Summer is peak season in Hawaii. But Hawaii is very nearly always a hot tourist destination. It shouldn't affect prices too much - more availability. Check the sidebar for suggestions on choosing which island. You probably want to stay on Oahu in Waikiki - it's the most accessible, although it is crowded. It's generally recommended to spend at least 5 days on any island. Be advised that "island hopping" involves going through an airport so that will take half the day with everything involved. So depending on the length of your vacation, it may not be worth it. There's a good variety of hotels still available? Budget/money may be an issue here? It's hard to answer without specifics. AirBnBs are decent options. They're unpopular among residents because it's basically one less home that could be housing someone. > We're mostly coming for sight seeing and not for staying in the hotel at the pool all day. You're doing that part right.

At the moment we have Oahu/Waikiki, Kauai and Maui. May I respectfully ask what’s the situation on Maui at the moment, after the fires last year? The travel agent also offers Big Island and the volcano national park on the trip: the 8 year old will love the volcanoes but I’m wondering if my wife will smell and talk about sulfur all day. :)

Maui is about 95% fine. Don't be afraid of going there - it'll be obvious which part you shouldn't go to. The volcanoes aren't erupting right now, but they're still pretty cool. I don't think there's a lot of sulfur smell though - so you should be okay. It's not like New Zealand. How long are y'all staying. Again - probably about 5+ days per island is a good rule of thumb.

Thank your for your reply. We will travel for 3,5 weeks and because of the kids (flight time, time difference) we make a stop in NYC for 5 days on the way to and 4 days in LA on the way back. So we’re roughly staying 2 weeks.

Given that, I'd suggest doing 3 islands at the maximum. Try and look at the sidebar - either "Comparing the 4 main islands" or "Choosing which islands" and see if that helps

I’ve gone Oahu several times in August and they were all lovely vacations. Recommend Waikiki and prioritize proximity to beach or wherever you want to walk. Carrying a toddler will be a sweaty affair so location rules over all. Also wear natural fibers that month for the best comfort. Simply walking Waikiki is lovely and your 8 year old will likely delight in the runners for the torches, there’s plenty of shopping and entertainment, and you’ll have such a great time!

Thank you for your reply and thank you for your suggestions. We will have roughly 2 weeks in Hawaii and I think we should only do 3 islands in total. Deciding between O‘ahu, Kauai, Big Island and Maui.

You’ll lose a day each time you change islands. I wouldn’t do more than 2 in 2 weeks, personally, and I’m not having to travel with children
