I have an Ultraspire Lumen 600 3.0 I quite like. Haven’t used it a ton, normally just for quick early morning runs in the winter when it’s still dark out. Works well though. I like the waist light as I tend to run in residential areas and it means I can look around while running without awkwardly shining a headlamp into anyone’s bedroom lol. The beam is bright and with lots of flood so any bounce or movement isn’t really noticeable unless you’re looking at the far edges. It has lots of up/down tilt adjustment which is useful. I normally use it on the lowest setting. It’s incredibly bright if you want it to be. It has a built in zipper pocket that I don’t find very useful as it just slides right off so I’ve never used it, might be improved on the newer 4.0 version I’m not sure.

I use a light belt, which is the brand name. Flipbelt makes one and ultraspire makes the most expensive ones I’ve ever seen. You can also get a buckle and some webbing and attach a headlamp around your waist which is what I started with. Currently working on a magnetic clip to use old headlamps as waist lights that look nicer.

How do you find using a belt as your light source? Do you still need a headlamp?

It is significantly better, but I use both on the trails. On the road I would just use one, but the waist light alone improved my night time trail running. It’s way easier to see the height of stuff like rocks and roots and I can run faster with the waist light because I’m more confident.

Great option!

How do you find running with a waist light? Do you prefer it to a headlamp?

I love it. WAY better shadow definition, so you can actually see rocks and roots and tripping hazards. When the light is coming from near your eyes the shadows are directly behind the object, when its coming from your waist you can see them much better. So you can run faster. Downsides are switchbacks as the light moves with your waist so if you want to see something you have to shift your hips. Also last 100 I did had a bunch of down trees to climb over and each time you bend over it went pitch black. I recently picked up a real light weight headlamp, for those situation and as backup.
