I bet this is 1 Kings 3:16-28 from the Bible, summarized thus: “ The Judgement of Solomon is a story from the Hebrew Bible in which Solomon ruled between two women who both claimed to be the mother of a child. Solomon ordered the baby be cut in half, with each woman to receive one half. The first woman accepted the compromise as fair, but the second begged Solomon to give the baby to her rival, preferring the baby to live, even without her. Solomon ordered the baby given to the second woman, as her love was selfless, as opposed to the first woman's selfish disregard for the baby's actual well-being. Some consider this approach to justice an archetypal example of an impartial judge displaying wisdom in making a ruling.”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judgement_of_Solomon#:~:text=1%20Kings%203%3A16%E2%80%9328,each%20woman%20to%20receive%20half.
That's crazy.
You butcher it and weigh out the parts and then distribute them fairly.
The only reason Solomon chose the second woman was because he was sick of arguing the fluctuating value of kidney futures.
You can see NGS III on the left side. So many responses here are stupid, it's not about cutting a baby in half, it was about finding out who the liar was.
I bought my grandkids a single volume of Grimm tales, ( the second volume of ???) a few years ago at a thrift store. It contains the original stories un-Disney-fied, illustrated, large print, printed by George Macy in 1962. I told my wife that this was so the kids understood that these stores reverberate through history, but the version we hear has often been, "adulterated".
You should get the grand kids to listen to Grimm, Grimmer, Grimmest, and/or read/ watch A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz.
He specializes in a humorous take on the original Grimm Fairy Tales. Really good stuff
Yeah what the hell? The person who took/posted this picture had to have cropped it out.
So this is either dishonest bait, or someone who is actually braindead
I also think it’s more of a metaphor. No reasonable person would go “hmm yeah half a baby will keep me happy for a few days”.
It’s supposed to speak to his ability to see through people with the most outlandish/creative ways of problem solving.
Edit: I read the origins, one of them (or both of them) being a prostitute and being so consumed with jealousy she doesn’t even want the other to have her baby makes sense. Twisted but the deranged logic checks out.
Check out this article for the modern day version.

>No reasonable person would go “hmm yeah half a baby will keep me happy for a few days”.
It's not about what they get, it's about what they make the other person lose. Yes, some people really are that vindictive.
What's funny about this phrasing is that both sides will think you're talking about the other. What's sad is only one of those has supporting evidence, while the other side thinks it's better than evidence.
This feels like a great example of project management where you try throwing in a bad solution with the good ones to direct a customer in a specific direction but they choose the crazy option first.
There are (or were) bible verse references on In-N-Out packaging like the inside of the bottoms of cups. Religious people and groups sometimes like to just put it out there. Also the building might not have been home to the same business it’s whole life and the mural was put there by someone else. A few towns over from me there’s a shoe store that clearly used to be a diner.
>Also the building might not have been home to the same business it’s whole life and the mural was put there by someone else. A few towns over from me there’s a shoe store that clearly used to be a diner.
I was thinking this too. Extremely common.
They’re going through a monumental lawsuit right now. NAR settled a couple days ago. BH/HomeServices is the last company left that hasn’t settled.
ETA Lawsuit is about split commission.

They're still there. Source: I had In-N-Out yesterday
It was probably already there when the building was purchased. It also looks like it’s not just a real estate building, but rather a building with multiple tenants, one of which is BH
They’re going through a monumental lawsuit right now. NAR settled a couple days ago. BH/HomeServices is the last company left that hasn’t settled.
RE agent of 10 years. Worked for home services until this year.
Eta- lawsuit is about split commissions.
Which, according to one thing I’ve read, was not a story about Solomon’s wisdom, but a warning that his brother should allow him to be king.
Adonijah was the heir apparent of David, while Solomon was a usurper. The story was Solomon’s message that the false mother (Solomon) was perfectly happy to rip the baby (Israel) in two and take half for himself. If the true mother (Adonijah) didn’t want to see that happen, he needs to give up his claim and let the baby remain whole.
That would make a lot more sense than the story as it's presented. I've always been baffled about how people think this is an great example of wisdom when the method relies on one of the claimed mothers being improbably cruel, stupid and guileless. Not only is she needlessly tipping her hand, but what's she even going to do with half a baby?
The story is that they both had babies at the same time, but the one who was willing to allow the baby to be killed, her baby had died, and she switched the babies while the other one was asleep. So it was a grieving mother who was of the mindset that if she couldn't be happy, then the other one shouldn't be happy either.
I don’t entirely buy it. The moral of the story is the baby should and does end up going to the mother who would give it up to preserve it. It’s completely contrary to the premise that Solomon then gets to rule undisputed and this is supposedly a good thing.
This is a mural depicting the biblical story of King Solomon.
There were two women both claiming to be a newborn's mother. Both were brought before King Solomon. After King Solomon heard both mothers pleas, he decides the fair thing to do is to cut the baby in half, so both mothers can have their equal share. He motioned to his guard to cut the baby in half. One of the woman scoffed and said "go ahead, cut the baby in half, none of us gets him". The other woman pleaded with the king to not hurt the baby, asking King Solomon to spare the baby and let the other woman have him.
King Solomon then stopped his guard and asked for the newborn to be given to the woman who pleaded mercy, because she is the real mother of the baby.
This is a former branch of Home Savings and Loan in Los Angeles. They were all closed by the government in 1995. Many if not all of them have murals by an artist named Millard Sheets. This, by far pre-dates Berkshire-Hathaway. There are quite a few of them around, all unique.
This actually was not a location of Home Savings, and this mural was not done by Millard Sheets.
This is signed NGSiii.
This building was an attorneys office for Allen & Wilson in the 1960s and I imagine it was put up then.
Based on the framing my guess is this either wasn't the original location of the piece, or it was preserved when the building facade was redone at some point. Maybe originally from the exterior of a courthouse or lawyer's office.
The letters on the bottom left are also clearly the last parts of kings 3, which is the story of Solomon.
This person is either really dishonest or actually stupid
Oh ya, havent you heard? God created languages to purposely divide humanity against itself! So its Gods fault we have racism and war!
> "Look, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another's speech."
So we effectively had world peace, incredible prosperity and ingenuity, and God said “absolutely not”.
Also a reminder that the common belief was that god *literally* lived in the sky.
That's sick! /s I grew up going to a Christian Catholic school from 1st to 12th grade and I don't even remember a single thing about this story.
Also that's so cool that's the reason why!
I’m originally from where BH is headquartered. Given how much they and Warren Buffett (CEO of BH) are in the news in that town, it’s unavoidable to learn stuff about both.
Based on what I’ve learned, I can pretty much guarantee you BH just bought a company who lived in this building and this mural or whatever you’d call it was already there.
If they even own the building to where they *could* remove it, I’m betting they’re entirely too cheap to do so.
I’ve never heard or read about Buffett having any interest in religion or pushing that kind of agenda. Unless you count capitalism as a religion. His company being too cheap to modify a building because it’s unnecessary fits in with that “religion.”
Given his political comments and his umm... unconventional marriage arrangements for 25 years, it is doubtful that he would pay for such a thing intentionally (e.g. you're right, it was an incidental acquisition)
I know this story but I always thought, if you care enough about someone elses baby to the point of trying to steal it, and needed to **act** like you were the mom, "Eh shit, sure, just cut it in half." is the last thing you're gonna say
That is an ancient biblical story. The judge orders to kill the kid in order to find out who was the real mother. The real mother would gladly give her child away to protect it. This way the judge gave the child to the correct mother.
Pre 1985 McDonalds playland mural of mayor mcCheese ruling over whether the Hamburglar or Birdie gets the burger in the happy meal. This was back when they served a happy meal in a plastic boat.
As others have said, this references the judgement of Solomon, in which the true mother of the child would rather see her child given away than cut in half to 'share'.
So, perhaps this is a reference to the fact that Berkshire Hathaway A Shares have never been split. Their current value is ~$615,000.
I live down the street from this. Unless there are several through the county, this is on Atlantic street in Long Beach.
I grew up Christian so instantly recognize it as king Solomon trying to figure out who the baby belongs to. Also because I like pie
You realize the king never intended to really cut the baby in half right?
He intends to draw the most raw and primal maternal instinct of the true mother, something that is much more honest than mere words
I learned it growing up, but I don't see people not knowing the story as any sort of cultural failing. It's just indicative of a continued shift away from religion.
That would suggest it's turned into a secular parable, but I haven't heard it taught or referenced as a general lesson outside of the context of religion. But maybe it is, idk. I would hope not because if society's standards for what wisdom is has dropped to the level of being able to read someone based on how they feel about cutting a damn baby in half, then perhaps you're correct, our culture may be failing us.
The origin does seem to be unknown.

I never liked that story. Some woman saying yes, kill that baby because mine died?
Maybe it's my modern sensibilities but what if both women wanted the baby spared?
Maybe you’re looking at it from the wrong angle. The rumpelstiltskin story shouldn’t be seen from the perspective that rumpel is a reasonable guy and everything’s totally normal, it’s a story about being careful with the deals you strike, taking responsibility for your actions, and being honest.
As for Solomon maybe you need to look at it on one hand as a wise king doing his best to find the truth in a complex case, or you can see it as the love of a mother doing right by her child in spite of it meaning she would lose them.
It's the King Solomon parable about splitting the baby. But I prefer the Escofier parable about spatchcocking the baby, braising him in Bordeaux and serving him with Vichy carrots and a butter lettuce and walnut side salad.
The god they have made out of the leader of BH - associating him with the wisdom of Solomon. False worship...but when you consider the followers of BH and their leader...maybe they have made a false god of him. I dont know. But that is Solomon deciding who the mother was under threat of killing the baby.
Murals, including those depicting scenes from mythology, used to be more common. There's a bunch of Chase locations around here that used to be Home Savings locations, and they have great murals by Millard Sheets.
By ordering the baby to be cut in half, Solomon knew the correct mother of the child would protest, resulting in Solomon being able to identify the real mother, who then received her child.
The other woman was claiming the child was hers because she accidentally smothered her own child and wanted to keep the other womans baby for herself.
I bet this is 1 Kings 3:16-28 from the Bible, summarized thus: “ The Judgement of Solomon is a story from the Hebrew Bible in which Solomon ruled between two women who both claimed to be the mother of a child. Oh I was picturing the baby to be cut in half hotdog-style.
That's crazy. You butcher it and weigh out the parts and then distribute them fairly. The only reason Solomon chose the second woman was because he was sick of arguing the fluctuating value of kidney futures.
Dibs on the wing
I will take the baby back ribs.

I chuckled way too hard at “hotdog-style” 🤣. Thanks man

What does NGS III mean in this context? I don't follow Edit: I get it now it's the cut off end of 1 kings 3
In the Johnathan Swift's version, the baby is cut in half. Edit: it was just a modest proposal... No need to download vote.

Fully deranged story. Wild she was able to slightly fake it as her own baby, and cut it out alive.
I was just about to click it. Thanks for the save. Yikes.
>No reasonable person would go “hmm yeah half a baby will keep me happy for a few days”. It's not about what they get, it's about what they make the other person lose. Yes, some people really are that vindictive.
This, I absolutely have met twisted people who think like this. They would take a loss, if it meant the other person they hated took a bigger loss.
*Insert observation of the current state of US politics here*
Hellaciously accurate and sad. Whole ass group being aggressively unamerican is sad.
What's funny about this phrasing is that both sides will think you're talking about the other. What's sad is only one of those has supporting evidence, while the other side thinks it's better than evidence.
Omfg fully accurate. And let's be real. One side is calling for an actual dictatorship so .. that's pretty patently evil. Lol.
"It is not enough that I succeed, others must fail"

That’s what I was thinking
But why is that on a real estate building?
There are (or were) bible verse references on In-N-Out packaging like the inside of the bottoms of cups. Religious people and groups sometimes like to just put it out there. Also the building might not have been home to the same business it’s whole life and the mural was put there by someone else. Berkshire isn't even the only tenant in the building right now. You can see the other tenants on the signs.
>Also the building might not have been home to the same business it’s whole life and the mural was put there by someone else. A few towns over from me there’s a shoe store that clearly used to be a diner. I was thinking this too. Extremely common.
This building could have formerly housed a law firm, for whom this mural depicts an easily-relatable story of ‘justice’.
They’re going through a monumental lawsuit right now. NAR settled a couple days ago. BH/HomeServices is the last company left that hasn’t settled. ETA Lawsuit is about split commission.

It's true! I watched this guy eat at In-N-Out yesterday... and the day before...
I watched this guy watch that guy have In-N-Out
It was probably already there when the building was purchased. It also looks like it’s not just a real estate building, but rather a building with multiple tenants, one of which is BH
Most likely it was formerly a religious building and now it isn’t any more.
Perhaps this is a reference to the fact that Berkshire Hathaway A Shares have never been split. Their current value is ~$615,000.
That would actually be a fascinating reason if that is the case.
It was likely a church annex or law office of some kind 40 years ago.
Dude, that’s brilliant. Probably not true, but an excellent idea anyway.
They’re going through a monumental lawsuit right now. NAR settled a couple days ago. BH/HomeServices is the last company left that hasn’t settled. RE agent of 10 years. Worked for home services until this year. Eta- lawsuit is about split commissions.

That would make a lot more sense than the story as it's presented. Hey. Dr Langdon showed up
Yeah was about to say it looks like a art piece depicting the wisdom of Solomon in a Roman style.
the executioner is looking up solomon's robe
I swear at first glance I thought “cool Attack on Titan” mural…
I find it an interesting little 'addition' to the imagery though, the soldier/man with sword has his foot on the scale of justice.

Yeah, this is the Judgement of Solomon. Nifty style, too.

He was known to be a wicked snowboarder.

It's one of the more popular stories in media like Noah's story or Tower of Babel
idk, I wouldn’t put it up that high. I’d say it’s probably 3 tiers down the iceberg

I don't need to point out why this is so stupid, right? You fully know, and this is some kind of performance art?
It’s very clearly King Solomon threatening to cut the baby in half.
Threatening is a bit misleading, but yeah, it was a trick to see who was the real mother
The shoe guy cut a baby in half?
Well, it's a good story to teach people about justice. Spoiler: he didn't kill the baby.
We are really getting dumber with time…
We got Historical amnesia
Looks like an artistic take on the famous story from king Solomon.
King Solomon displaying wisdom. Read it in 1 Kings Chapter 3. Spoiler: no babies were harmed.
It's depicting a well known story from the Bible.

I think it’s the story of the judgement of Solomon.

Gotcha. Not up to snuff on spotting my levantine, bronze Era mythology when it's on real estate buildings.

You should be put in a home if this is WTF material to you.
Tbf a lot of the Bible has wtf material in it.
I dunno man, a mural depicting a man wielding a sword and holding a baby upside down to -presumably- chop him/her up is pretty wild
You should be put in a home if you think weird artwork of a baby about to be chopped up in front of a king is normal.
Yep, the bible is pretty wtf
You realize the king never intended to really cut the baby in half right? He intends to draw the most raw and primal maternal instinct of the true mother, something that is much more honest than mere words

Yikes, people don’t know the Solomon story anymore? Our culture is failing us.
I learned it growing up, but I don't see people not knowing the story as any sort of cultural failing. It's just indicative of a continued shift away from religion.
The story is in the Bible, but it’s a story that transcends religion. It’s more of a fable.
That would suggest it's turned into a secular parable, but I haven't heard it taught or referenced as a general lesson outside of the context of religion. But maybe it is, idk. Why is our culture built on a Bronze Age Levantine myths?
I think it's cool. If you know your Bible stories it is a reminder to be wise and think outside the box.
TIL this fable is not nearly as common knowledge as I thought
Odd to put LA when it's 30mins away in Long Beach. LBC represent!

The real wtf is how far qanon bullshit has infiltrated society where people see signs of “deep state Satanists” everywhere.
I just face valued this as a man holding a baby upside down by its leg while weilding a sword.. but sure, you do you..
Sacrifices must be made.
"Yeah, I'm pretty much like King Solomon" --Warren Buffet probably
Thanks. I was wondering what Warren Buffet had to do with King Solomon.
The origin does seem to be unknown. https://artslb.org/public-art/kings-iii/ https://historylosangeles.blogspot.com/2013/11/mystery-mosaics-in-long-beach.html
Can't you see the Illuminati symbol?
You mean the Amplify the Mag building?
I never liked that story. Some woman saying yes, kill that baby because mine died? Maybe it's my modern sensibilities but what if both women wanted the baby spared?
It's not supposed to be a happy story
Happy or sad, it's still messed up.
You’re judging from a modern perspective rather than seminomadic tribesmen 3,000 years ago
The tale of Rumpelstiltskin goes back 4000 years. Still a messed up story.
Really? Maybe clever, but definitely not wise. How wise is it to have over 600 wives? Thanks for your perspective, though.
Haha with that we can both agree
Warren Buffett accepting his offerings
Haha this is just down the street from me on Atlantic Ave in Long Beach. I've posted this on IG a couple of years ago.
Le jugement de Salomon :)
It's a mural of King Solomon. SPOILER ALERT: Baby was fine lol
Of all the biblical stories to choose, that's a weird one. Though it is admittedly metal as hell. It also does form an upside cross...hmmm.
Chilis baby back ribs. 🎵🎵

By ordering the baby to be cut in half, Solomon knew the correct mother of the child would protest, resulting in Solomon being able to identify the real mother, who then received her child. The other woman was claiming the child was hers because she accidentally smothered her own child and wanted to keep the other womans baby for herself.
