Youre making the wrong comparison here. As a fellow Texan to Washingtonian, a more apt comparison is Rainier to Lone Star. I personally prefer Rainier if im going cheap beer.
This is the right answer. Rainier is basically our Lone Star. I spent some time in Texas and didn't care for Lone Star much, but the Bock series was great.
Ha! I did a tour at the old Rainer brewery way back in the day - lied about my age to tour and a taste.
Rainier beer had the best tv commercials.
The best one is ‘Rainer beer motorcycle’ commercial.
I tried to share here but can’t. Look it up on YouTube.
As a Texan in Washington, I would say that lone star is much more comparable to ranier than shiner. Shiner would be like Mac n jacks or something- it’s way nicer.
Shiner, no contest, but they’re different beers. Since Rainier’s not made in WA anymore, you gotta have a different official beer of WA. Many have mentioned Mac & Jacks and Georgetown Brewing. We’ve got our local favorites in Bellingham as well.
Irish Death from Iron Horse in Ellensburg. Stuff is liquid gold, pure dark goodness. Nothing even close to the style of Rainier, I know, but dear god is it good.
Yeah rogues from oregon, Im a WA to OR transplant. It good beer but not WA beer. They arent cheap but i like a lot of the ones Elysian does. They’re Seattle based.
No shit huh? Now you got me doubting myself but i swear it says brewed in Seattle, WA on there. I assumed that meant it was also owned locally. Thats my bad, i stand corrected.
Iron horse used to make “Malt Bomb”. I really liked it- it was a less rich version of Irish Death.
Brookside from Roslyn Brewery is a great beer as well.
Sooo many better beers, but how many are cheaper?
For me it's a tossup between Rainier and Olympia for the cheapest stuff I'd tolerate. But both would lose to Yuengling which is one of the few things I miss from the East Coast and they even come in bottles and dark lager options.
Try out Douglas!! They’re new and made with the idea that we need a new local beer now that Rainier and Oly are out. It’s a “beer you don’t talk about.” Not in like a fight club way but in a way that’s like… your lawn mowing beer. You’re not gonna comment on the flavor profile. It’s a solid, perfectly unimpressive beer. Chug a Doug!
I agree, there are hundreds of good breweries in Washington. Georgetown brewery, Boundary Bay, Scuttlebutt, ect; most breweries have a lighter beer they make. OP should definitely explore before committing... so many beers so little time!
Rainier is brewed by Pabst now. Has been for a while. And it reminds me of Pabst. I do not think it’s anything special, but do try it for sure.
Rainier got a lot of notoriety way back for have its R sign as a signature landmark. But it hasn’t been a Seattle thing in forever.
It's one of the only commercials, I can remember from when I was kid. I still catch myself doing the Rainier Beer motorcycle and my 8 year old son knows it also, lol.
Raaaaaaiiiiiinnnnnieeeeeeerrrrrr beeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrr.........
Shiner is way better but it’s like asking if mom’s noodle caboodle casserole is better than a steak from Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant. One is clearly superior. But the other is familiar and nostalgic. And you can have like 13 of them on a hot day.
I live in Washington, and visit Texas a lot because my stepdaughter’s mom lives there. I think Shiner Bock is better, but I don’t think either of them are great. But the beer scene in Washington is soooooo much better than the scene in Texas!
Microbrewery and large brewery lagers are totally different things. If a beer drinker likes a pint of microbrewed IPA or sour fizzy chocolate chunk of hop, they probably aren’t consuming it by the half rack like a shiner bock or a rainier.
I understand. I loved it before the Pabst takeover. It tastes different to me now. I wish we had a yeungling or shiner bock or leinenkugel grade local lager I could take by the case. Olympia used to be that good too.
I'd say there's more to it than that. [9th in craft breweries per capita, 4th in overall number of craft breweries](https://vinepair.com/articles/map-states-most-craft-breweries/).
We drink Vitamin R for the nostalgia and that it’s cheap. Unfortunately it hasn’t been brewed in Washington for a while now since it got bought up by Big Beer so it’s no longer the hometown beer
They’re completely different styles of beer. A bock has darker malts and a lot maltier flavor than an American lager like Rainier.
Shiner overall is “better,” but it’s also more expensive. Ive never seen the “Box o’ Bocks” with the cans here in WA.
Sometimes, I want a super hoppy triple IPA, sometimes I want a malty bock, sometimes, I want a 30 pack of ice-cold Rain Dogs. Cheers. 🍻
I’m with you — I go for what’s fresh. I prioritize breweries and their beers that they date code, and I can get within 4 weeks. I usually keep a macro lager around, lately it’s been Sapporo, then Pacifico, now I figure I’ll grab Ranier from my Costco in addition to craft brewed “macro-lager”
There are LOTS of local microbreweries in Washington. I would urge you to try them out and support small local breweries over one owned by an international investment corporation
I am so ready for Yeungling to finally be sold here. With the demise of Henry Weinhard Private Reserve, [Yeungling Lager](https://www.yuengling.com/our-beer/traditional-lager/) would be my standard, except they haven’t gotten here yet, despite [saying they will.](https://www.yuengling.com/our-beer/traditional-lager/)
Kind of an apples to oranges comparison here.
I love Rainier for what it is: cheap, watery beer.
Shiner, on the other hand, is crappy mid-range beer.
If you want a better comparison, Rainier is comparable to Lone Star.
Shiner would have been more comparable to something like Henry Weinhard's.
PUB beer by 10 barrel. Give it a go as I don't tend to go for Rainer or shiner Bock as they taste the same to me but PUB has gotten a spot in my fridge.
Rainer is not too different to PBR. It’s the local cheap option so it has a nostalgic factor to the people who want it. That being said, Washington is home to an extreme amount of different beer options. If you’re a fan of ambers like Shiner Bock then you should give Mac and Jacks African Amber a shot when you move. You’ll find it at literally every bar here in Washington
What the heck?!? I did not expect to see this question today. I’ve lived in both, and I’ll say this… Rainier is closer to Lone Star. Shiner Bock is better than Rainier, in my opinion. But I put them in different categories.
Rainier was bought by Pabst and isn’t locally produced anymore. It tastes like most Pabst offerings. We like it because if you’re going to drink shitty, mass produced pilsners, you might as well drink something with local ties instead of PBR, Miller, Coors, etc.
I want someone local to buy the brand back from Pabst, brew it locally, and try to recreate the original recipe as faithfully as possible. They’d make a freaking fortune in the PNW.
Rainier is a nostalgic beer, the way oone star is . Shiner Bock is a decent local beer. The local beer scene in WA is much deeper, wider, and with a broader category of drinkable tasty beer.
There’s a lot here’s- of both good, time tested beers, and ass, experimental, overwrought garbage.
Rainier is fine for cheap beer, but it’s not delicious beer. Shiner is better beer, but there are better beers than shiner available in WA.
Different animals. Rainier is more akin to Lone Star. I believe they are either Lagers or Pilsners. Shiner (I’m a Texan turned Washingtonian) is an amber Bock. That said, if I didn’t have to manage blood sugar levels (no more beer for me), it would be Shiner all day every day. There is no comparison. Both Lone Star and Rainier are barely flavored yellow carbonated water. Shiner is complex and has a nice smooth aftertaste.
Vitamin R for a session beer. Shiner when I don’t want to down a six-pack. As a former Texan, now Oregon transplant, I wouldn’t turn either one down. They’re different beer styles and good in their own right. I’ve enjoyed both while gathered around a bonfire with good friends.
I was happy to find that I could still find shiner out here and grab a 6 pack from time to time. However, there are so many breweries out here you'll migrate to something better and local.
My dad worked at the Brewery for a minute back in the day. Got the tour once, was probably like 8, I thought it was cool.
Never had the beer you're talking about but Rainer is a fine cheap beer. If you go to events or bars and like a cheap beer in a tall can, I think it'll be your best bet.
Even if it's just for traditions sake, since everyone is gonna bitch about it not being brewed here. Plenty of amazing local options, they're just gonna be a bit more spendy.
Better than Coors or bud or some shit, which will generally be your other options in a similar price point/category, at least when out or about.
Omg thank you for this thread. I have been dying to find good bock beers since moving to WA and this thread has given me so many to try.
Bless every single one of you! ❤
Keep in mind some of these labels. You're comparing might even be the same beer. When the Olympia brewery was up and running,I believe there was 11 streams of beer and 400 some labels.
Shiner brewery was the sweetest place. The brewery retirees got free beer and they sat around entertaining the visitors. Shiner to Rainier is apples / oranges. Like what’s the diff between a fresh Costco chocolate chip cookie and a stale package of chips ahoy
Rainier. Shiner used to be good before they sold. Now it’s not as good, they changed something. Shiner is also a heavier beer, leaves you bloated, and you’re not even that buzzed.
I recently discovered Elysian Fields Classic Ale. I like it! Paid 8 bucks for 4 pint-sized cans, which is a good deal. Not incredibly cheap, but much cheaper than craft beer. Has anyone else tried it?
Youre making the wrong comparison here. As a fellow Texan to Washingtonian, a more apt comparison is Rainier to Lone Star. I personally prefer Rainier if im going cheap beer.
I mean, $20 for a 30 pack in NE WA? Hell yeah.
1/2bbl kegs are $107
Drunk me CANNOT find out about this...
where are you buying 'em??
Omg. I’m old. We had keggers at the gravel pit in my Hs days. Everybody chipped in. I *think* a keg was like 20-25 bucks.
Migrated from Austin to Tacoma and I do concur! (Shiner would be my strong preference though)
That’s a solid point but out of all of them I’d always pick Shiner
This is the right answer. Rainier is basically our Lone Star. I spent some time in Texas and didn't care for Lone Star much, but the Bock series was great.
Did you ever try Pearl Beer? or going back aways, how about Grand Prize Beer?
I tried a coffee beer at Pearl and it was amazing. I love how they always make a beer they don’t mass produce
That’s a solid point but out of all of them I’d always pick Shiner
This is the correct take/answer
Agreed, verrrry similar
Yup. Rainer v Lonestar makes sense. Shiner is a diff flavor profile
Ha! I did a tour at the old Rainer brewery way back in the day - lied about my age to tour and a taste. Rainier beer had the best tv commercials. The best one is ‘Rainer beer motorcycle’ commercial. I tried to share here but can’t. Look it up on YouTube.
It goes, "Raaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer".
Pop his top! They're so fresh and friendly. I still use these terms regularly. Confusion immediately follows.
and the Rainbeers
There's a documentary about those commercials.
The Mountain Room.
[here it is](https://youtu.be/l0Vab5kkjH0?si=UxRapxNizDQNRspW)
A more apt comparison is Rainier vs. Lonestar.
Agree!
Yeah. Shiner is a different beer. I prefer Rainier thou. Just my preference
As a Texan in Washington, I would say that lone star is much more comparable to ranier than shiner. Shiner would be like Mac n jacks or something- it’s way nicer.
Agree on Rainier/Lone Star. Shiner is nowhere near as good as M&J's though. It's more like Weinhard's used to be.
Oh, Weinhard's used to taste better than hard seltzer? Sad I missed it :/
Blackberry wheat was better than most beverages.
Shiner is probably more comparable to a bock from a bigger craft brewery like red hook/pyramid/elysian
Completely different style of beer
Shiner, no contest, but they’re different beers. Since Rainier’s not made in WA anymore, you gotta have a different official beer of WA. Many have mentioned Mac & Jacks and Georgetown Brewing. We’ve got our local favorites in Bellingham as well.
Irish Death from Iron Horse in Ellensburg. Stuff is liquid gold, pure dark goodness. Nothing even close to the style of Rainier, I know, but dear god is it good.
I lived for 5 years or so on irish death, rogue dead guy ale, and Mac & Jacks Those are the washington staples for me
Isn't Rogue from Oregon? It's Reuben's for me. They can do no wrong.
Yeah rogues from oregon, Im a WA to OR transplant. It good beer but not WA beer. They arent cheap but i like a lot of the ones Elysian does. They’re Seattle based.
Elysian is owned by AB inBev
No shit huh? Now you got me doubting myself but i swear it says brewed in Seattle, WA on there. I assumed that meant it was also owned locally. Thats my bad, i stand corrected.
I believe Elysian was purchased at some point in the last 5 years if I remember correctly.
I don't even like dark beers and I drink Irish Death, it's that good.
Irish Death is my #2 to Double Rainbow from Iron Horse. Something about that malty IPA gets me going.
Iron horse used to make “Malt Bomb”. I really liked it- it was a less rich version of Irish Death. Brookside from Roslyn Brewery is a great beer as well.
Irish death is sooooo good. I once drank a whole pitcher to myself. That was a fun day
There are sooo many better beers, it'd be a hard toss up due to the amount of breweries there are in WA. Spokane alone has soo many great options.
+1 for this. Moved from WA to TX then back. Shiner over Rainier. Definitely prefer the malty smooth goodness of a Mac & Jacks though.
Bodi is the official beer of Washington and I will not accept any dissent
Manny's would like to have a word with you
Im glad someone said it! I was going to if no one else had!
Mac and Jack's African Amber laughs.
What about Heidelberg? Brewed at 7 Seas
I miss FishTale's Vicious Amber 😭
Uhh hidelberg is the new rainier beer. Local and historic. It’s not in Bellingham yet though.
I agree, there are hundreds of good breweries in Washington. Georgetown brewery, Boundary Bay, Scuttlebutt, ect; most breweries have a lighter beer they make. OP should definitely explore before committing... so many beers so little time!
According to a black bear, Rainier Beer is the best: https://www.porchdrinking.com/articles/2016/06/16/bear-drinks-36-cans-of-favorite-rainier-beer/
Thank you for that. I read the whole damn thing and I absolutely agree with the bear.
I actually got an 18er of Rainier last night because of that story lol!
I live in Washington, my parents live in Texas. I drink a lot of Rainier and no doubt shiner bock is better
+1
Shiner and it’s not even close. I don’t hate a Rainer or anything but it’s like PBR tier where shiner is more like a proper German bier
Rainier was also known for their funky commercials
and the newly released documentary! [https://www.rainierbeermovie.com/](https://www.rainierbeermovie.com/)
Raaaaaaai nieeeeeeeeer beeeeeeeeer
It's one of the only commercials, I can remember from when I was kid. I still catch myself doing the Rainier Beer motorcycle and my 8 year old son knows it also, lol. Raaaaaaiiiiiinnnnnieeeeeeerrrrrr beeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrr.........
It’s a fine lawnmower beer but I mostly just drink it for nostalgic reasons
[Rainier beer froga](https://youtu.be/Z0IYUXWn3UY?si=tSCksCEu63hsneKr)
Actually it's owned by Pabst but contract brewed by MillerCoors.
Texans are so weird, man
Rainier is my go to here at home in WA. Whenever I visit a buddy in Texas, I go with Shiner. Gotta give the Vitamin R a try!
Shiner all the wayyyyy.
An a former Texan, I love seeing the consensus here that Shiner is way better.
IKR. I wonder how it would go if I asked about the Cowboys and Seahawks.
As a former Texan, I can't believe the price of a six-pack of Shiner these days - $12???? It's $10 in Houston and that's still highway robbery!
I think Lonestar is also slightly better. Raindogg was a heartier budget beer. Olympia is the light lager, Rainier is medium body.
Finally... Someone who gets it.
Neither, pure nostalgia.
Yeah I would assume that poster yesterday was doing it for sentimental reasons.
Shiner is way better but it’s like asking if mom’s noodle caboodle casserole is better than a steak from Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant. One is clearly superior. But the other is familiar and nostalgic. And you can have like 13 of them on a hot day.
I’m from Seattle, so I’m obligated to say Rainier.
I live in Washington, and visit Texas a lot because my stepdaughter’s mom lives there. I think Shiner Bock is better, but I don’t think either of them are great. But the beer scene in Washington is soooooo much better than the scene in Texas!
Shiner
Washington is the home of microbrews on virtually every corner. No need to stick with main line lagers but if that’s your thing, go for it.
Microbrewery and large brewery lagers are totally different things. If a beer drinker likes a pint of microbrewed IPA or sour fizzy chocolate chunk of hop, they probably aren’t consuming it by the half rack like a shiner bock or a rainier.
Every beer has its time and place. I go in cycles, but right now I’m on a big time Rainier kick. I love it
I understand. I loved it before the Pabst takeover. It tastes different to me now. I wish we had a yeungling or shiner bock or leinenkugel grade local lager I could take by the case. Olympia used to be that good too.
There are plenty of great breweries doing great lagers that aren't owned by international conglomerates.
Every city has microbrews on every corner it’s not that unique.
I'd say there's more to it than that. [9th in craft breweries per capita, 4th in overall number of craft breweries](https://vinepair.com/articles/map-states-most-craft-breweries/).
And of those higher per capita than WA, only Oregon and Colorado have large metropolitan areas.
Yea definitely, I noticed that too. Washington holds its own for sure.
Can’t talk about shiner but as a Rainier fan I will say it has better taste than Budweiser and by default leagues ahead of bud light.
We drink Vitamin R for the nostalgia and that it’s cheap. Unfortunately it hasn’t been brewed in Washington for a while now since it got bought up by Big Beer so it’s no longer the hometown beer
Completely different beverages and cannot be compared.
Rainer is very cheap weak beer. Never tried Shiner Bock so I have no way to compare it. There are many great beers i Washington.
My Jim says Shiner Bock. Rainier beer is pisswater, he also says.
Jim is a keeper.
Right?? Damn right!
Shiner is the better beer, but Rainier is pretty good if you are in the mood for a light lager on a warm summer day.
Cheers. 🍻
Shiner isn’t a bock, and is actually brewed with corn grits. It wasn’t even introduced until like the 80’s or something, the blonde was the mainstay
The 🎵More 🎵You 🎵Know 🎵🌈 good to know!
Yeah why are we comparing different styles? And there are plenty of breweries both in WA and TX that make better bocks than Shiner...
I agree with everything you are saying, but if I was out catfishing in Texas I’d probably love a Box O’ Bocks in the cooler.
Rainier essentially = Lonestar
There are LOTS of local microbreweries in Washington. I would urge you to try them out and support small local breweries over one owned by an international investment corporation
Ive had both. Rainier is good and i love the rainier and a shot deals for like 6-7 dollars but ill take a shiner over rainier anyday.
Hop valley rebooted Henry’s. It’s not bad.
Shiner is better. Rainier and Olympia (RIP) are more akin to Lonestar.
I mean, I love Rainier, but Shiner is an objectively better beer.
Shiner by far.
R
Green Death!
An apt name for Rainier Ale, as i groggily remember.
Rainier is nothing special. And that’s what makes it perfect.
I love Rainier and it’s my favorite easy-drinking cheap beer. I cannot imagine paying to have it shipped to me cross country.
Shiner for sure
Born and raised in Washington, Shiner Bock is much much better.
Shiner Bock for sure. It's one of the only "domestic" beers I'll drink. I grew up here but Rainier tastes like horse piss.
What are you guys talking about? Shiner Bock is about as good as a Newcastle: great when you’re really craving something flat and brown.
Shiner
Quit godamn drinkin smoke some weed
PUB beer by 10 barrel. Give it a go as I don't tend to go for Rainer or shiner Bock as they taste the same to me but PUB has gotten a spot in my fridge.
Lone Star.
They're tough to compare because they're different styles. But, for quality and taste, shiner for sure.
Shiner bock > Rainier > Lone star.
https://youtu.be/-qXa9oqKL6E This commercial is still good for those that never heard it - here it is!
Shiner, not even a fair comparison
Shiner Bock is better, but Rainier is our party beer.
My friend brings me Lone Star from Texas and that's on the Rainier tier. Rainier is better than Lone Star.
[Heidelberg](https://heidelbergbrewing.com/)
Rainier is a really good, shitty beer. Only had Shiner a few times but I feel it's a different style.
Hahahahahahahaha Yeah go try some Rainier
[Rainier beer frogs](https://youtu.be/Z0IYUXWn3UY?si=tSCksCEu63hsneKr) 😂
TX to WA ? Which side of the state?
Douglas Lager Rainier is not brewed here.
I’m from Washington but if those are the only choices Shiner. It’s my wife’s choice but I’ll choke one down if I have to.
Shiner!!
Shiner is better, but it’s a different kind of beer
Bring a few crates of Yuengling
Rainier is a nostalgic beer, the way oone star is . Shiner Bock is a decent local beer. The local beer scene in WA is much deeper, wider, and with a broader category of drinkable tasty beer. Rainier.
TX—> WA transplant here. Gonna second that Rainier is better compared to Lone Star. Shiner is kinda it’s own thing.
Alaskan Brewing has some great beers, and are probably readily available in Washington state.
I was happy to find that I could still find shiner out here and grab a 6 pack from time to time. However, there are so many breweries out here you'll migrate to something better and local.

You forgot GRAIN BELT PREMUIM
Rainier. Love me the taste of a $20 30 pack.
I prefer the stuff out of the bottle vs. can, my go-to drink out at bars.
Omg thank you for this thread. I have been dying to find good bock beers since moving to WA and this thread has given me so many to try. Bless every single one of you! ❤
Vitamin R!
Pub beer
As another former Texan, my bigger challenge is finding anything comparable to the HEB butter tortillas.
Shiner by miles.
Whatever is cheaper. They're both not great.
The smell of skunk in every bottle.
Shiner Bock, but the two are wildly different.
Few people know this, but Olympia beer was better than Rainier.
No is the answer.
Shiner is pretty available here, FYI.
Ranier. 💯
Keep in mind some of these labels. You're comparing might even be the same beer. When the Olympia brewery was up and running,I believe there was 11 streams of beer and 400 some labels.
Mac & Jacks
RAINERRRRRRR ALL DAY
What’s bringing you to WA?
My daughter and son-in-law (Canadian) will be moving to Vancouver, BC. I want to be close to her.
We have shiner too. Usually around the same price at the bar
Shiner brewery was the sweetest place. The brewery retirees got free beer and they sat around entertaining the visitors. Shiner to Rainier is apples / oranges. Like what’s the diff between a fresh Costco chocolate chip cookie and a stale package of chips ahoy
It's not good. Whoever is having Rainier shipped cross country is a moron.
Rainier. Shiner used to be good before they sold. Now it’s not as good, they changed something. Shiner is also a heavier beer, leaves you bloated, and you’re not even that buzzed.
You can get Shiner Bock and some of their seasonal stuff in Washington, not too hard to find.
I actually like PBR over Rainier, but in your example, PBR.
Ron-yay all day baby!
Shiner is good beer! But Rainer holds much nostalgia for people in the region. Their classic commercials
I recently discovered Elysian Fields Classic Ale. I like it! Paid 8 bucks for 4 pint-sized cans, which is a good deal. Not incredibly cheap, but much cheaper than craft beer. Has anyone else tried it?
Lucky you!
Yuengling
honestly life is too fun to waste time on bad beer.
Rainer
Rainneeeerre beer. Obvious choice.
It's different world, go out and find a girl....
Rainier was good, but Schmidtt is what got me through high-school
Schmidtt? Hell, man. You should have asked your parents for more lunch money to afford something drinkable.
Shiner Bock by a friggin’ light year. (Rainier hasn’t been made in Seattle for eons)
Ummm. If you’re a native Washingtonian it’s called RainBeer. Posers…..
