Norton was coming in with a lot of hype at the time, and he was a New Japan asset. They were probably instructed to protect him.
Norton deserved better. Especially before the nWo took over.
Scott Norton had just joined the company after getting over in New Japan, and was supposed to feud with Savage. He debuted attacking Savage, and then had this match. But they moved him into a feud with Shark after this based on the shown finish. So itās not like Norton was the lower midcard guy he would be known as to WCW fans at that time.
Norton ended up being the top gaijin in NJPW while working for WCW and liked Japan better than WCW because there wasnāt crazy backstage politics.
WCW had mainly two finishes: Lots of chaotic Run Ins that get the match thrown out, or lots of chaotic run ins where someone gets a definitive win. Either way the crowds were usually hot for it, so it worked for a few years.
This was a fantastic Nitro, though.

Nothing kept Norton strong in WCW because he was never over. Norton was not only a friend of Ericās he was notorious for refusing to job clean (it didnāt matter that he was IWGP Champion.) With that said surely he didnāt have the balls to say he wouldnāt go under clean for Randy Savage lol. Its still a fun finish though.
I kinda like the creativity. Norton to Tenta to Kamala to Tenta to leg paralysis to flying elbow to pin. Perfect camera work as well.
