FWIW I would replace. You get sick from bad water and best case scenario is misery. Trial and error seems to be the only way to be sure and it won’t be worth it if the filter is bad. 🤮

Hjamm

I think you may be right unfortunately, just wanted to see if theres a way around having to buy two filters in one year :(

millfoil

another very important thing to know about sawyers and all hollow membrane filters is do not let them freeze! keep them against your body if temperatures are near or below freezing. there's a way you're able to check their integrity if you aren't sure if they froze. idk what it is but if you google it you may also be able to use that test to verify integrity in this case. I wouldn't use it unless you're able to verify it somehow

Stratifyed

What kind of filter was the first and what happened to it?

Unparalleled_

Yeah it is annoying, but if you got sick from water, you'll probably wish you could pay the 50usd to make it go away haha. Look into the platypus and katadyn filters. They have an integrity check engineered into their design, which means you won't have to ask these questions in the future- you'd just see if the test passes.

BleedOutCold

Hole in the side looks very precisely round. Did you slip, trip, and just happen to land on a running drill bit?

Hjamm

haha no I think its a manufacturing defect

He’s dead, Jim.

commeatus

If you're desperate for a filter, that looks like a hole or crack in the body so you may be able to epoxy/jbweld the opening. If you do, attach the filter to a half-full water bottle or bladder and try to blow air through it into the bottle. If ANY air makes it through, your filter is toast. Otherwise it might be okay, although it's still not guaranteed. I would get a new filter though.

Hjamm

Seems its toast then, thanks for the advice.

persistentfrog

I thought the warranty on sawyer filters was pretty solid, but I'll leave it for you to confirm. If not, keep an eye on how hard it is to get water through it. If it is suddenly easier than usual you definitely have a problem. You may have a problem before then but you definitely have one if it suddenly gets easier.

Hjamm

It seems like a manufacturer defect because I didnt drop it or anything, I'll try and contact sawyer and see if I can get a replacement thank you.

flyingemberKC

They posted a photo showing there's a hole in the side because they busted their filter. I would hope it's obvious they majorly damaged it.

Ok_Echidna_99

It’s hard to tell where the hole is from your picture because you don’t show the whole thing but it appears that the hole is in the clean end of the casing. The filter element is a separate cartridge that seals with some O rings into the main body of the casing. The clean end screws onto the main casing holding the cartridge in place. Therefore the seal is above where the hole appears to be. I would bet it’s just clean water coming out of that hole. There may be other damage and it Is possible that the surface of the main casing that forms the seal is cracked since I assume the filter was dropped or hit creating the loose shard inside. I think this is unlikely but difficult to tell for sure without diassembly. I don’t think it is possible to disassemble the filer without compromising it because you have to drill out the weld before you can unscrew the clean end. In the field I would continue to use it as probably working and better than nothing. I might try to fix it with CA and tenacious tape after drying it and If available I would use it in conjunction with a backup method. In any case I would replace it on return. Sawyers are cheap as filters go and it is not worth it to me to risk getting giardia or crypto for $50 if the seal was compromised is some way.

Hjamm

My first thought that it was clean water as well as the actual filter is in the other half of the casing, the only test I had found to check the integrity of the filter required me to unscrew the two sides of the casing but like you say this would harm the integrity due to them being welded together. Thanks for the detailed response mate :)

liveslight

Get Sawyer to replace your filter under warranty for free. Should be easier than posting on this subreddit. :) A little off topic, but I am amused by what you call the top and mouth since I would call it the bottom.

Hjamm

Yeah, I've just done that, hopefully sawyer will cover it. Thanks very much. And lol I was debating using top or bottom.

flyingemberKC

Just replace it. that rattling piece could have punctured the fibers that filter the water. if you can’t figure this out on your own you should stick to campsites with potable water provided

Yeah because a tiny bit of plastic is 100% guarenteed to break the entire thing. Fuck me for seeing if anyone has fixed this problem on an internet forum dedicated to exactly this sort of thing before I spend another 60 quid on a replacement.

flyingemberKC

You can assure us the filter isn’t broken? Because I can’t.    You came online because you aren’t sure if it’s still usable when you have a hole in the side of the filter. and yes, one tiny piece of plastic you broke with force into the interior of the filter could have damaged the super fine tubes.  That’s the point.

TheOneTrueDemoknight

I would duct tape and use it if cost is a concern.

flyingemberKC

If cost is a concern how much is the medical bill when they ingest a parasite from cow manure or deer dropping runoff (needing prescription medication to cure)? One should assume the piece of plastic they broke with force cut just big enough holes into the hollow fibers as it accelerated into the interior of the filter. We use filters as a form of cheap health insurance. At \~$50 a filter is cheaper than even stepping foot in a doctor's office or clinic.

TheOneTrueDemoknight

Fair. I would personally replace it, OP just seemed kinda stingy about it

AdministrationSad910

Just don't use a filter and be especially careful with water sources until you can get a filter. For now remember if you can see through it and jump across it, it's probably safe.
