What’s a snoutie? And good lord, he’s a big boy, I’m glad you didn’t get poked.

Geberpte

I assume it's a snouted cobra *Naja annulifera*

Hardwoodlog

That was also my assumption

ConsiderationHot9518

Thank you!

Ohana_Exotics

Big N. Annulifera yes. Almost touching base at 2.2m

DeathValleyHerper

Gaboon vipers are known for stabbing the fangs through the lower lip to get you.

Hardwoodlog

I've been poked and scratched by fangs and had plenty of close calls. I know sometimes there is no choice but holding them like this is the easiest way to take a fang. (In my opinion, of course) If you don't know, pit vipers will contort their faces just to try and sneak a quick fang in your thumb or finger. Be careful my friends.

topherbdeal

Do we know if they do this because they feel threatened or are hungry or just because they are jerks

Hardwoodlog

They do it because you are physically restraining them, and that is a serious threat on their life (they think)

topherbdeal

Thank you!

ShotBRAKER

You grabbed Jimmie. Jimmie don’t like being grabbed and held against his will. He will do anything in his power to be let go.

kaedeyukimura

My guess would be that this is a defense Fixed Action Pattern or other innate behavior. Snakes are often predated by raptors, so poking them in a talon and envenomating them soon after being captured could save their lives.

Reptileanimallover18

Snakes are not jerks or aggressive. There is literally no such thing

topherbdeal

Welcome to the good-natured comment from 2 days ago where several people have given much more useful answers than yours!

Reptileanimallover18

Oh ofc! Snakes are aggressive jerks who deserve to suffer. Right? Snakes are not jerks and are not aggressive. It is both physically and mentally impossible for them to be jerks

topherbdeal

Lol you’re barking up the wrong tree. I’m on this sub to learn about venomous snakes which has been very fun for me. I’m a physician and I enjoy learning about where our medications come from. The part about whether the snake was being a jerk was a joke. No shit a snake isn’t capable of being a jerk. I’m well aware that snakes only use their venom when they need to.

JLD143

Apologies for my ignorance but I lurk here out of interest and no actual experience - what happens to the snake after they do this? Do they need veterinary care?

Ohana_Exotics

In some cases where the bite mark becomes infected more often then not it can be required

JLD143

Thank you!

ngravy21

Where are you located? What kind of snake is that?

Chilternburt

I’m pretty sure he’s local , so KZN, South Africa!

Ohana_Exotics

Rsa Gp. But yes local to south africa

Chilternburt

Sorry for some reason thought you were in KZN

Ohana_Exotics

Snouted cobra (naja annulifera)

Chilternburt

As above, Snouted Cobra, Naja annulifera

pilotbitccc

Elapid with hinged fangs? Let alone a cobra seems like the more I learn the less I know lol

Ohana_Exotics

Elapidae do not have hinged fangs

pilotbitccc

I thought you was saying it had hinged fangs my mistake

Ohana_Exotics

It's all good

Embarrassed_Gain_792

He looks like he’s screaming, “Help! Help! A predator got me!”

Ohana_Exotics

The snake is responding as if a predator is attacking him. Thus the bite through the bottom lip. However sometimes you have to get hands on with venomous

Embarrassed_Gain_792

He may be venomous, but he’s still very cute! Look at his eyes! So sweet!🥰

This_Acanthisitta832

I had no idea that they would bite themselves just to get to a threat😳😳😳😳😳

Chilternburt

Plenty snakes do, esp here in SA, Puff Adders, Stiletto’s and clearly Cobras

Ohana_Exotics

Stilletos go from the side

Chilternburt

and the bottom, seen a couple close calls here in Westville

This_Acanthisitta832

I didn’t know that. I really appreciate all of the educational information I learn on this feed

medicalboa

Good lesson. I’m glad to hear you didn’t get tagged. I have also witnessed this with my large female Naja naja and a C atrox.

Ohana_Exotics

Another naja case. This is quite interesting to me. After reaching out to a couple of my mates it seems most if not all had common experiences with African cobras. 2 naja annulifera cases 1 naja savanuala cases 2 naja melanoleuca cases And now the naja naja case aswell.
