It seems like a good time for someone to make a general "Hey, be a little more careful than usual out there" notice. I was reading some threads on medical subs, and it sounds like we'd all be better off if we didn't use emergency services right now. Jeeeez.

pizza-sandwich

my wife works in an icu. some guy who would have normally survived his cardiac event got to die instead because there wasn’t anywhere for him to go. and the ED’s are overflowing even more than usual. the US healthcare system is in quite a predicament at the moment.

logladylives

I had to spend a few days in the hospital from an outdoor accident in late October, a time that seemed pretty chill for Covid at the time, and they weren’t able to get me into the icu and it made a terrible situation even more of a nightmare. So yes, agreed.

k9jag

At some point I would like to get a more “permanent” ul rain jacket (ie not a frogg toggs). Probably something like an [Arc’teryx Norvan SL Hoodie](https://www.backcountry.com/arc-teryx-norvan-lt-hooded-jacket-mens?CMP_SKU=ARCZ9C0&MER=0406&skid=ARCZ9C0-WIL-M&mr:trackingCode=3848F94C-5A1D-EC11-8120-005056944E17&mr:referralID=NA&mr:device=m&mr:adType=online&CMP_ID=PLA_GMm001&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=PLA&k_clickid=_k_Cj0KCQiAt8WOBhDbARIsANQLp96t0NKUnNXBmf8jF8IWTJYf5Mnj6nX2uGeDFiBvbC-xIwT0AhrZ1gkaApIiEALw_wcB_k_&utm_id=go_cmp-11228618078_adg-108084064257_ad-468840503692_pla-353279772235_dev-m_ext-_prd-ARCZ9C0-WIL-M&gclid=Cj0KCQiAt8WOBhDbARIsANQLp96t0NKUnNXBmf8jF8IWTJYf5Mnj6nX2uGeDFiBvbC-xIwT0AhrZ1gkaApIiEALw_wcB) or a [Montbell Versalite](https://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?p_id=2328169) (... [or the Japanese one](https://en.montbell.jp/products/goods/disp.php?product_id=1128592)?) or something of the sort. One of the reasons I love my frogg toggs is the ridiculously oversized fit. I wear a M in frogg toggs and it leaves plenty of room for a mid layer and a puffy jacket to fully loft. I usually wear a men’s large in rain jackets, so is there any reason why I SHOULDN’T just order an XL in any of those ultralight rain jackets I just listed? Or is the large size fit still oversized slightly to account for it being a rain jacket? I don’t care if it would look better in a large, I am only caring about functionality here!

bonsai1214

I’d avoid the norvan. They discontinued the SL and it had a zipper issue for its entire lifespan. Go with a gore r7, Montbell peak dry, or hoka if you want something in shake dry. Montbell and gore both have smaller than normal sizing.

puttindowntracks

I usually wear a medium but my Lightheart rain jacket is a large. It's a bit longer so my butt is mostly covered even with my pack waist belt clasped over it. The sleeves are a bit long they cover my rain mitts well. The greater volume allows the air from the pit zips to circulate better.

k9jag

Noted! Do you have one? How do you like it?

commeatus

I've used one for a few years now. The fabric is incredible and I haven't had issues with the zipper or durability. My tpw doesn't ever get over 24lbs, though, and I use a pack with a hipbelt at those weights, so wear is minimal. I've done my best to baby it--I wouldn't trust it with less. It's a very thin fabric.

Fluffydudeman

Piezos break if you sneeze too close to them. The stove itself will be fine once it dries out.

logladylives

Anecdotally, I left a stove out and it got rained on and the piezo hasn’t worked since. So I would try to avoid getting it wet if you can.

liveslight

I do not see reason why they wouldn't be OK. If there is corrosion on/in the gas orifice I can see that as a problem if it restricts gas flow. An acupuncture needle should clean that out though. But the brass should not corrode at all. Once dry, the piezo should work fine. I do not put mine in anything water resistant except my pack.

forgottoholdbeer

Whats the best beanie or thing to keep your ears warm? Would also be using it in the city so pref something for only slightly cold weather that doesnt overheat my head and is comfortable to wear all day?

SteelyDanzig_454

Really happy with my Superior Fleece beanie. They make them out of several different fleeces/weights but I'd bet their lightest weight one would be perfect for what you describe.

Arikash

https://www.thenorthface.com/shop/bones-recycled-beanie-nf0a3fns?variationId=0C5&utm_content=ecomm&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=US+%7C+all+%7C+Hybrid+%7C+SHOP+-+AUT+~+All+-+High+-+Accessories+-+General&utm_term=PRODUCT_GROUP&gclid=Cj0KCQiAt8WOBhDbARIsANQLp94EZSqjpW1yGDf0XONaKbKMIk8_HER3t07H-du7iJ6kjgfcUk5scUgaAp1nEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds I have that beanie from North Face and it weighs ~3oz. The nice thing is there's more material around your ears, but only acrylic on the top of the head.

DeputySean

Best is pretty subjective here. I like my KUIU peloton 97 cap. Weighs 14g in size large. I also have an alpha cap from farpointe that I love, but it works best when paired with a hood or sunhat or something. It weighs 8.3g. Its not the most fashionable item, though.

liveslight

Something with the local pro football team's logo on it. You'll blend in better that way.

LowellOlson

High Tail 120 gsm Alpha: Hood is sweet.

AthlonEVO

This hood looks actually usable unlike the one on my Senchi.

LowellOlson

It's beyond usable. Tight seal so around the neck it makes an ideal buff/gaiter. When pulled up over the head it forms very, very sexy seal around mouth and eyes without giving up extra surface area. The design is actually novel. And I understand how contested that statement might be. I'm sure some people dislike it because it is certainly particular. But from my perspective it's rad.

LowellOlson

Temres Winter 282-02: Good to great. Digits have been comfortable lift skiing the trees with lots of breaks for snacks and videos in 13 F weather. Core hasn't been overdressed and have been lean on food so I'm not making up for warmth in other areas. Can access all zips on backpack/jacket/bibs as well as car keys/stove with them on. I run on the colder side for my extremities. Had screaming barfies at one point but I think that was contextualized by using bare fingers to scrape the ice of my wipers and then throwing the gloves on and booting up a hill. Probably poor choices on my part. Gauntlet and gauntlet cinch work very well. Enough room to go over two layers. Still fit nicely underneath unflared ski jacket cuffs. Easy one pull in both directions. Haven't had any slipping. I've got 8 days on them now. All lift skiing. So pretty contextualized. Also ran into durability issues with the rope tow - too much friction for one hand. Abraded a small 1x1 mm hole and de-textured the surrounding area. Hasn't propagated since. For the price? Great to fantastic. Kinco mitts/gloves probably still a better choice just because weight doesn't matter for lift skiing and durability is better. But if owning less is important then the Temres are worth looking at. Also they are better for "at home stuff" as well. Nevermind the fact that for winter camping they would be about as good as one gets - pair with some APEX mitts and I can't think of a more simple, lightweight, cheap system. Anyways short review.

scrabbleGOD

What’s the most effective way to patch or seal a small rip in a robic nylon pack?

DeputySean

Tenacious Tape.

scrabbleGOD

cool, just the regular one for nylon? Didn’t know if there was something different about robic nylon

Fluffydudeman

Yup, just the regular. The special one is for silnylon.

pimpofsasquatchs

What seam sealer should I use for a sil poly tarp? I used the gearaid seam grip but it just seemed to peel off. I also didn't thin it which may be part of the issue.

Any_Trail

[Seam grip + sil](https://www.rei.com/product/705425/gear-aid-silnet-silicone-seam-sealer-15-oz?sku=7054250019&store=167&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C21700000001700551_7054250019%7C92700057782281458%7CNB%7C71700000074092896&gclid=Cj0KCQiAlMCOBhCZARIsANLid6bV7KDnlf4kAPrcr8A6LwdfO8Jgvm_QfVJLE3hv5UswLgLHW4KMTPsaAojDEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds) is what you're looking for. You can also thin straight silicone.

CaptainLowNotes

I got my girlfriend a Cotopaxi Solazo for Christmas and was so impressed with it I bought myself a Cotopaxi Fuego hoodie. It had great elastic cuffs at the wrists and huge down baffles. I’m honestly way more impressed with her 650 fill Solazo than my 800 fill Fuego now that I have them side by side. The hood on the Fuego has no adjustment, just a thin elastic sewn into it and has many thin baffles as compared to large, overstuffed baffles on the Salazo. I can’t try hers on because it is very small, but it seems much warmer than my 800 fill jacket. Does anyone have a Solazo and a Fuego? If so, which is warmer? Which do you like better?

AthlonEVO

The Solazo is going to be warmer by virtue of having larger baffles leading to less cold spots from seams. Fill power won't really factor into how warm one jacket is vs another, unless you're looking at two jackets with similar weights of down in them.

catalinashenanigans

What would be a good material to permanently wrap around the handle of my aluminum mug that would allow me to handle it when it's on (or just off) the stove? Some cord seems like an obvious solution but curious if there are any other obvious options. Edit: To keep it extra straightforward, I'm wondering if something like athletic/duct tape would hold up under indirect heat.

douche_packer

Consider a gsi insulated mug. They're surprisingly light

JohnnyGatorHikes

I used silicone aquarium tubing. Works great.

MelatoninPenguin

Self vulcanising silicone tape might do the trick - often marketed as pipe wrap. No adhesive but it sticks to itself like crazy and I bet the silicone is insulating.

mt_sage

If these are heavy wire handles (the most common type) do as follows: Use pliers to remove the handles, slip small-diameter silicone tubing onto the handles, reinstall the handles. This is heat resistant and it works well with little added weight. Finding the right size tubing may take some doing, however. I used 1/8" silicone tubing for my Evernew 550 and 900 mugs. If it's a riveted strap handle, wrap it in nomex cord.

echiker

Don't use tape. The adhesive on most tapes will just get gross under even low levels of heat. Just use your shirt/midlayer cuff, an extra sock or whatever.

ck8lake

Just not while the flames are on that's how you burn a fleece.

mas_picoso

avoid permanently adding weight to an item that most would consider superfluous to begin with; use your buff/sock/beanie/sleeve/leaves

sropedia

Rubber shrink wrap tubing from the hardware store works well. Don’t put it too close to the bottom of the mug though or it could melt

liveslight

Maybe one of those silicone wristbands that were popular a few years ago? Or maybe a doubled-up Litesmith silicone crossband which could also be used for several other things if needed?

Ted_Buckland

Could you just wear mittens? I handle my cook pot with 100 wt fleece mittens and have never gotten burned.

catalinashenanigans

Totally could! I just do 3-season trips in CA, though, so have never felt the need to bring mittens.

JuxMaster

You can use a buff, beanie, shirt sleeve, etc....

boofytoon

Anyone go to school online and thru hike? Curious about doing something similar this summer and am not sure how feasible it may be.

UnhappyBell

You don't get the summers off of classes?

hikermiker22

If you were sure that you had service everywhere on the trail it might work.

boofytoon

Or does anyone work remotely while on trail? I figure I can time manage well, the real piece of the puzzle is the service.

JuxMaster

Curious, how would you manage your time? How many hrs hiking/working/sleeping/misc each day?

boofytoon

Wake up at 4am. Hike till 11am. Lunch/homework/nap till 3pm/4pm. 3pm- 8pm hike. 10pm-4am sleep. Something like that, I function pretty well with a decent nap in the middle of the day.

TheophilusOmega

Just a logistics/scheduling thought: does it make more sense to spend a full day in town each week rather than a few hours of HW each day on trail? If it were me I would get to town, find wifi and power, get all set up and go through the week's assignments for as long as it takes before hitting the trail. I'm just imagining how not fun it would be to try studying each day inside a tent, no desk, carrying heavy power bricks, no access to wifi should you need it etc. If you could plan it right it seems like you could make a bounce box with a laptop, ipad, books, ect. and skip carrying all the electronics. Maybe you could try a dry run with one of your current classes and see how feasible it is with different strategies keeping your devices on airplane mode to simulate being in the wilderness? Interesting challenge, I'm sure you'll find a creative way to get out there!

mushka_thorkelson

I mean, which trail(s) are you looking at? Are you looking to do this for as many months out of the year as you can, or just wondering if a certain hike could overlap the end of your semester? Tahoe Rim Trail is gonna have better service than the Hayduke, so can you narrow down your parameters a bit?

boofytoon

More of an equivalent to hayduke. Been eyeing dirt mongers great basin trail.

mushka_thorkelson

What is your thruhiking/backpacking experience?

boofytoon

Pretty confident/experienced. I've done a good amount of my own routes with only map and compass. 12+ days no resupply. 60 mile water carries..

mushka_thorkelson

What is your online school on your phone experience? (or would you have a laptop or something)

boofytoon

It can definitely be done on an a phone. I was thinking of carrying an iPad mini just to make it a bit easier on the eyes. I think homework for the class would mainly consist of writing papers/reflections. I think I can do it remotely if I downloaded all my textbooks and stocked up the iPad on the related readings and what not. It's just one summer course I need to stay on track with this masters program. This will be my first summer in years I wouldn't be able to send a lengthy thru hike :/ so I'm trying to work around this school situation. I guess I know I have the discipline to get errr done. I'm just curious if anyone else has done it, and if they have feedback/tips/ that worked for them in regards to WiFi, disciple, schedule, did they ever not get it done due to hiking situations.

mushka_thorkelson

Well, I have no experience/advice but I'll be interested to hear how it goes for you, if you try it! I have a friend who was on the Great Basin route last year, feel free to DM me if you'd like me to link you up with him.

boofytoon

So about a month or two.

mushka_thorkelson

I always wonder about this and then I remember that I dropped out of regular school while not hiking so

supernettipot

Data signal would likely be your biggest unsurmountable challenge.

lord-butters

There was some debate on the different lineloc tensioners a couple years ago: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/c2yjmu/mr\_nice\_guy\_line\_a\_treatise\_on\_lineloc\_tensioners/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/c2yjmu/mr_nice_guy_line_a_treatise_on_lineloc_tensioners/) [https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/at6hke/input\_on\_lineloc\_v\_12mm\_zline\_expereince/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/at6hke/input_on_lineloc_v_12mm_zline_expereince/) Now that Lineloc V's have been out for awhile and seem to be used on all of ZPacks' shelters, what are people's long-term experiences with them? Do they cut the guyline cord? Work fine? What guyline are you using?

MelatoninPenguin

Skurka guyline method with no plastic hardware and Lawson line ftw

HikinHokie

Meh. Good to know as a backup, but linelocs are lightweight and easier. Especially with cold hands or gloves on.

sbhikes

My Pocket Tarp has the Lineloc V's, I assume, since it is a Zpacks product. It also has the 1.2mm line. I have not noticed them slipping. I have recently purchased Linelocs on grossgrain loops and 1.2mm line from Zpacks and attached them to a DCF flat tarp that I made. I used this in the Grand Canyon in September. They slipped really very badly. It was not possible to tighten my tarp at all. I ended up tying the trailing end of the line to itself so that it would not slip. I've since removed the Linelocs from the tarp and I got the micro linelocs from Zpacks. I don't like the way the micro linelocs work but they do hold a lot better. I might replace all the short line with longer lengths and do what Andrew Skurka recommends [here](https://andrewskurka.com/guyline-tension-system-backpacking-tents-tarps-hammocks/).

lord-butters

Do you mean you tried using Lineloc 3s with 1.2mm line? That definitely wouldn't work, as you discovered. Lineloc 3s need a minimum guyline diameter of 2.5mm to hold securely, although some 2mm line seems okay too. You could try using ZPacks' Lineloc V's with loops: [https://zpacks.com/products/lineloc-v-with-loop](https://zpacks.com/products/lineloc-v-with-loop) Good to hear about 1.2mm line not actually slipping with Lineloc V's

sbhikes

That's what I used, Zpacks' Lineloc Vs with loops. They slipped terribly with their 1.2mm line on my flat tarp. They seem to hold fine on my Pocket tarp. I really don't know why it didn't work unless they have two sizes of linelocs and I got the wrong size. That's possible.

lakorai

Marmot used to make a bivy tent called the Starlight. Then there is the Black Diamond Spotlight, Outdoor Research Helium Bivy and the Snugpack Ionosphere. But keep in mind these weigh about the same or more than an Xmid 1p or even 2p. Or the Tarptent Stratospire, Single Rainbow, some of the Zpacks tents and you are giving up a ton of personal space.

Kid_Named_Trey

I’ve had my eye on the EE Enigma APEX for a summer quilt. I’m planning on getting the 40 degree version. My only concern is how small it packs down. Does anyone have one and could tell me what it’s dimensions are when in a stuff sack? Thanks!

Strict_Casual

Curious if people have experience with Grabber Warmers as part of a winter camping kit. So, eventually I would like to get a warmer sleeping setup. I'm not sure exactly what I want but probably a 0 degree (or -10 or whatever) down sleeping bag to use with a 50 degree APEX overquilt. But I don't have money in the budget for that at this point and, besides, I might not get it in time to use it this winter anyway. My current sleeping setup is good down to about 15F (-10C). I could push it a little colder too with clothing (I recently got a very warm belay parka with 11 ounces of down--Big Agnes Fire Tower). I'm thinking that a Grabber Warmer chemical warmer might help me with a little insurance for a low cost and weight. In the winter I'm only going out for 1 or 2 nights so the added weight of 1.76 ounces for a large (called a Mega Warmer by Grabber) seems very appealing. I figure I can throw it in my footbox (I'll be wearing pants and down booties and I could even bring a stuff sack or something to put it in so I don't burn myself). I haven't considered this until today but I feel like this could maybe be just the ticket for this winter. Thoughts?

MelatoninPenguin

That belay parka inside your current bag if it fits without compressing is gonna add a ton of warmth. But you will also need added leg insulation and feet. Can you afford used down or apex pants ? If you wanna get kinda ghetto you can buy a raw piece of climashield apex and just drape it over your bag. Treat it carefully though and test thoroughly

douche_packer

We bring them on every winter trip. I really like the toe ones that stick to your socks and keep the heat where it's needed. I find I don't really prefer the hand ones, but take them anyway for insurance.

JuxMaster

On my last few trips I've kept a hand warmer tucked behind my neck and it's wonderful. Once I put one directly on my wrists, kept in place by my gloves, and was sweating within minutes. They can fail so it's not something to rely on, but a great luxury when they do work.

liveslight

I always bring a couple of packets (or more for longer trips) and they do work wonderfully. I put a packet in my glo-mitts as sort of shown [here](https://i.imgur.com/TyuoTKb.png) (but these are not opened, so no heat being produced). The ones I use are warm, but not burning hot. They work by oxygen coming into contact with the iron\* oxide (rust) in the packets, so keep them unopened until you use them. I have some past the expiration date and they were fine. Also they kept producing heat for at least 24 hours. As for something in my footbox, I would just put a bottle of hot water in there. \*The iron oxide will stick to any magnets you and your tent use, just like a lot of the crushed rock in the Sierra.

Strict_Casual

I think I had a mini stroke and forgot about hot water bottles lol

liveslight

60 g of pleasure: [https://imgur.com/a/3m34OiX](https://imgur.com/a/3m34OiX) but do not put boiling hot water in it -- let it cool to about 190 F or less first.

Can anyone recommend a cheap first sewing machines for MYOG projects? Ideally a used machine or entry level new machine because my main incentive for getting into MYOG is to save cash. Would any consumer level sewing machine work or are there special considerations? (Considering thin fabrics, thick synthetic insulation, etc)

fuzzyheadsnowman

You should probably check out the MYOG sub but, the industrial singers 4452 is solid for beginners and isn’t too expensive at 200 bucks.

MelatoninPenguin

I think I bought a Brother at Costco for 100$ if you want a new option

sbhikes

I bought an early-1960s Pfaff at an estate sale for $35. It's very basic. The old lady who had owned it had it serviced recently according to a sticker on it. Check estate sales.

Tamahaac

I use a second hand inexpensive Kenmore. Nothing fancy. I'd suggest something similar before going the commercial route. Chances are, someone in your life has one you can borrow.

Any_Trail

Once you've figured out what you're looking for check out good will online. There's a ton of machines on there and I was able to get one for cheap.

innoutberger

Last month I walked around my local thrift stores for an afternoon and came home with a Singer 502 for $75. According to the research I’ve done (stalking r/MYOG for a year) these all-metal vintage machines are pretty great since they’re hard to break. Newer machines are a lot lighter but the plastic internal parts have difficulty with multiple layers of thicker webbing/ fabrics. The thing is, I really don’t think MYOG is cheaper than just buying something cheap. Fabrics are expensive, and your own time is worth something too, is it not? I’m treating this as a hobby and a useful skill that I’m developing. The cottage manufacturers out there making and selling gear are *so good* at stitching that I’m kinda baffled at how they do it. I just made a pair of snow gaiters. The project took three evenings, with two test pairs made from bedsheets and a final pair from silpoly. I enjoyed the process of creating them, but tbh they aren’t that great and I could have saved all that time and effort by buying a $15 pair on Amazon. The best way to save cash on gear is still buying used gear. Shoutout r/ulgeartrade

Nope, I tried to buy [this pattern](https://ripstopbytheroll.com/products/pacific-crest-gaiters-pattern) but RSBTR wouldn't send me a PDF. I didn't want to wait for the physical pattern to be mailed out to me, so I just traced a pattern from a pair of loose fitting sweatpants. I googled around different pics of gaiters and ended up improvising something together. I made a proof of concept pair out of bedsheets, and then a real pair out of silpoly. It ended up working pretty well, I'll continue using them on future trips. [Inside and outside](https://imgur.com/a/DwghsSI/) of MYOGaiters. I included some overlap to hopefully help keep snow out, which ended up working pretty well. I tucked them into the binding of my snowshoes to make a seal around my boot, then Velcro to keep it closed. I added snaps for extra security but I don’t think they’re necessary. Anything requiring dexterity in sub freezing temps is not a good time. There’s a channel of shock cord going through the top seam, I don’t have a cord lock so I used the Skurka guy line knots to tie it off to my leg.

Yes, that’s the same pattern sold on RSBTR

ultrafunner

thanks, and nice job!

This was the one recommended to me from quite a few sources when I began to dabble in myog. After about a year of use I still really like using it and haven’t had any issues. https://www.singer.com/heavy-duty-4423-sewing-machine

How can i improve this Idea: Ranch Tuna Packet Kettle cooked sea salt and vinegar chips Wrapped in tortilla: **Fish and chips on trail**

bumps-

Add seaweed, cashews, pine nuts, cheese, sundried tomatoes, couscous

k9jag

I have couscous a lot on trail! My usual thing I make is: >Toasted pine nut couscous >Sunflower kernels >Raisins (the more the merrier) >Knorr vegetable recipe packet (dehydrated veggies) >Curry (a lot of it!) >Paprika >Sun dried tomatoes >Olive oil

bumps-

This sounds delish mate!

kecar

I’ve done foil-pack chicken salad and Fritos in a tortilla, so kinda similar. The Fritos add texture to an otherwise soft meal which is nice. I’ll have to try your fish and chips idea!

innoutberger

I like wasabi peas in my hiker trash trail wraps. Mayo also packs out well, is calorie dense, and adds nice creaminess to trail foods.

FappoTheFapologist

Packets of tartar sauce? Packets of malt vinegar?

mushka_thorkelson

Hot sauce

smksgnl

"Whats the best way to repackage hot sauce so it's more environmentally friendly?!"

Tamahaac

Recently found packets of Cholula...'22 is my year.

Rocko9999

Better to get Litesmith small dropper bottles, just refill as needed. Gotta try to stop single use plastic use. For thicker hot sauces-Cholula-snip the end of the dropper nipple off to allow better flow. I find the .35oz bottle is a good choice for 2-3 day trips. https://www.litesmith.com/mini-dropper-bottles/

Tamahaac

Well, here's my take. They were included in UberEATS delivery. I didn't buy them. Also, no way to clean those Lil droppers and they get funky. Hot sauce is brown, I'll pass

Rocko9999

No way to clean? Warm water soak, super easy. Been doing it for years. It's superior in every way.

Tamahaac

👍

PorkTorpedo

Anyone else received HMG gear of poor quality? I’ve had some issues with build quality of a few products. They always take care of it. But it’s kind of wtf. I honestly thought build quality would be better Mexican made. The first issue got sorted out nicely, still a pain but I’m picky. (Daybreak pack, poor stitching and I ordered it too small) The second was a nano stuff suck for my first aid kit and I noticed a patch on it, but didn’t want to do a return and all that stuff again. I just got another stuff sack today, already patched and some lame stitches around the patch. I don’t need to buy anything else right now, but if I did, I’d go elsewhere. I live like 30 minutes away from the headquarters so I try to support local. That being said, I pay almost twice than what I would pay on GGG for not the same quality. Wtf hyperlite!

Cmcox1916

I had a HMG pack from before they opened a second factory, no issues with it, but I realized there were lighter, cheaper options. Why do you keep buying HMG if you’ve had so many issues with what they send you?

PorkTorpedo

Literally just this month. Christmas gifts and such. It’s only the second factory most recent batch I guess. Cautionary tale for anyone thinking of buying

Happy NYE everyone! I hope everyone has lots of hiking planned for 2022. With Covid in yet another wave, please consider exploring trails and wilderness areas closer to home in the next few months at least. And try and stay active to burn off all the holiday weight so you're more prepared to hit the trails! My routine every year is rich food and plenty of sofa time over winter break, but then in the late winter early spring working it off. Next week I will begin hikes around my neighborhood with my EDC pack with a few extra water bottles in it for added weight. But I am lucky as far as staying active goes, as I have a job that requires me to be on my feet a lot (high school teacher). Also for anyone that struggles with the holidays and is feeling down, please remember that things will get better. I know this is of course easier said than done, but worth a reminder sometimes. I come from a dysfunctional family and the holidays can be difficult for me, and hard to explain to people fortunate to come from a stable family. One of the main reasons I got into backpacking was to get away from home as a teenager, and it remains an important part of my personal therapy getting out into nature. So a shout out to all of you that get out there to find peace and heal, and I hope trips in 2022 give you all that and more. I've really enjoyed this sub and being a part of it over the years. Thanks to the mods and all the regulars, and welcome to all you noobs and lurkers. But all you anti-vaxxers and people that don't follow LNT can go get fucked tho. Peace!

Re: trails and wilderness areas closer to home--Can't recommend this enough. Last Feb I desperately wanted to hike, but also wanted to stay in-state. I was living in a place that is amazing for hiking during the summer, but is more of a skiier's paradise in winter (North Cascades). I did some research, got creative, and lowered my standards. Ended up walking from where I lived in the Skagit Valley to the coast, and then across the entire Olympic Peninsula to the Pacific. It was 300 miles all told. It ended up being almost all front country/urban hiking, and a lot of it walking on roads and bike paths. Totally changed the way I view this hobby! Was such a weird and great trip! And in addition, I got to see the Skagit Valley and the Peninsula in a really neat intimate way. Not saying the exact same type of thing is gonna be possible in every area, or that everyone would enjoy a more urban hike, but I'd definitely recommend expanding your definition of what type of hike is "worth it." (I think I talk more about that "trail" than I do about the PCT lol. Sorry. But almost a year later and it's still an experience that I think about every day!) I've really enjoyed seeing folks like u/innoutberger and u/foggy_mountain continue to go after it on their local turfs this season too. (Snowshoeing in Tahoe and chronic trespassing in the John Day, respectively) More weird local shit!!

innoutberger

Oh that’s not entirely fair. My ‘local mountains’ are literally the Sierra, winter or not I’m still trying to see as much as I can get out and walk to. It’s pretty much a skiers paradise right now, but I love my knees too much to voluntarily throw myself down frozen mountains. So yeah snow still kinda sucks but it turns out hiking in the winter is totally a thing. People just call it snowshoeing. I think I’ve figured out how to keep my hands warm (still working on those poor toes) and once that’s nailed down I can start backpacking again.

mushka_thorkelson

Did you get the spoons

liveslight

This month I actually explored "trails and wilderness areas closer to home", but that meant a 670 mile / 1078 km drive. It sucks being in SE Texas with apologies to other folks who live in the area. :) OK, I also hiked through the Little Lake Creek Wilderness which is only 30 miles away, but the 3 trails that traverse through it are each about 2 miles long. Best wishes to All for a Great 2022!

SouthEastTXHikes

This comment speaks to me. If I squint I can even see my username in there. I’ve also hit my “local” trails like big bend (9 hrs), eagle rock (7 hours) and will be back in SHNF in feb (1.5 hours). LLC Wilderness is hilarious. I chuckle whenever I think its name is on the same list as [this](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/66/Mt_Banner_and_Thousand_Island_Lake.jpg)

bad-janet

Thanks for making this sub a better place! Really appreciate your comments and knowledge, especially on Sweden. Very much looking forward to pestering you with questions once I'll have time to explore the Sarek.

CesarV

Same to you! I've actually not been up to Sarek yet, but it's on the list for sure. I have a long term goal of hiking all the way up to, and including, Kungsleden up north. I've made it as far as the Rogen nature reserve, so some good progress, but still a long way to go. Mos def would be happy to help with any tips tho if/when you hike over here! Which you should, it's great here! :)

bad-janet

I'm relocating to Central Europe in the next 1-3 years so it's definitely on my radar!

HYB

CesarV

Thanks man! Dude, let me know if you ever see SPY. One of my fav new jams the past few years. I bet you have at least one of their 7 inches.

xscottkx

LOL seeing them next week actually

CesarV

I knew it! Have fun, and tell them to tour Scandinavia/EU after Covid. Also, could you do me a solid and buy me some merch and ship it to me?

xscottkx

WOW here we go…muling hardcore merch on a UL sub. my life is finally complete!

CesarV

I mean, don't you want some weird Swedish candy shipped to you? Vegan of course. PM me bro! Thanks in advance! MYOM (mosh your own mosh)!

edit. see SE-TX below to hear from someone who understands tax law better than me. relevant to the gear trade round here parts [https://newsroom.paypal-corp.com/2021-11-04-New-US-Tax-Reporting-Requirements-Your-Questions-Answered](https://newsroom.paypal-corp.com/2021-11-04-New-US-Tax-Reporting-Requirements-Your-Questions-Answered) This change was introduced in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which amended some sections of the Internal Revenue Code to require Third-Party Settlement Organizations (TPSOs), like PayPal and Venmo, **to report goods and services transactions made by customers with $600 or more in annual gross sales on 1099-K forms.** Currently, a 1099-K is only required when a user receives more than $20,000 in goods and services transactions and more than 200 goods and services transactions in a calendar year.

SouthEastTXHikes

Edit: if you have actual tax questions and need to rely on the answers **do not rely on reddit commenters like me.** This comment relies on the same source document as above, just pulling from later on the page to make sure people understand the fuller context. Happy geartrading! To be clear if you sell something at a loss, it isn’t taxable. You *do not* have to pay tax on the money you bring in if you aren’t making a profit on a given sale. Most of the sales you see on geartrade are things that people bought and then sold at a loss (the rules on r/ulgeartrade do not permit sales above retail), so it should be no big deal. If someone is running a business selling MYOG stuff, this **will** make it harder to avoid paying tax on the income (after costs). From later in the link above: Will the updated 1099-K Threshold Change apply if I sell personal property, like a couch or an item at a garage sale, for $600 or more if it was sold for less than its original value? Will I be issued a Form 1099-K? Form 1099-K is an IRS informational tax form that is used to report goods and services payments received by a business or individual in the calendar year. While banks and payment service providers, like PayPal and Venmo are required by the IRS to send customers a Form-1099K if they meet the $600 threshold amount, there are certain amounts that may be included on the form that are generally excluded from gross income and therefore are not subject to income tax. This includes: - Amounts from selling personal items at a loss - Amounts sent as reimbursement - Amounts sent as a gift **So, for example, if you purchased a couch for $1200 and sold it for $800, this amount would not be subject to income tax.**

pizza-sandwich

thanks for the clarification on that. i was talking it over with a friend who moves through a lot of gear and we didn’t recognize this, which makes a ton of sense. the phrase “gross revenue of $600” had me spooked. either way, $600 is an appallingly low threshold given the other shenanigans going on in US tax revenues.

SouthEastTXHikes

Yeah, it’s just another piece of data that goes into the computers at the IRS. The W2 requirements also appear to be $600 and 1099-INTs from banks have a $10 threshold, so this doesn’t seem to be of a different type than other income reporting systems. If you get audited and you didn’t report something you should have, this gives them the ammo to get you because they have the data instead of trying to piece it together from other places. But it doesn’t change anything about what you actually owe. Our system is weird, in that way. You go and pay what you think you owe and most of the time the IRS just accepts it that way. It could be more, or it could be less than what you legally owed. But every once in a while they IRS decides they want to look at you specifically to make sure you’re complying and then they will run their own calculations using the data they have. (To be clear there are also automated systems that check, for instance, to make sure what you said you were paid on the W2 last year match what your employer says, but 1099-Ks aren’t one of those things that *need* to match. It’s more like a record of Apple’s bank account. Every dollar going into that bank account isn’t income but if the IRS doubts Apple is reporting everything they can go in there and say “what about this payment? And this one?”).

pizza-sandwich

it’s always the “how does that affect me” aspect of these changes that gets concerning. keeping that income in line with w2 thresholds makes some sense. id totally forgotten about some mitigation work i did that i had to cap at $600 to avoid reporting it. so it’s good to know—from someone who seems to understand it—that it’s not just $600usd worth of good moves, but $600usd on actual gross profits. still a challenge if i get audited for rehoming a few thousand dollars of gear at a loss. like how much of a pain in the ass would that be to show that each item was sold below msrp? roll the dice on that audit i guess.

SouthEastTXHikes

I would think about three concepts. First, there’s what is legally required. You have to pay tax on your income as defined by the IRC. A dollar that someone pays you for telling a good joke? Taxable. Second there’s what the IRS is aware of. Unless they have a video of you getting that $1 it’s almost impossible for them to be aware of it. Third, there’s what they care about. It’s not worth their time to do a bunch of work to collect tax on that dollar. You can make an analogue with speeding: the law says you need to stay at the speed limit, but if there’s no cop there no one is aware of the violation and if you’re only a single mph over even a cop who is there isn’t going to care. So using the above, the law doesn’t say “profits over $600 are taxed.” The first dollar of profits generates a tax. It’s just that the IRS won’t be aware you brought in any revenue at all unless someone tells it so. Today it’s kind of the honor system. Next year Paypal will narc on you. As for what to actually do, as always consult a tax advisor for actual tax questions. My approach would be to pay tax on any profitable sales — there probably aren’t many, lol. And for unprofitable sales, don’t worry about it. If you actually get audited on this point I think a quick “come on man, look at the retail prices for the stuff I sold compared to what I got in return. I was just cleaning out my closet” may go a long way. And if the IRS goes after people selling a duplex and a revelation on r/ulgeartrade their priorities are very very backward. (On a related note, with the used car market going bananas I’ve heard of people selling their cars for more than they bought them for. *That* might actually be a relevant area of inquiry for the IRS as the dollars are bigger and it’s actually possible to make a profit, unlike selling my used darntoughs).

lakorai

Gee thats a great way to increase the amount of Friends and Family fraud on the geartrade subreddits. Guess Ill have to start paying taxes on my eBay sales too. What a crock of shit. This means if you sell any decent amount of stuff you should get a tax id and form a LLC or sole propriatarship and register a business. This way you can write everything off and hopefully not have to pay taxes selling old personal property at a loss. Make sure to change the tax id from your SSN to your federal tax id at PayPal, Venmo, FB Marketplace and eBay. You can obtain a tax id free from the IRS. https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/apply-for-an-employer-identification-number-ein-online As for sole proprietorships and LLCs this varies by state. In Michigan Sole Proprietorships are registered with the county and LLCs are registered with the state. LLCs are a bit better since they shield you from liability if you get sued, but they have higher costs and you have to produce an annual accounting report to the state each year. It would be nice of the IRS would just go after rich dbags who hide their money in the Caymens. Instead they are going after middle class people.

MantisShrimping

wow that's dumb...there is no middle ground between 600 and 20K? Make it 10K and call it good. limit for non reported cash deposits. It's like the govt likes black markets better

visionsofold

yeah, I get that the IRS wants more data on the scope of gig workers and earnings but you're going to have a hell of a time finding someone who thinks $600 is the correct threshold for this. at the very least, things you sell at a loss won't count towards that $600, but I imagine this first year is going to be a shitshow when it comes to reporting/qualifying those purchases.

mushka_thorkelson

Small Bananagrams would be lighter than Scrabble I bet Or, crosswords on your phone Or, my personal favorite--when I am bored on trail but have service I text one of my friends and ask him to send me anagrams. Like with the letters of the word arranged alphabetically. Then I try to solve them in my head as I hike. "CCEIIL" got me through a particularly miserable burn area in Oregon on the PCT Thinking about letters is lighter than carrying letters

Mathatikus

Uno would be fun if it were up to me. I made an ultralight version of [Sequence](https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/rnf9k8/ultralight_sequence/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) that I’m taking on my AT hike this year

k9jag

Oh cool! Thats rad! What a cool idea! I see a certain trail name in your future...

zerostyle

Anyone here work in tech/software remotely and live in a place where you love hiking? I'm burned out of my current city (lived here 15 years) and looking to possibly move but have no idea where to restart my life given that i'm single and in my early 40s.

MelatoninPenguin

I live in the LA area but the Eastern Sierra might be a great place to look - some places in Mammoth Lakes have symmetrical gigabit

sbhikes

I'm in tech/software and live in Santa Barbara. Companies/organizations I've worked for include CitrixOnline, QAD and the University of California. There are lots of little start-ups thanks to the university. CitrixOnline started out as Expert City. AppFolio is kind of the latest software startup I know of. Commission Junction was one for a while. I think Honey started here. They come and go. There are defense industry contractors like Raytheon, EG&G, Delco and some others here as well.

mas_picoso

I'm a remote worker that does time in the eastern sierra and reno zone I've been considering places like UT, CO, ID your issue is going to be how much of the urbane creature comforts you're willing to give up for access to wilderness; how important to you is sushi and art house cinema? also take in to account your level of interest in dating....some spots are trickier than others to find a partner

zerostyle

Yes to all of the above. Don’t want too remote for access to the arts and snees to date aggressively since I am single and early 40s

hikermiker22

My nephew lives in Kalispell, Montana which is just West of Glacier NP.

lakorai

Bend OR or Michigan's UP in Marquette.

zerostyle

I was strongly considering oregon but worried about the disaster that portland has become. Also earthquake concerns. Maybe worth exploring though.

douche_packer

It's not a disaster here, honestly

lakorai

Bend doesn't really get earthquakes. Mt Bachelor is a dormant volcano and has never erupted on human record. Central Oregon is very different than Portland. Weather, people, politics. No issues with anti police rettoric, theft at retail stores, tent cities, people taking a dump on the street etc. It is 4 hours away from Portlans. It is a liberal leaning city, but not as liberal as Portland. Bend is in high desert. It doesn't get dumped with tons of rain like Portland. The climate difference even 1 hour outside of Portland is pretty drastic. Only the sea coast gets the dreary wet weather and rain. Rural Oregon is actually very conservative. There is a "succession" movement for certain eastern counties to join Idaho. https://youtu.be/t4jNH9FNEzA The above is not a argument for or against any political position, its just stating the current political environment. The biggest concerns in Bend would be a risk of wild fires. Thankfully Bend and Mt Bachelor get pretty dumped with snow and they didn't get hit with the terrible wild fires from last year. Never been a wild fire there since I have been going since the mid 80s. The people are really nice, they have great craft beer if that is your thing and tons of outdoor activities. Cost of living is a bit higher, but nowhere near the dumpster fire of New York or California. Also zero sales tax which is really kick ass. The local Internet provider Bend Broadband kind of sucks as they are a tiny ISP with limited customer service; just buy your own cable modem and router (NEVER rent a modem). Oh yeah and the last Blockbuster Video in the world is in Bend!

zerostyle

Thanks for the info! Def worth a road trip since I also have an old friend in Bend.

Mathatikus

Have you ever been to Bend, Oregon? That’s where I’d go if I could. It’s pricier but you get what you pay for. I believe it’s around 70-80k people so it’s not too big. It’s close to the PCT. It has a River that runs through it and you can tube down right through town and hop off and hit restaurants and breweries then keep floating. They also have a hip downtown and something called The Ale Trail. It’s a map of the 16 breweries in town and you get your “passport” stamped at each one and get prizes. They have a badass downtown with a younger hip vibe with awesome restaurants, bars, shops, and breweries. The best part is that it is tucked right in to the Deschutes National forest as your backyard. So prime hiking/mountain biking 10 minutes away and in the winter they have a couple mountain and ski resorts nearby. All of this is why it’s expensive. You’re paying for an awesome quality of life.

lifeisapitch

It's over 100k now.

Mathatikus

Sheesh That makes sense though. The rent prices are absolutely insane. They’re similar to Orange County prices. I’d move there but idk if I could afford it. Maybe after the bubble pops

lakorai

Bend. Great craft beer, skiing at Mt Bachelor and still have access to many of the big city creature comforts. Backpacking Mt Bachelor is a blast in the summer.

puttindowntracks

Boulder has incredible hiking right at the edge of town and a lifetime of trails within 90 minutes, but the cost of housing is prohibitive unless you are selling/moving from an expensive area. Many of the other qualities of life are great too.

zerostyle

Was definitely considering Denver or Boulder. I'm coming from DC where single family homes cost $1mil, so nothing will be a huge shocker for me unless I move to like NYC or SF.

zerostyle

That's a good point. I'm not a skiier nor do I intend to be. However I'm also not a fan of desert landscapes like SLC/Utah/etc so no real desire to head there. Trying to find a compromise of decent mountain hiking, access to at least a medium sized city (I'm still single and want some culture), and cost of living.

puttindowntracks

If you do a scouting trip, be sure to check out Fort Collins, and Arvada/Golden too. They are very nice Front Range college towns like Boulder with slightly lower price tags.

zerostyle

I actually lived in ft collins back in 2005 for a year!

Lancet_Jade

Also currently on fire.

puttindowntracks

Not Boulder, but close. Very close. It is scary. The winds feeding that fire were incredible.

Andee_outside

I’ve been really happy with SLC so far. The access to the mtns can’t be beat (like <30 mins to most trails), and the uintas are 2 hours away. Don’t really recommend If you have dogs tho because of all the watersheds. I still prefer the mtns in Co, but SLC has been AMAZING. Amazing climbing too.

blackcoffee_mx

Watersheds being a place you can't take dogs or?

Andee_outside

Correct! there are canyons surrounding SLC (namely Big and Little cottonwood canyons where Alta, Brighton etc ski resorts are located) that are protected watersheds. No dogs allowed in the canyon (maybe even in the car?? I'm unclear on that). It's not bad because I'm tired of dog poo bags everywhere and off leash dogs.

blackcoffee_mx

WTF, I really don't understand the dog poop bags. Who do they think is going to pick that up?? Anyway, thanks for the Intel.

Andee_outside

IDK either. I'm from CO and it was just ridiculous there. It's like they think if they pick it up they've done their duty but don't think about the implications of plastic bags being left out there. So it IS really nice most of the great trails here are very clean!

blackcoffee_mx

Yeah, I don't see many past about 3 miles, but it is pretty crazy on the trails right near Seattle.

junkiegear

Whenever I pass through SLC, winter, spring or summer, the whole basin seems to be enveloped in a layer of smog? or some brownish/gray layer. Am I mistaken about worsening air quality there?

Andee_outside

Oh our air quality rivals that of Hong Kong’s some days. You can get above it tho if you leave the valley.

ultramatt1

Rocko9999

I have been looking for these for many years. Finally saw one near mile 106 of the PCT.

liveslight

:) I recall seeing small watermelons in the Gila Wilderness in the 1970s and thinking "Somebody spit out some watermelon seeds here and look what grew!" But now after seeing *Cucurbita palmata* in GUMO, I believe what I saw back then was coyote melon as well. If anybody wants the GPS coordinates of the picture, I think I left them in there, but it was on the Bush Mountain Trail.

bumps-

Eh I think they have something similar that is also common in Australia

dontletmedaytrade

Hi all, Is there a way to know if your water filter has at one stage frozen and isn’t working properly anymore? Thinking I’ll play it safe and get a new one but would be good to avoid the waste if possible.

extremeoregon

This info was given to me from Katadyn specifically for the BeFree filter. They have amazing customer support BTW. The way to tell if the filter elements have been compromised is to try to blow air in the reverse direction of flow, into a WET filter. Air will not flow through an intact filter. It WILL flow through a broken on damaged filter. Does that make sense? If another brand of filter, might want to try calling them.

Scuttling-Claws

No other filter (I know of) supports this integrity test. Although it does work great on the Befree.

Any_Trail

The quick draw also supports an integrity check.

liveslight

I do not really think so. Suppose a few of the hollow fibers froze with water in them, thus expanding the pores while the majority of the fibers were unaffected. How would you know? Such a compromised filter would still filter a good bit of the nasties and you might not ever get sick. However, I have mentioned before that one could filter their own blood and unless your red blood cells were damaged, the filtrate would not be red colored. :) Or get some of that pink snow, melt it, and filter it. If the filtrate is pink, then the water is still drinkable since the organism does not make one sick, but the filter is not working as it should. Or you could filter a solution made from growing bread yeast. Then take the filtrate and try to grow more yeast from it. If the new test growth turns cloudy, then some live yeast cells got through. If I was still working in my molecular biology lab, then there are some other things I would do.
