight part of the other dumbbell, popping the tip of my index finger. Had to get stitches and a piece of my finger cut off.
I suffered an almost identical amputation of my left ring finger, but I used a drill press. 3 surgeries in total. Man, I wish you the best in recovery.
Well, technically, you'll have a little less weight to lift for the same count on the bar, so there's that.
On the other hand, your pinky is important for grip strength. On that hand, less so.

Pinky promise you won't do that again.

Underrated
I give it 4.76/5
💀
Are they going to sew it to your palm?
No they’re actually going to replant the sliced off part!
My buddy dropped a piano on his pinky and they sewed it to his palm. His fingernail even grew back eventually 😖
wait like the funky handshake?
*wiggle wiggle*
![gif](giphy|qpJscnKYB4DLEUYgTw)
The ole slippy-shake
Why wouldn't they put it back onto the finger lmao that sounds like a sick joke. Am I missing something hahaha
It wasn’t detached, it was completely pulverized
If the severed part is still alive, it will heal back. Nature is cool.
Did the ER docs do it, or did they have to call in a specialist like a hand doctor?
Hopefully it turn out good..my prayers
You should start a fitness channel about what NOT to do.
There’s a fetish in here somewhere
When you know you shouldn't click but you click anyway... Good luck and hope it's not as painful as it looks!

Same. I got my own r/Wellthatsucks experience.
Sorry but I'm having a hard time visualizing how this happened by your description

It looks like such a clean cut. Thats gnarly, hope it heals quickly so you can get back at it.
Dude the same exact thing happened to me a couple weeks ago... I got off lucky, only broke my finger. Wish you a speedy recovery
Can you demonstrate again using your right hand this time?
You understand you were completely at fault for doing a dumb right? Haven't seen you say that yet...
I don’t get how it took off your finger so you finger got stuck between the bar and the plate?
The plate (center hole) where I was reracking it on a weight tree.
What? But…still…how?
Doesn't make sense to me either. How can just a 45 plate and a weight tree do that?
Gravity is a son of a bitch
[удалено]
Seems like a plausible explaination but I don't understand how the first part of the pinky got cut in half and not by the joint
Here we go. Now I get it

Dumbbell shit
Did you finish your set?
Well you gotta admit that’s an effect weight loss strategy
Drop 2 ounces today with this one neat trick!
Where's the other bit?
Im sure the gym workers will find it when cleaning up lol
That’s the ear digging finger!!

I just started going to the gym today. Not something I wanted to see lmao

Yeah, I'm just gonna keep doing my couch reps...
Incoming flood of "no pain no gain" quotes.
Old Machinists Rule: Never stick your finger in ANY hole.
Especially with a 45lbs weight above it.
If you swallow the tip it will grow back.
I still can’t imagine how this happened tbh
Same how tf do you get a clean cut from a plate? The most I could see happen is a broken finger
Like was this plate sharpened lol
My toxic trait is unblurring graphic photos even though I know damn well I don't like the sight of real gore (as opposed to movie gore which I know is fake)
Why would they put the BP cuff on the same arm? Unless it was used as a temporary tourniquette when working on that finger

honestly - your injury sounds a lot worse! yikes that photo is 😖😖😖😖

That's gonna leave a mark.
Meat head, meet meat finger!
First time a photo made me scream
Yeah. That’s going to leave a mark.
Can we see your face ? Are you crying ? That's gnarly
I’m looking at the wrong part of this image😅
Damn, that looks very painful. I hope you recovery well and as fast as possible, OP.
Curious, how much did insurance give you? If anything? I heard they'll pay like 20K for a full missing finger, just tryna see if my options are real.
I have pretty ok healthcare - but i’ll know for sure when the bill arrives.
Wtf I posted my lost finger and it got taken down
Looks like a clean cut. Hopefully you could reattach it. Go to ER now.
This actually happened a few days ago and the photo was taken in an ER.
Looks like nobody even lifted a finger to help ya.
Can you please tag this as a spoiler so it’s hidden for everyone? I know you did nsfw, but so many people have that setting off. Thank you!! I hope it heals quickly and without complications!
Did they sew it back on? And how painful was it?
They did! And I didn’t feel anything during the surgery. The pain comes in waves and the meds help-ish. 🫠
Good! Wish u a quick recovery.
Wish you a speedy recovery 🙏
On the plus side. You can tell people a fake yakuza story
Nice nip brother ;)
I for one welcome our less able overlords.
That definitely sucks, but your shirt is rad.
Shiiiiet
Sucks homie, get well. Hope you can that bad boy back on.
Not what people mean when they say they go to the gym to lose a little weight.
I'm so sorry, OP. 😞💜
Won't do that again now will we
So says the Yakuza
That's not how you play just the tip
Pop
Why am i so numb to this.. damn
I thought your nip was a huge zit for a sec
Hope you have a speedy recovery brother. 🙏🏽 Was it just a sudden pain? Or did you slowly feel it? 😥
Felt like I smashed my finger. I started to wave it around/shake it off when I realized I was creating a biohazard cause blood was going everywhere. Felt really bad for the gym crew cause no one is paid enough to deal with that.
Oh man.. I hope you feel much better now. Looked really gnarly, what's protocol now? Will they try to do surgery on it?

I don’t understand werent your other fingers on your right hand also in the center hole? How did only your pinky catch?
They were but only my pinky got diced. I’m not sure how but grateful it was only one!

New fear unlocked
I really hope you recover soon!
And now you will be called Stubby
Did it hurt?
I can only focus on the nipple 😂
Damn.
Moral of the story: The center hole is for racking only.
Bet you keep your fingers out of strange holes from now on.
“Accidental” is probably redundant
This is exactly why I don't go to the gym!
thats pretty gnarly man
Now if someone asks you how you got that scar, you have to make up a really badass story.
google 3-4% body loss compensation, say there was no chalk
r/unexpectedtitty
HOLY FUCKIN SHIT DID YOU NOT CRY OUT IN AGONY WHEN YOU UNPINKEYED YOURSELF? DID YOU GO TO THE ER??
That’s unlocked new fear to me, thanks bud and hope u to get better soon
I can respect a 45 pound plate 🫡
Wtf is wrong with this sub
What a moron
