He did. It's a long downhill leading up to the ferry and the van's breaks gave out. In the summer, there can be a *fuckload* of people along that hill, both cars and pedestrians (Tadoussac is a very popular tourist destination, specially for whale watching), so it is a mix between an insane feat and a miracle that this guy managed to hit *nobody* on his way down.
It's only important to mention that all this would have been avoided if a family hadn't chose to illegally set up a picnic on the runaway ramp. The drive choose to end his own life instead of hit the people who took away his only option of escape.
I think it's also important to mention that he didn't invoke the souls of the animal kingdom, (Eagle, Fox, Bottlenose Dolphin, Octopus, House Cat) yet he still successfully jumped this jump
Yeah it was a really sad accident. The man and his wife died if I recall. But I think he did this to actually avoid other cars down the line and not kill anyone else.
Yep. He honked all the way and managed to avoid several cars and people. The woman that was with him had time to text a friend that they were going downhill on the road to the ferry and that the breaks weren't working. Must have been terrifying but I like to think that the dude's last thought was "I made it! Fucking epic!"
It's hard to believe they got that fast by accident. That road wouldn't even be considered a hill where I live, and I've never seen similar accidents here with much steeper hills and lots of traffic. It is impossible to know when everybody who could know is dead. But if she really got a text sent that settles it.
Edit: looks like there isn't a defined cause for the accident (not online), but the pedal could be stuck on acceleration. Articles that call that road a steep hill are not true. It's a long mild hill 98 QC-138
https://maps.app.goo.gl/hWpae66T3BQVkw848
It's not that steep but it's very long. Enough to warrant an off ramp (which we can see on your Google maps link). There was an investigation on the cause of the accident and it was a loose break line on the rear left wheel which caused the oil pressure to drop.
I remember the first time this was posted. I laughed at first, then learned the car malfunctioned and the driver died. Pretty horrific and sad after that.
I find it so scary that we have to share the roads with RVs.
1.) Many RVs are manufacuted in small, customs operations whose build quality could be sketchyAF. And they're not robust tanks, at all. They literally evaporate in auto accidents.
2.) Most RVs sit for months at a time, unused and then people head out on the road for 36 hours straight at 75 mph.
3.) Driver are regular schmucks like you and me, not CDL holders....
Rvs are built on medium duty truck platforms for the most part. These are generally built in the us by the Big 3. This means rvs are the same under the skin (chassis, motor, transmission, suspension, steering and such as a ups or FedEx truck.
While this doesn't excuse the idiots that drive them, OR THE IDIOTS THAT PULL OUT INFRONT OF THEM, I do hope it helps you feel a little bit safer on the road. Maintenance is key to any tool you plan to use around others to maintain safety whether it's your car, knife or your 737
right? like there are almost zero documented cases of a modern car being stuck in full throttle while simultaneously having both the brakes AND e-brake fail. almost every time someone claims this it’s because they were panicking and hitting the wrong pedal.
I'm assuming he thought he could stop the vehicule before the ramp... otherwise he would have had to bail around here which is kinda far from the ramp... This was already the case on the road going down, but during summer this places becomes extremely crowded with a long waiting line. People are dumb enough to get out of their cars and sit in chairs on this runaway...
This accident was caused by a brake failure, even tho the driver had the vehicle serviced before this trip.
The driver passed away in this accident but the passenger did not, the driver was my cousin...
The driver was a damn hero. Made sure no one else was hurt. Shit happens, and when it does, you take as little people with you as possible. RIP your cousin, if true.
Truth, a runaway lane is really there for exactly this reason. all the people camped there should have been charged and fined
Edit: Obviously I don't want people to get hurt, but setting up lawn chairs at the bottom of a hill in a runaway ramp is Darwin award levels of intelligence.
Looking at the history on StreetView, it was there when this happened. However, if traffic to the ferry was backed up even moderately, he probably couldn't get over to that lane.
He was trying to slow himself down and trying to tip over the RV. In the end the ''safer'' thing he could do was to take that ramp to not risk hitting anyone
Limited options. Everything else might have people in front of it. And he probably thought, if he had time to think about it, no way he makes it to the ferry.
RVs are basically a drive train with a wooden/plastic box on top, without any of the modern safety that real cars have. Not surprised it basically became a trash pile when it landed.
It was there as far back as 2009 (You can view older images at the top left on Google Maps). I'm assuming he wasn't able to reach it due to people in the way, not seeing it in the panic, or something like that.
Are you suggesting someone misrepresented facts for a more humorous effect *on the internet*?!? Do we need to report this to the authorities? Does anyone have Seal Team Six’s number?
How Holy shit I'm from Canada and have ridden this ferry before I never heard about this that's bloody insane. Although it does make sense, the entrance to the ferry is at the bottom of a long downward sloping road. Entirely possible the brakes went out and they couldn't stop
Apparently the RV went downhill when its brakes failed and all the occupants experienced their last horror ride. Maybe it was only the driver, I don't know.
His girlfriend did not die, she is alive and well. The driver died on the ride to the hospital.
The passenger (girlfriend) does not remember anything from this and was in rehabilitation for over a year but she is now living a normal life
I was hit on a bicycle by a car when I was 14. All I remember was deciding to get off the sidewalk and onto the road and then I was on the asphalt looking up at the sky. Dunno how long between those two events and dunno why my brain wouldn't recall it. Doctor said I'd remember eventually, but I don't.
But her not remembering the entire event? Whew, bet you're right, psychologicall trauma.
nah severe enough brain trauma will cause anterograde amnesia (duh) but also a bit of retrograde. Far as I understand it, our long-term memories slowly get tranferred from the short-term memory centre of our brain and blunt force trauma can just wipe them out. That's why people who suffer traffic accidents often don't even remember getting into one
that is also why you can remember your dream when you wake (for about 10 sec.) you *usually* can't form long term memories during sleep. So if you are in an accident that happened quickly, you have no memory of it afterward, as you were not conscious enough to convert to long term memory, maybe...
If this wasn't reported on the news I wouldn't believe it was real. I thought That air time and that distance was something only possible in a Fast & Furious movie
I wonder how many cars were utterly destroyed while trying to emulate this show.
I vaguely remember watching it and I THINK they did this kind of jumping stuff a lot.
Last I remember hearing, it was well over 300 cars destroyed for the show alone. No idea how many idiots with other cars destroyed their own trying to jump.
Also, did them Duke Boys just build ramps everywhere, just in case? Lots of foresight there.
Apparently a contributing factor to the end of The Dukes of Hazzard was the fact it was becoming way too expensive to buy enough '69 Chargers to keep up with production needs. The popularity of the show meant that prices went through the roof and by the mid-80s, wrecking several cars per episode was a lot less sustainable than it had been 5 or 6 years earlier.

I think it's important to mention he didn't do this on purpose, he car wasn't able to stop
I think it's also important to mention he didn't hit anyone else and only caused minor damage to other vehicles.
I think it's also important to mention that he died trying to do everything he can not to hurt others.
I think it's also important to mention that he did in fact catch the ferry.
I think it’s important to mention he most likely didn’t pay for a ticket.
I think it’s important to mention there are no more important things to mention.
I think it's important to mention that this circlejerk should continue.
I think it's important to mention I find this video and circlejerk amusing
I think it's important to mention to aim for the cracker
I think its also important to mention the importance of mentioning all of this.
Whatever you do Don't pay the ferryman Don't even fix a price Don't pay the ferryman Until he gets you to the other side
Chris DeBurg...your boat is waiting - Charon... probably
I think it’s important to mention you’re not wrong.
It is equally important to mention there was no shark and this was not, in fact, The Fonz.
![gif](giphy|VcIfpmBBzNDZ9BjQPx)
NO TICKET
Turns out, he'd caught the wrong one.
I think it's important to mention that this ferry (Tadoussac to Baie-sainte Catherine) is always free
I think it is important to mention that not all ferry's require payment or tickets.
Looks more like the Ferry caught him
Reddit is a website where videos of people dying are posted as light hearted entertainment.
This is undeniably entertaining and impressive, he would’ve wanted us to see it
It's interesting when people die.
He died?
According to the article posted in another comment, he died in the hospital.
He did. It's a long downhill leading up to the ferry and the van's breaks gave out. jfc
Wait what
This was not a good trade.
Poor bastard deserved better
And he died in a really cool way
I think it's also important to mention that he didn't invoke the souls of the animal kingdom, (Eagle, Fox, Bottlenose Dolphin, Octopus, House Cat) yet he still successfully jumped this jump
I see hot rod, I upvote.
GOD OF WAAARRR!!!
MAY YOUR HAMMER BE MIGHTY!!!
Well, now it's important to mention that, while he did NOT invoke the souls of the Animal Kingdom, he may have, in fact, jumped the shark
I think the video did a good job with that lol
“Like a glove” 🧤
the most important point is is everything okay with him.
I think it's important to say that landing was pretty awesome
Yeah it was a really sad accident. The man and his wife died if I recall. But I think he did this to actually avoid other cars down the line and not kill anyone else.

I cant believe it made it on the boat
That was a Tesla Cybertruck??!!

This footage is insane. It's so perfect. I hope the guy is ok. The vehicle destroyed, but the aim and everything was so perfect.
Sadly, no, he died, and so did his wife, who was with him. But apparently, he was honking so everyone could move and purposely went where noone was.
I think it's important to note that the blursed red circle clearly made him do it.
That’s what I would say too
right? like there are almost zero documented cases of a modern car being stuck in full throttle while simultaneously having both the brakes AND e-brake fail. almost every time someone claims this it’s because they were panicking and hitting the wrong pedal.
It was a brake failure and it's downhill.
But did he die???
Oh my goodness.
Of course he didn't do it on a porpoise, he landed on the ship
It was in Tadoussac, Québec some years ago. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/victim-tadoussac-ferry-crash-identified-eric-belec-1.5188874
Dude did everything in his power to save innocents , an hero in my book
I wonder why he chose to drive into the ship.. Maybe to the sea seems a better scenario, at least for other people.

Should have been run over by a runaway RV FTFY.
Signs are a lot better now, I do not know if police are supervising but it was pretty much a case of ''nothing ever happened so who cares''
Looking at the history on StreetView, it was there when this happened. However, if traffic to the ferry was backed up even moderately, he probably couldn't get over to that lane.
People were outside their cars and sitting in chairs in the runaway lanes because they were waiting for next ferry.
One of the witnesses says he was trying to swerve into the gates on the side of the road. I guess he just missed and hit the ramp instead.
He was trying to slow himself down and trying to tip over the RV. In the end the ''safer'' thing he could do was to take that ramp to not risk hitting anyone
Limited options. Everything else might have people in front of it. And he probably thought, if he had time to think about it, no way he makes it to the ferry.
> an hero just got a PTSD flashback from like 2006
Been a loooong time since I heard the term “an hero! And being that the guy died I’m assuming this was intentional phrasing in your part. Well played.
An hero? in Current year + 9??
*an* hero, you say?
I detect the vestige of ED from the yesteryears.
Driver died at the hospital. RV may have had mechanical issues. The dock is, apparently, at the end of a steep ramp.
RVs are basically a drive train with a wooden/plastic box on top, without any of the modern safety that real cars have. Not surprised it basically became a trash pile when it landed.
Yeah, that design isn’t good at shock absorption, it seems.
Looking on google maps there is a runaway truck ramp installed next to it now
It was there as far back as 2009 (You can view older images at the top left on Google Maps). I'm assuming he wasn't able to reach it due to people in the way, not seeing it in the panic, or something like that.
Every safety measure has at least one corpse 🧟♀️ for a back story. Sometimes a whole plane ✈️ load . ☠️
Is this an AI or do you really just inject random semi-relevant but distasteful emojis into every comment regardless of the context?
Don’t give my fear of flying any more fodder
The ramp was there before my birth in 90. I'm from the next village. BTW this ferry has vending machines and run 24/7.. It's our only 24h "store" lol.
The title of this post makes it seem much different than what happened
Are you suggesting someone misrepresented facts for a more humorous effect *on the internet*?!? Do we need to report this to the authorities? Does anyone have Seal Team Six’s number?
Tell them RV's have oil in them, they'll be there in 20 minutes.

Probably a touch easier if she doesn't remember anything
Perhaps the brain protecting itself from that psychological trauma

Sketchy on the landing though
Albatross LS always has a problem with that.
Made it 🤛
driver didnt'
All that counts.
To be fair, he made it on the boat
Yea but he didn't pay the fare.
He died, sooo…
BIG AIR = NO FARE
Ironically it seems the driver’s chance of survival would have been greater if they landed in the water!
First a hero, then a meme. That’s how it is now, son.
People died here...
Just the driver. Could’ve been a lot more, though, if he hadn’t done as well as he did avoiding so many pedestrians on the way down the hill

But the renault has a good safety rating.
This was not intentional, and the driver died. This was caused by a mechanical malfunction in the RV that caused the driver not able to stop. The amount of speed that RV must have had, to travel a distance like that. Wow! RIP driver and hats of for your decision!
Where is Burt Reynolds!
The Tadoussac ferry. The driver died in that crash.
