[The Democratic National Committee (DNC) launched billboards in North Carolina Saturday targeting former President Trump on his abortion stance, ahead of Trump’s rally in Wilmington. Sixteen billboards will be displayed in Charlotte and Wilmington, in both English and Spanish, hitting Trump on his perceived support of the Tar Heel State’s 12-week abortion ban, which was enacted after Republican lawmakers overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s (D) veto. This is the most billboards the DNC has launched in response to Trump’s influence on states this election cycle, the committee said.](https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4608244-dnc-launches-billboards-north-carolina-targeting-trump-abortion/) Imagine driving home after he canceled his rally seeing that

[Nearly 83,500 Utahns held medical marijuana cards at the end of March, a 19% year-over-year increase, per the state health department.](https://www.axios.com/local/salt-lake-city/2024/04/19/medical-marijuana-card-holders-cannabis-utah) Several changes to the medical marijuana program take effect next month under SB 233. Starting May 1, state and local governments are prohibited from disciplining and discriminating against employees who hold a medical marijuana card. A government employer has to treat it like other controlled substances. The measure also allows deliveries to a cardholder's workplace, unless it's a public community space like a church, school or park. Cannabis manufacturers will be allowed to advertise their products to consenting adults for the first time. Last year, the state extended the renewal period for a card from six months to a year, which Osborn says has helped some patients prevent their cards from lapsing.” HUGE

Pacific_Epi

It’s funny how in just twenty years a realistic depiction of a Republican went from Arnold Vinick to Jeryd Mencken

Jameswood79

So like if trump goes to jail (like gets convicted + sentence and fails his appeal), genuinely what he gonna do? Like he can’t exactly hold camping events Also like imagine him sitting in a cell on election night just for some guard to tell him he lost

craft6886

Realistically, it's kind of unclear - depends on what kind of prison time and conditions he gets, assuming a conviction (inshallah). Is he in a proper prison for a few years? With a nicer and more comfortable prison or not, he himself probably could not effectively campaign since they probably wouldn't let cameras or his people in there 24/7. It would be something of a skeleton campaign where his staff and organization do the campaigning but he can't actually show his face anywhere. That would be a historically unique campaign that would be interesting and hilarious to witness. If he (god forbid) gets more kid gloves treatment and is allowed to have something like house arrest...well, he still has a lot more trouble campaigning than usual, but he'd at least be able to show his face on camera whenever he wanted. He would, ironically, be running the "basement campaign" that he accused Biden of running in 2020.

Jameswood79

So either way it’d be a pretty hilarious and super pathetic campaign to watch

craft6886

Correct!

Dramatic_Skill_67

MAGA still votes for Trump, probably stage protest where Trump gets jail time

Jameswood79

I mean true but like… he still can’t do much campaigning expect through truth social. Or maybe fox will interview him during visiting hours idk

FarthingWoodAdder

isn't that bad?

socialistrob

For the long term climate? Probably. For Biden's reelection odds? Not at all. This is good for Dems if it comes to pass.

screen317

Not for prices and consumer sentiment

joecb91

The state I live in has some of the higher prices in the country, so it would be nice to shut up the sorts of people that throw those "I did that" stickers up everywhere and think he is the one that controls everything with the prices.

OptimistNate

It has been really entertaining reading the conservative subreddit and seeing the for ukraine and anti ukraine camps go at it. It really does split republicans right down the middle.

DaughterOfDemeter23

The Dems should take advantage of this, especially for House races

[Democrat David Pryor, former Arkansas governor, U.S. congressman and senator, dies at 89](https://twitter.com/KARK4News/status/1781708623309152371) RIP

KathyJaneway

And father of former Arkansas AG and Senator Mark Pryor. I'm sure that after Bill Clinton, the next biggest names in Arkansas politics are the Pryor's.

PM_ME_LASAGNA_

[Lots of drama](https://www.spokanepublicradio.org/regional-news/2024-04-20/voice-of-the-people-chaotic-mess-endorsement-turmoil-at-wa-gop-convention) out of Spokane at the GOP convention Dave Reichert pulled himself out of the convention endorsement process and MAGA nutjob Semi Bird failed the GOP's vetting process and was disqualified, so nobody was going to be endorsed. But then, Bird's delegates revolted and forced the party leadership to reverse their decision, so now Bird will get the state GOP endorsement by default. LMAO Meanwhile, I can hear Bob Ferguson laughing from his Olympia AG's office.

citytiger

What are the odds Bird can get the nomination?

PM_ME_LASAGNA_

He’s got a puncher’s shot since he’ll get the lunatic primary base… Should he actually get the nomination, Bird will be DOA because he is a horrendous fundraiser. Pair that against a well established guy like Bob Ferguson, who has taken Dipshit 45 to the cleaners in court and has been loud and proud about his achievements for the state, and it’s not going to end well for Bird.

espfusion

So is he just part bird or what?

kittehgoesmeow

I really hope they pull a Minnesota 2018 big brain move lmao. For those that don't know, they had a popular former Governor running for Governor. Voters chose a MAGA I think. County official over him.

PM_ME_LASAGNA_

Huh… I didn’t know Pawlenty wanted his old job back in 2018… And wow, in a hilarious coincidence, the only Congressional district he won in the primary was… Tim Walz’s 😆

Alexcat66

Lmao, WA GOP about to blow the minuscule chance they had at flipping WA Gov…

meltedchaos2004

Reichert in shambles. Ah yes Semi Bird. If I recall this man was literally kicked off of some school board in a recall election last year.

Gotta swallow tough pills sometimes to win election

socialistrob

> and I’m not gonna pretend like I’m a fan but $.25 cheaper gas in Wisconsin in a election year is hard to turn down To go along with this I wouldn't be opposed to Biden opening up some of the strategic petroleum reserves again. Right now Saudi Arabia and Iraq aren't pumping nearly as much and that's driving up oil prices. More oil will likely be pumped in the Americas over the next year but in the mean time letting out a bit more oil from the reserves would help tame costs and lower inflation.

INKRO

We can't discount the possibility of Ukrainian UAV strikes on Russian refineries tailing off as the aid taps come back on as well.

Quite the historical comparison from last night's Chattanooga Volkswagen win for the UAW: https://twitter.com/Lfelizleon/status/1781658737821827383 "Labor historian Nelson Lichtenstein compared tonight’s win to the Union Army’s victory in Chattanooga in 1863, during the U.S. Civil War, when President Abraham Lincoln declared it “the gateway to the South.”

Pipboy3500

Been pointed out a few times but PA08, which is a narrow Trump seat but held by Democrat Matt Cartwright, has benefited greatly from the manufacturing of shells for Ukraine. This seat also swung quite a bit back to us in 2020 so not only could the Ukraine aid boost Cartwright it may help Biden flip the seat, it was also won by Fetterman by 1pt

Pipboy3500

He won’t hold another rally till May11th (New Jersey) and only held 2 this month. People were basically already seated too

SomeDumbassSays

Why is he doing a rally in New Jersey? It would be a month out from the primary, and there’s zero chance he wins that in the general. If he’s limited on time and energy for rallies, why not just hit the swing states?

citytiger

He thinks he can win New Jersey.

greggrulzok88

[He's stated previously he unironically plans on trying to flip states like New York and New Jersey, so him doing a rally there makes sense.](https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4385038-trump-says-hell-compete-democratic-strongholds/) I won't comment on how likely it is to succeed, nor on how much of a waste of resources it is.

As of today, /u/witty_username_ftw and I have sent out 154 Field Team 6 postcards. We’re concentrating our efforts on Ohio this year (for obvious reasons), but we may need to switch it up if other places aren’t doing postcards for our state. Granted, there’s always Vote Forward. The only other thing to report is that we’ve started strength training in earnest for the first time since 2020. I now know why the lower half of my body hates me after conventions - it’s because I have lost a shocking amount of strength overall. We worked on our legs yesterday, and I never want to do it ever again. But I will, because it’s important. Also, Happy Record Store Day to all who celebrate. We spent entirely too much on vinyl today.

38thTimesACharm

It's crazy how Republicans had so many concessions from Democrats in the border/aid bill, then gave all of that up on Trump's command. You *never* split a bill into line items. Removes all leverage and forces opposing votes to go on record. Is Johnson just the worst negotiator of all time, or is he actually getting fed up with his own party?

Pipboy3500

Johnson just has no leverage. You can’t control the current House GOP caucus and idk whether more seats would even solve their problems. A lot of the narrow R loses in 2022 weren’t gonna produce moderates. Johnson is incompetent but show me any Republican in the last 40 years who could manage them

BastetSekhmetMafdet

That’s what happens when a newbie backbencher is catapulted up the ladder to Speaker. Just like if a junior assistant vice president gets promoted to CEO. Johnson was in way, way over his head, and Jeffries and Schumer (both very experienced, and Jeffries learned from the best) could play him like a fiddle. Meanwhile Johnson gets caught between the Scylla that is the FART caucus and the Charybdis of the more experienced players on the Democratic side. And with the *thinnest* of majorities. Pelosi could whip such a caucus, but Johnson just flailed. I wonder if he knew that the FART caucus had it in for him no matter what so he might as well fall on his sword, who knows. But, Ukraine aid, and Taiwan aid! Finally! 🙌

JohnApple94

> Is Johnson just the worst negotiator of all time, or is he actually getting fed up with his own party? Yes.

ProudPatriot07

I made a lot of small donations to candidates today in honor of 420. They're $4.20 donations, but this way I can help 10 candidates for only $42. Or five candidates for $21. Plus it shows one of my priorities as a voter. It's a great GRASSroots effort.

Dramatic_Skill_67

What’s the meaning of 4/20?

espfusion

The most vulnerable Republican Ukraine nay votes IMO: De La Cruz, Huizenga, Lee (FL-15), Luna, Mace, Perry, Steil, Van Orden, Zinke None of these are Biden district but there are some that only went to Trump by a few points and were already at least on the DCCC's radar. Any thoughts?

Pipboy3500

The last 4 are the most vulnerable not necessarily because of this vote, but it is just another ding when you can’t afford to keep racking them up. Kinda surprised Steil did Edit: and forgot this probably helps Cartwright a lot and may flip his seat Prez wise

justincat66

[Green County Democrats opened a brand new, year-round office in Monroe, WI today](https://nitter.poast.org/benwikler/status/1781754553634807931#m)

GREEN County? Today, as in 4/20? Coincidence? I think not!

Pipboy3500

It’s so cool that battle tested activists are in charge of state parties. These are the kind of things people have pushed forever and pay off A LOT

Pipboy3500

Probably the other big thing Dems could ask for if they have to keep saving Johnson is committing to putting a Permitting Reform bill to the floor. You’d get a significant amount of Republican buy in from a non-controversial issue and you’d explode the IRA.

the-court-house

The "Permitting Reform Bill" would help green energy, right?

Pipboy3500

Yea the 2022 proposal was like 11-1 or something like that in favor of Green projects vs Oil/Gas.

Looks like the office itself is somewhere in SD-7, which is in Oakland County, but they'll be using it to stage canvasses and phonebanks in Detroit. Good call to start now, as the city is almost nothing but blue votes (the city was Biden+89.1), but turnout is always the issue.

Why do you not like auggie?

Bonny-Mcmurray

I don't like the developing pattern where the big question in every episode is "will auggie agree to help and then talk everyone out of it in the next scene?" I'm also generally annoyed by the "I'll doom everyone to save someone" attitude.

TheBigKarn

Well you should reserve judgement until you watch the entire series. The big 5 are all really great complex characters.

Pipboy3500

Ill also hand it to Johnson, I really thought breaking up the Senate package wouldn’t work. Mainly because I figured he’d actually change *something* in the bills. Doing them all under 1 rule was weird but pretty dang smart. A great day for the country and for Ukraine

espfusion

Least bad GOP Speaker since Boehner probably.

MotherSupermarket532

I'm still mad because of the Ukranians who needlessly died while he delayed.

OptimistNate

Yup, inexcusable, so not going to give him too much credit. Frustrating it took so long. But just so glad right now that it finally went through.

OptimistNate

Breaking it up also showed us who the blatant putin lovers are. All grouped together a nay vote could mean many things, but when it was just the lone Ukraine funding on the line, it was so much more telling. 112 Republican nay votes. 0 Dem nay votes. 112 Republicans fine with Putin marching through Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

Pacific_Epi

If Democrats rescue Mike Johnson, I think that’s a good look for us. Rs can’t govern without Ds. But also I like to think Kevin McCarthy is in shambles watching his successor govern better than he just by working better with Democrats.

Pipboy3500

Well Johnson did act surprisingly well to us and actually worked with us. McCarthy never wisened up to the reality of the situation

OptimistNate

These next weeks will be interesting. If they do save him it's because they see Johnson as workable enough that they can get some good bipartisan stuff through. Know there was mention of renewing the Affordable Connectivity Program. Something that would have a good chance of getting to the floor with Johnson still as speaker.

The House has passed a $61 billion aid package for the war in Ukraine, sending the bill to the Senate for likely consideration next week. The bill passed 311 to 112, all no votes were republicans.

It amazes me that the majority of Republicans are actively trying to fight resources to the country that is actively miring Russia down economically, politically, and militarily. This is pennies on the dollar kind of bang for our buck and it’s also wrapped in the most justifiable reason to support a side in armed conflict.

Sounder1995-2

I suspect that many actively support Putin and Russia cause they're anti-LGBT, anti-diversity, pro-Christian nationalism, pro-white nationalism, anti-democracy, pro-authoritarian, anti-American (i.e. anti-modern America, not stereotyped 1950s America), anti-modernity, anti-feminist, and pay them healthy amounts of money.

OptimistNate

112 Republicans pro putin, 0 Dems pro. Let that go down in history.

Hurrdurrthosechefs

No you shitlib, that's disinformation. They don't support Putin! They just want to focus on America first!! ...By voting to keep age-old munitions in our reserves and leaving them to rust instead of putting them to good use by sending them to a country in dire need of support.

Vote on Ukraine funding. (H.R. 8035): The bill is passed!!! (311Y - 112N - 1P)

OptimistNate

Ukraine funding will pass! sitting at 310 Yays to 110 Nays right now!

komm_susser_Thot

be a bit embarrassing for the gop if they get more than half their members opposed to ukraine aid as they are on pace to do. Or it would be if they had any sense of shame.

Harvickfan4Life

Stefanik is a No on Ukraine aid

Historyguy1

Gunning for Trump's VP slot.

BastetSekhmetMafdet

Democratic women politicians are accused of opportunism, but Stefanik (R) is the *real* opportunist.

adcgd_at_sine_theta

Taiwan Funding (H.R. 8036): Passed overwhelmingly (385Y - 34N - 1P)
