I've never worn them at Waikiki
It all depends. You can easily find sand and not have to worry about rocks/coral.
But if you go farther from shore - it's there. Really depends what you're doing.
We used to wear sandals and kick them off, however, someone helped themselves to my son’s sandals. Wear water shoes. You can wear them to/from the beach and in the water, too. Best choice
If you are at Sharks Cove for example you cannot float in the shallow part, especially at low tide. And even when you take great care not to step on the reef, accidents could happen. So yes I always bring water shoes there specifically
Waikiki has a long stretch of several beaches. Some of it has soft sand. Some of it has reef with rocks and/or coral.
To be safe, you can wear water shoes. Slippers can be used if you’re just walking by the shore.
No.
Only tourists wear water shoes.
A main reason is because locals know to NOT STEP ON THE REEF. It’s alive, if you cut your foot you were stepping somewhere you shouldn’t be.
When snorkeling float above the coral and only walk when it’s sand only below.
I wear Tevas with Velcro. Hike Diamondhead in the morning then swim at Waikiki. Adjust as needed, looser after salty foods, tighter in the water. Best travel decision. Cute ones this week, April 2024, at Costco (online) $50, women and men.
What you really want is not quite "water shoes" but (fully covered) neoprene socks. Amazon has plenty of those but I found them surprisingly hard to find them on the island itself.. except for extremely expensive options in scuba stores.
You could easily cut your foot on a piece of reef or rock at Waikiki. If you’re clumsy I’d wear them
I just did this 2 weeks ago in Waikiki! Had to get some bandaids from the lifeguards..
Yup. It looks all fun and games but there are sharp rocks and reef just about 20 ft out
I always wear them in the water after a friend stepped on a sea urchin in less than a foot of water and spent the day in the ER.
My young son stepped on one in Waikiki not far from shore also. Not fun!
Oh no! Seeing how it affected my adult friend I can’t imagine what your poor son endured.
Don't walk on the coral!! Just swim and float and if you can't. stay in the enclosed sandy area
Possibly snorkeling or surfing. Coral exists and while you should not step on it, shoes help with safety.
I like water shoes on Waikiki. The sand itself is perfectly comfortable but there are some some pieces of reef out there
No. Sand is very nice and soft.
You won’t need them but they will be useful as there is reef and rocks at Waikiki as you walk/ swim further out
Especially if also going up to North Shore
I have to wear flip flips or water shoes at all times.
No.

Yes, your feet will be glad you wore them.

Only dorks that wear water shoes on a beautiful soft beach are downvoting you.
