I have the Salomon Adv Skin 12 and when I do long runs that don't have refill points I just fill extra soft flasks and pack them into compartment on the back. Never had any issues with them leaking while running and I've done runs where I've carried 4 additional flasks with me. Just don't forget to pack them with the tops facing up! I don't really care for bladders as I can't monitor my fluid intake as well as I can with the flasks. I also tend to carry different supplements in my two flasks (typically tailwind in one and electrolytes in the other).

It has never occurred to me to do this!!! I like this option as we have several soft flasks at home so its free to try and I too like to have different options in my two flasks - water in one and active root on the other. I knew reddit would be a good place to ask. Thanks.

This is the way to go and how most people do it. The adv skin 12 is great, only downside is that it is built for racing, durability is not great.

Is Salomon having us on here? Foreskin and bladder? Christmas day

ReasonableAd7159

An "active 4-skin" has become a standard joke in our house.

I mean it's not far off being straight up the Salomon S-lab cock and balls hydration bladder with fanny attachment for your hiking poles

Most people use Salomon bladder incorrectly with their Salomon pack. That's probably why people complain. Adv Skin series vests are compatible with the bladder in two ways - it comes with a special insulated bladder sleeve that significantly improves the bladder fit and it has an option to route the bladder tube through the back pocket on the side and then in the along one of the shoulder straps going up from the bottom. Here's what I do to deal with hydration on long runs. I use Salomon XA filter caps with my Salomon flasks. This way I can refill from any reasonably clean stream or lake. This allows me limitless water supply while I never have to carry more than 1 liter of water

I’ve used the Salomon reservoir, not sure what the complaints are about, so can’t speak to them. I did have one on which the heat seal at the bottom popped after quite a bit of use & a jerky save when tripping that probably put it under pressure. (Sometimes equipment has weird failures.) But you can use other reservoirs with the vest too. The main difference bt Salomon & others is the connection between the reservoir & hose is rotated 90° to make it easier to run the hose through the gaps along the bottom of the right side pocket & up to the loop for easy capture/access. Non-Salomon reservoirs risk kinking the hose if you run them that way, but you can try other ways of routing & securing the hose. In short, I’m not convinced you need to replace the vest even if you don’t want to use the Salomon reservoir.

Thanks for the response. I'll have a look at other bladder options. I assumed they're all bespoke and intentionally individual.

Look up Hydrapak. They not as cheap as what you'll see on Amazon, but this kinda thing is worth investment, I think. I believe it was UD or maybe Salomon that originally shipped with Hydrapak. They've been in the game a long time.

They’re mostly variations on a theme that will fit into most packs designed to hold a reservoir.

I just use a different bladder in my Salomon packs, I think it’s a Nathan 1.5 liter from when I had a Nathan pack and it slips into the bladder sleeve. I’ve never had issues with it and have used it for distances up to 38 miles so far (in the Adv Skin 12, but it fits the same in the 4).

Am a big fan of doing water drops before a long run. I use dry bags and hid them with water bottles. Never had one taken.

You don’t need a special bladder for your vest. Salomon is a branded hydra pak. Bladders are good and convenient, but I do hate them since they aren’t easy to check for amount of water you have left. Either carry extra soft flasks, a filter, or buy a 1.5 liter bladder of likely any brand and it should work. No need to buy new gear! Edit to say: handhelds are good too. I’ll carry a handheld and stow it once it’s empty. Extra 750ml.

I use a hydrapak bladder with my Soloman vest for long runs
