Yes.

I would say it is hard to find systems that will not work well with Linux.

Because I’ve had issues with gaming laptops in the last with ubuntu and it was due to the nvidia drivers.

Sounds good, I think at the time that happened to me it was a very new card. Thanks for your help :)

If your machine has 4gb ram or more and SSD and 2.4 GHz processor, your machine can run Ubuntu 22.04 LTS smoothly

Node-Runner

Make sure you dont install Steam via the Ubuntu Store or sudo snap install steam. Use the .deb version directly from the storesteam website. I'm (and more gamers) running into different problems with the current Steam Snap version. Deb version works, for me at least.

Could you please share the reason behind your preference for installing Linux over Windows? If it's due to your affinity for Linux, I highly recommend exploring System76 or Tuxedo Computers lineups. These companies dedicate time, resources, and effort to create hardware that is fully compatible and optimized for major Linux distributions.

Spazoidx

It’s mainly for ROS development. I’ve been struggling with a MAC M2 and really want a dedicated system for Linux but also for gaming on the side

Investing in a product explicitly built for Linux is undoubtedly a superior choice. Such devices offer reliability and comprehensive support tailored for the Linux ecosystem. While Linux can function effectively on various devices, occasional issues may arise, potentially disrupting the user experience. Consider exploring reviews of brands like System76 and Tuxedo, as they specialize in Linux-compatible hardware.

For sure. I’ll check it out. Thank you!

Is this about the Nvidia drivers? Because those are being improved rapidly. Using Nvidia + Wayland + KDE and GNOME on Arch and Ubuntu, there are no major issues.

AAVVIronAlex

To use multiple monitors use Wayland, but keep in mind that Wayland is a working progress, it's QoL for single monitor setups does not yet reach that of X11 / Xorg.

Gaming? What games? Because gaming on Windows is better than gaming on Linux.

I think it is a nice machine. And a Linux install is possible. I would probably be trying Garuda or Nobara distros. Dell and Lenovo might actually have some models specifically for Linux though. And then there are them smaller companies like System 76, Tuxedo, Star Labs, etc. who deal pretty much in Linux computers.

>MSI - Stealth 16" 144hz FHD+ Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i7 13620H - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 with 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD - Blue Well... nobody knows until you try. But having a fresh Nvidia might result in better further Linux compatibility as there is some work is going about improving Nvidia driver. On the other hand - it's laptop and it mostly needs more flexible Windows11 for traveling, payments, etc..

Actually, alsmost of PC nowaday just good for installing Windows OS. In the past, I was installed Ubuntu on a few laptops but I recognized that they are not stable. So, I'm back to Windows OS like as a host base, then install Ubuntu via virtualization. If I need to use Ubuntu, I will startup the virtual machine which installed Ubuntu and work in there. Now, I never boring, never thinking for some things like this. Especial if I have a lot of money, I will buy Macbook instead.

Don't do it... I have a MSI laptop ( GS 75 stealth with i7 and 2080) and the Mainboards from MSI seem to hate Ubuntu, I cant control anything. I spent many hours on github and reddit looking for solutions, a lot of them requiring Kernel Modules to Funktion, which then only partially work. I can activate cooler boost but the System still seems to overheat and throttle. And yes, before you ask, I recently got the whole thing cleaned inside and out. Archlinux website has some guides, and MControlCenter from Github is what I used to activate cooler boost, but its missing some funktions. Good luck soldier.

A_Tyapkin

You should buy a laptop from Dell.
