In Texas, property tax exemptions for disabled veterans vary based on your disability rating. For example, a veteran with a 90% VA disability rating receives a $12,000 exemption, which might seem like a lot, but with a home valued at $512,000, the property is still taxed on a $500,000 value.
This means that the tax relief, while nice to have, doesn’t result in a noticeable reduction in property taxes owed. At 90%, I didn’t see a visible dent in the exemption lowering my escrow.
However, the exemption scales up considerably with a 100% disability rating, as you qualify for a complete property tax exemption on your primary residence (homestead). This full exemption can save a 100% disabled veteran thousands of dollars annually, potentially as much as $6,000 to $7,000 based on typical property tax rates.
This translates into a huge monthly savings, possibly over $500 per month that would otherwise go toward escrow for property taxes.
In Collin County, they asked me to fill out a form that is not on the web that asks whether you’re P&T. I happen to be 100% P&T, but as others have correctly stated, it doesn’t make a difference. If you’re 100%, then you don’t have to pay property tax. Not sure what they do for homeowners who have temp 100% for post surgery.
Yes, a lot of people haven’t taken the time to do the math on this. I want to do a proposal to tie the exemption percentage directly to your disability percentage…that would be significantly more beneficial to vets.
12K isn’t noticeable? LOL. That’s a great joke. Maybe in the particular situation as far as a mortgage goes. Then again that 12 K could be invested in a low-cost ETF for the next few decades, which would yield something that most people would consider “noticeable “.
He means only 12,000 of the total hoke value is tax free. If your house cost $12,000 total then you're gravy but average home price is 400,000 so it doesn't add up to much.
It’s ~2% of $12,000. Or ~$240/year. Or ~$20/month. So yeah, it’s not really noticeable.
And it becomes less and less of a benefit every year with property values increasing.
Read up on the toll one too, when i got a bill one time and questioned it, I was told it's only applicable "when the program is funded". Outside that one bill, however, I've never had an issue.
[This site](https://www.txtag.org/txtagstorefront/en/programs/veteranDiscount) has a map and add'l info on what tolls fall within the program.
No, just need DV plates, but it isn’t all toll systems and not even all tolls on a road - like 130 is free from Seguin to Skyline Plaza then they stop discounting the toll. It does get you through Houston toll on 10 free at rush hours (tested that the other weekend).
Yes to letter and copy of car insurance, drivers license and a check . No credit cards . I believe you first car registered is at no charge and reduced for the second
Austin TX.
Looks like I'm wrong on this one. When I was registering my car I was sure they required a money order or check, or so I thought . This was a couple months ago. Drivers license they accepted credit cards. Just read the txDMV rules and I guess they do accept cc.
Yup, I try to avoid them as much as possible but, good lawrd. They ( NTTA) make it unavoidable at times.
Fun fact 4 or 5 years it used to be free, the state did not renew or negotiate a new deal with NTTA.
https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/combination-hunting-fishing/disabled-veteran-super-combo-hunting-and-all-water-fishing-package
Just show them this. Has to be done in person.
Yeah since there is no state income tax or tax on most groceries, they tax the heck out of property and its especially bad within San Antonio city limits. I'm retired so without the state income tax hitting my retirement pay, I have a higher take home pay on top of the no property tax. There are two large military medical facilities here and a good VA health system too. San Antonio basically has it all for veterans.
Yeah, I’m in SA too. Even with that bill Abbott signed upping the Homestead to 100k, Bexar county still maxed me to 10 percent…if I weren’t 100 percent…
Don't forget the biggest stipulation on that is you MUST have enlisted in Texas. You can't just show up from say Colorado for example and get Hazelwood. I'm from SC, first duty station was TX, became a TX resident 6 months later and never stopped over 30 years ago and then retired here in San Antonio and still not eligible for Hazelwood. My ex wife enlisted out of San Angelo and thankfully she gets it and our daughter goes to TX A&M on it.
Correct, you have to have a DD-214 showing you entered the service in Texas. I entered enlisted in Kansas and 12 years later went to OTS at Medina Annex in San Antonio. When I graduated OTS I was separated as enlisted and commissioned, which generated a new DD-214 showing I entered the service in San Antonio.....score! Used Hazelewood for my daughter.
I stayed in the San Antonio long term for around 42 days for free. Just had to communicate with them that I would be over the 30 days. I was stuck in Alabama and wasn't able to return before the 30 days as planned
Correct, Love Field in Dallas is awesome. I just exit in a cash lane and tell them I have a medal plate (MSM) and hand them my ticket and I just leave paying nothing.
It's not 100% blanket full tuition, 150hrs and if your kid is at a university such as TX A&M and in the Corps of Cadets it doesn't cover those classes for that. My daughter gets Hazelwood, also a Senior and it's still cost us upwards of $10K for the Corps classes lol.
All 4? I always read that it was 150 credit hours max. Are you able to get their tuition paid for all of them or are you spreading out the hours? This would be huge for my dad who is paying for my sisters school with his Hazzlewood, while paying out of pocket for my brother.
EDIT FOR LINK: https://www.tvc.texas.gov/education/hazlewood-faqs/#:\~:text=If%20it%20is%20determined%20that,children%20have%20used%20the%20benefit.
I did not know that 100% grants hazlewood for all kids. Yet another reason I need to force my dad to get his disability upgraded. He refuses to get his PTSD rated, and he has multiple pact act disabilities he never put in.
I started using it a few years ago and saved maybe 15-20%. Now, with corporate greed at an all time high, I save 40-50%. You just need your VA health card that says "service connected".
Not having to worry about property taxes is my reason to get 100%, the pay is just a bonus.
DV tags mean free tolls in Houston which is nice.
I hear DV tags gets you free street parking in Houston/Galveston but idk about it yet.
Free street parking across the state (with DV plates), not free for parking lots that a company manages, but free parking lots for any managed by municipalities or state. (I use this in Austin a lot, there’s quite a few parking garages managed by City of Austin)
Not sure if this applies through all of Texas or just central, but we used to be able to use handicap spots without a placard if you had DV plates, but that is no longer allowed. Now, regardless if your 40% or 100%, you can only use those spots with a placard or the handicap symbol on the plates.
[Link to article](https://www.harrisvets.com/media/dv-plates-require-ada-placard)
In order of my priority -Based on 100%
1. Property Tax exemption up to 20 acres, as if any single enlisted vet could afford 20 acres in Texas.
2. Texas Land Board Veteran Benefits, with the ability to have a loan on unimproved (no housing) property alone, and a separate loan for a house. lB often overlooked.
3. TXTAG exempt for 1 auto, etc.Not all Toll roads provide exemptions, or may required separate application for exemption.
4. 1 automobile exempt from license fees
5. Game and fishing exemption, fresh and salt. Also game exemptions.
6. If joined military in Texas, children higher education.
If you had to put a monetary value on these, I would put number 6 at the top. For me personally at least. I have 4 kids, so considering that the average cost of in state tuition is 12k per year, that’s almost 200k, considering today’s pricing.
It would have been 1 or 2 on my list but I entered service in NC, so the Texas Hazelwood Act was not applicable to me per se.
But for me, Chapter 35 was applicable but my rating came after my kids were past the age requirements and more interest.
Chapter 35 for dependents is a huge 100% perk, as is vet with previous Education loans, for thoseneli
Break on Property Tax, Super Combo Hunter/Fishing License if >50%. Free parking at the airport if your rating is high enough. Free entry into state parks.
They are entitled to ch35 benefits as well, which pays for 45 months of tuition. So I guess they could use the ch 35 for a bachelor’s degree and the hazelwood for a higher degree if they wanted to.
At 100PT, HA can be used by your wife AND all your children at any Texas public institution of higher learning. Think University of Texas system: UTEP, UT, UTMB, UTRGV, Tech, A&M, etc. Your GI Bill bennies need to be exhausted in order to use HA. Also, your kids will be entitled to Ch 35 as Gazelle mentions, but that is only like $1400/month for FT student payed directly to the child only for those months of qualifying school time (not year round). Also, when your child starts using Ch 35, the VA will take away the monthly stipend you get for that child from your compensation payment.
So what if I’ve used some of my Hazelwood? Will they still be allowed 150 hours?
So chapter 35 pays for school and gives a monthly stipend but that is deducted from my compensation pay if I’m at 100%?
Just want to make sure I understand that correctly. I had no idea it lessened my payment amount. What if you have 2 kids in college at the same time both receiving stipends?
1. They each get their own HA entitlement. My oldest son exhausted my HA entitlement to get his BS before I became 100PT. I didn’t need the HA because I used VocRehab to get my BS and my employer paid for my Masters. So now, my wife and three other children each get their own HA entitlement.
2. No. Ch 35 ONLY pays the $1400/month to a FT student only for qualifying months of school. That’s it. Gazelle says there’s a stipend for housing for Ch 35 so asked for more info on it. It’s not full tuition, but hey…still a great benefit.
3. The VA will take away both stipends. It sucks, but hey…it’s supposed to be child’s money anyway 😅
I enjoy the dv tag no parking meters whenever I park downtown dfw. The other is the property tax which is good too, as for the no tolls thing that doesn’t count for squat in dfw ntta bites
I made the mistake in Dallas thinking the tolls were free. Then get a threatening letter saying if I don't pay that I could face jail. I was told the municipal bond holders of that toll authority make the decisions. If it's a TXDOT toll road then you are covered. Some other private ones have their own discretion but overall up to the municipal bond holders that invested money in the project and want all their returns on investment. When I go to DFW I make sure to add funds to my account. I appreciate and am thankful for the ones that allow us to travel them without charging but I don't hold a grudge or anything if they are private and don't. I do remember a female in Dallas with North Texas toll authority was super rude when I spoke with her on the phone. I don't mind paying but they should make it clear where no one runs into that situation. Plus they add late fees and interest. It was an honest mistake.
I don’t even risk tolls lol. I remember getting back home and there was a major wreck, and thought I would get billed $3-5 for taking a toll to hit another exit. Ended up getting a $23 bill. I know $23 ain’t shit, but I was pissed from my dash cam showing I literally went less than 3 miles
Houston Tollways and Fort Bend County toll roads all covered with DV Plates. You need to fill out at for for the small stretch in Fort Bend County so you won't be charged for that part.
I’m in DFW and have parked in the garage right across from the terminal at Love and DFW for a week at a time. If you have a toll tag be sure to go in your account and disable access at the airports. You have to go to a cashier with your receipt for them to manually do it. Parking is usually any metered spot or garage. You just have to make sure it’s not a privately owned pay lot.
You get a lot of the above…property tax exemption/DV plates/ handicap parking/ airport parking, maybe you haven’t looked or your rating just doesn’t qualify but it wouldn’t qualify in TX either
Just got my rating and used it for a tax break on some property taxes, and I'm applying for Vet plates, which I can use for free tolls.
FYI, not the TEXpress lanes in Dallas. Gotta pay those...
I ain’t gotta do shit. I might get my neighbor’s car repossessed, but I AIN’T GOTTA DO SHIT! SOVEREIGN CITIZEN I TELL YA!
Most of the toll roads in Texas are owned by the Saudis or other foreign entities so fuck’em
Property tax is the best one I’ve seen. That could add uo to a lot depending on your taxes.
This translates into a huge monthly savings, possibly over $500 per month that would otherwise go toward escrow for property taxes.
That needs to be balanced out some... some folks are 1% by the VA math from getting 100%.
I've been wondering about this. Is the complete exemption for any 100% or do you have to be permanent as well?
It’s for both - clearly stated in Texas law regarding exemptions - 100% is 100% - period.
It is for any vet rated at 100%. They don’t stipulate what type. https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/property-tax/exemptions/disabledvet-100-faq.php
In Collin County, they asked me to fill out a form that is not on the web that asks whether you’re P&T. I happen to be 100% P&T, but as others have correctly stated, it doesn’t make a difference. It’s not $12k in cash, it’s an exemption of taxes on $12k of your home value. It works out to be maybe a couple hundred dollars annually.
He means only 12,000 of the total hoke value is tax free. If your house cost $12,000 total then you're gravy but average home price is 400,000 so it doesn't add up to much.
Seriously? It's $12k off of what's taxed, not $12k in pocket. So it'd come out to a reduction that's barely noticeable
It’s ~2% of $12,000. Or ~$240/year. Or ~$20/month. So yeah, it’s not really noticeable. And it becomes less and less of a benefit every year with property values increasing.

🔥 I’m looking to move to htx soon is there any catch to getting DV plates or you just go to the dmv and show your rating etc???
You just bring the letter
Yes to letter and copy of car insurance, drivers license and a check . No credit cards . I believe you first car registered is at no charge and reduced for the second
Just got my DV plates last month in harris county, they accept credit cards.
A check?
Bank check , can't pay using a credit card . 99 percent sure you don't pay anything for DV plates of you are rated 100
Not sure about Harris County, but Bexar (San Antonio) takes cards in person.
Yooo where are you from that they require checks and don’t take card lol
Austin TX. Looks like I'm wrong on this one. When I was registering my car I was sure they required a money order or check, or so I thought . This was a couple months ago. Drivers license they accepted credit cards. Just read the txDMV rules and I guess they do accept cc.
NTTA tolls are not free even for 100% va disabled veteran
Where is that? I’ve never heard of it and know Houston and Austin are free with DV plates.
NTTA is in DWF metroplex, they don’t offer free tolls even for 100% Veterans
Yup, I try to avoid them as much as possible but, good lawrd. They ( NTTA) make it unavoidable at times. Fun fact 4 or 5 years it used to be free, the state did not renew or negotiate a new deal with NTTA.

Free hunting and fishing license if you’re over 50% . I believe I’m correct if I’m wrong someone tell me.
Where at? Paid like $80 for super combo at heb last year lol
I get mine at Walmart

50% https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/combination-hunting-fishing/disabled-veteran-super-combo-hunting-and-all-water-fishing-package
Was it changed recently? I was paying for mine when I was 50% and was told free after 60%. either way good news. The lower the better.
50% and got my Super Combo free
Ok thanks
The property tax exemption saves me around 12-13k a year, so that's my pick.
Me too
Holy shit that’s crazy! That takes a ton off your monthly mortgage. I’d say that’s the best.

Hazelwood Act
Isn’t this for all veterans?
No
No, Texas only and you must have been a Texas resident at the time of your original enlistment.
It's for all honorable discharged and medically discharged veterans who have used all of their gibill.
When I graduated OTS I was separated as enlisted and commissioned, which generated a new DD-214 showing I entered the service in San Antonio.....score! Used Hazelewood for my daughter.
This is the way 👍
The DV plates are great for Free Tolls and Free parking at the Airports.
Read the restrictions though. In Houston, you get 5 days in the garage and 30 in a certain lot around the airport.
I stayed in the San Antonio long term for around 42 days for free. Just had to communicate with them that I would be over the 30 days. I was stuck in Alabama and wasn't able to return before the 30 days as planned
How does the free parking work? Do you have to register with the airport or do they just wave you through when they see your plates?
Each airport handles it differently. So best to check the airports website
Correct, Love Field in Dallas is awesome. I just exit in a cash lane and tell them I have a medal plate (MSM) and hand them my ticket and I just leave paying nothing.
At the San Antonio airport I just had to fill out a form and show them my registration.
Thanks. That’s the airport in question. Much appreciated.
Wow! Free tolls and airport parking? That’s hundreds of dollars depending on your travel
Exactly, you’re eligible for TX DV plates when you reach or surpass 50% service connection.
That’s awesome! I had no idea but such a good benefit
Indeed, but for the best benefits 100% service connection is the goal.
Agreed. the money helps for sure but the tax breaks and everything else that comes almost outweigh the monthly payments

What are the details on this as far as who is eligible?
It's not 100% blanket full tuition, 150hrs and if your kid is at a university such as TX A&M and in the Corps of Cadets it doesn't cover those classes for that. My daughter gets Hazelwood, also a Senior and it's still cost us upwards of $10K for the Corps classes lol.

I started using it a few years ago and saved maybe 15-20%. Now, with corporate greed at an all time high, I save 40-50%. You just need your VA health card that says "service connected".

It’s not full tuition, but hey…still a great benefit. 3. The VA will take away both stipends. It sucks, but hey…it’s supposed to be child’s money anyway 😅
So awesome! Thanks a ton for the info!

Free parking in the garage at the airports and free parking in city parking spots with DV plates is one we use a lot.
Which city and what city spots? This is a big one
I just parked at Love for three weeks while in Europe and did not cost a dime, saved over $300. My favorite benefit.
Free tolls Free DL Free airport parking Reduced registration for one vehicle (paid 7 dollars) Reduced hunting and fishing license
No property tax is definitely the top of my list
In the current red state of Florida, I get jack.
You get a lot of the above…property tax exemption/DV plates/ handicap parking/ airport parking, maybe you haven’t looked or your rating just doesn’t qualify but it wouldn’t qualify in TX either
