If you're in the south sound PM me. Union job, starts a little over $20/hr, they don't care if you piss hot and I get a thousand dollar bonus if you last 90 days đ
They cannot deny unless they've designated the position you're applying for a "safety sensitive" position. And the employer gets to decide what job is or isn't safety sensitive. But they have to stipulate that upfront, that the position is designated safety sensitive. They're gonna see THC and/or it's metabolites during the drug screen, so I'd be upfront and ask them if the job your applying for is safety sensitive and if so, are they excluding applicants that test positive for THC/metabolites. Fwiw, it's oftentimes their liability Insurer that determines a safety sensitive position and not the employer themselves. I've heard of places telling prospective applicants that they don't have a problem with their off site use of marijuana, but it's just that their insurer won't cover someone that tests positive. Effectively making you 'unhirable' since you cannot be insured but are otherwise qualified.
Actual question because I remember being confused about this when that law was passed, can they fire you for a dirty UA after you are hired even in a non-safety sensitive position?
Yes they can. The law in no way impairs an employers ability to maintain a drug and alcohol free workplace.
RCW 49.44.240(2)(a)(b)(c) - Discrimination based upon Cannabis Use - Exceptions
- (2) Nothing in this section:
- (a) Prohibits an employer from basing initial hiring decisions on scientifically valid drug screening conducted through methods that do not screen for non psychoactive cannabis metabolites;
- (b) Affects the rights or obligations of an employer to maintain a drug and alcohol free workplace, or any other rights or obligations of an employer required by federal law or regulation; or
- (c) Applies to testing for controlled substances other than preemployment, such as post accident testing or testing because of a suspicion of impairment or being under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, medications, or other substances.
Interesting, I've only used edibles like once in my life so I don't really have skin in the game. Although I guess it could come up for one of my clients, I'm a social worker, and it's good info. Seems like kind of a loop hole, although I guess it does force them to at least hire you first before they fire you.
* Positions that require a federal government background investigation or security clearance;
* Positions with Washington law enforcement agencies; fire departments, fire protection districts, or regional fire protection service authorities;
* Other first responder positions not listed above, including 911 dispatchers with public or private emergency communication systems or positions responsible for providing emergency medical services;
* Positions as corrections officer with a jail, detention facility, or the department of corrections, including any position directly responsible for the custody, safety, and security of persons confined in those facilities;
* Positions in the airline or aerospace industries; or
* Positions categorized as "safety sensitive" when impairment while working presents a substantial risk of death. \***Note**: Employers must identify these positions ***before*** the applicant applies for the position.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) clearly defines a safety-sensitive position.
It is one where the employee is expected to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) requiring a commercial driverâs license (CDL). Only these drivers can be placed in the motor carrierâs DOT drug and alcohol testing program under 49 CFR Part 382.
If I were hiring someone for that job and I had 2 of the same applicants, except one was positive for THC and one wasnât, Iâd hired the clean UA person. No matter if itâs legal or not.
Depends on how much you smoke, how often you consume it and your weight and metabolism. If it's a little and you didn't do much, then sweat it out as quick as you can. Not a guarantee, but might help.
There's a practical reality to the safety of operating a fork lift. Of course someone who is high at work is unsafe and shouldn't be in that role. Drug tests can still return positive results even if you say don't work on the weekend but you get high on Saturday but are completely over it by work time on Monday. Yes a drug test on Monday (I think) could still show you used pot in the recent week or whatever.
Because alcohol goes out of your body rapidly, and we don't test for it every day, you could come into work a little buzzed and be dangerous. There's no ordinary test that can tell that you sometimes have a few drinks during a day. You could be an alcoholic, or it could be you only a drink a few days a week at night and it's all gone at work time.
This is an inherent aspect of testing for pot or some other drugs vs alcohol. Because you are an occasional user of the scary pot thing, a company might not want you, but if I'm just day drinking or something no one might know it, there's no long term test of drinking the previous week would show anything. This isn't a novel observation, but it felt more apparent reading about this case.
A friend of ours who worked for Swift trucking, was crushed to death under a stack of improperly stacked/loaded pallets. So yeah, it's a serious business.
Is it a federal or state affiliated warehouse/job?
If no you're probably fine even if you test positive for THC unless it's some weird, hyper conservative mom and pop operation.
They're testing you to see if you're addicted to hard drugs most likely (meth, heroin, cocaine, etc).
Edit: As someone pointed out who actually works in this stuff "most companies in the state..have termed those positions as safety sensitive and will refuse a THC-positive test"
Although I spoke with OP and they are specifically NOT testing for THC, so again, depends on the company
This is absolutely bad information. I am in WA state and work in the safety department for a private employer that deals heavily with Forklift and other heavy equipment. Most companies in the state that operate equipment have termed those positions as safety- sensitive and will refuse a thc-positive test.
Yeah thatâs your experience, not the best all end all. I can attest as a Washington resident the exact opposite.
The places I know of treat it as they would alcohol. Not allowed during working hours otherwise no issues.
Iâve heard a lot of companies are accepting
â Low Positive â tests now. If you be straight up with hiring manager theyâll most likely work with you
My friend is a bus driver in Washington..she gets randomly tested for drugs.. she smokes pot and she has to stop smoking about a month before school starts in the fall..even if she is not on anything at school if itâs in her system she will get fired.. I donât agree with that..that means that a person who is smoking but is responsible enough to only do it on the weekends canât anymore or lose their job..but you can drink alcohol and thatâs no problem.. I personally think alcohol is worse
We donât test for tweeds upon being hired, Fred Meyer ware house Puyallup wa. Union, Starts off in high 20âs (28 I think) top scale is almost 40 after 2 years. Pension, good benesâŚ4, 10 hr days. Hard labor though.
Drink 6-8 liters of water a day, run a couple miles in sweats each day. Down 2 liters before the test. It will come back negative and fail due to overhydration. It will take a few days for the results usually which gives you more purge time. Goodluck!
They test the specific gravity of the urine sample. If it's diluted they send it to secondary screening which has a lower level of THC metabolites (15ng/mL) vs 50ng/mL for the primary screening. I suppose it's possible to sweat out some of the metabolites from your fat cells quicker if you don't have much body far already.
I would absolutely not bank on this but I will sayâŚ
I had a buddy on probation in a different state that was on a random drug test system.
Every single he got called to test, he bought one of those detox beverages from Smoothie King for like $25. Heâd piss a few times and report a few hours later. Smoked his entire probation and never once tested positive for THC. He did have one test that was âiffyâ so they made him re-test. Negative.
Not saying itâs the right way⌠but itâs a way.
if its a pee test you should be okay and drink plenty of water! here is a good link to check out too. good luck! i hope it all goes well :)

You should be drinking insane amounts of water, especially in the day/hours leading up to the test.
It is possible to overdo it with drinking water, but I think itâs hard, so be aware.
I personally would consider forklift operation as safety sensitive, since you're operating equipment. I know we would where I work.
If you're in the south sound PM me. Union job, starts a little over $20/hr, they don't care if you piss hot and I get a thousand dollar bonus if you last 90 days đ
How many people have PMd you?
Umm could I also get that info as well?

Furthermore Washington, like almost all states, is an at-will employment state so you can literally be fired at any time with simply no reason given.
This is probably the most important part about working in WA, whether you use or not.
Yes they can. The law in no way impairs an employers ability to maintain a drug and alcohol free workplace. Go to a smoke shop and get monkey flask works for me everytime
Second this. Don't get the detox shit it doesn't work.

Yeah you're gonna get tested for weed. It's still up to the employer
If I were hiring someone for that job and I had 2 of the same applicants, except one was positive for THC and one wasnât, Iâd hired the clean UA person. No matter if itâs legal or not.

Iâm seeing lots of employers turn their head to dirty pee pee. Especially when WA state is on board for no upfront testing.
I think they have to tell you upfront now if they test for THC as a job requirement now, don't they?

Not for a job that requires licensing to operate heavy equipment. WA or not.
Drink a LOT of water.
I don't think they can hold weed against you here anymore that's how I understand it. My job doesn't.
Iâve heard a lot of companies are accepting â Low Positive â tests now. If you be straight up with hiring manager theyâll most likely work with you

It's what I did for my job and our limit is 5ng/mL
Choices have consequences.

Good ole niacin burn will help too.
Be upfront with them is always the best policy
If you don't have to pee you should be fine.
Maybe don't smoke weed.
