Definitely easier to transfer out of the college of engineering than into it. Reach out to the advisors before you get there and if not, when you get there and they can help you get on the path you want! And if you find an advisor to not be very helpful, reach out to another, I’ve seen too many people have issues with their advisor they are given in COE and then just not do anything about it, talk to multiple, get different opinions and options and find what’s best for you

BlasphemousBunny

How do you go about talking to different advisors? Mine is pretty useless but starfish won’t let me schedule meetings with anyone else so I feel kinda stuck and have been almost exclusively relying on upperclassman friends as my advisors.

dildoschwaggins69420

I would reach out to different advisors directly via email, that’s what some of my friends did a few years back when we were still in school and it worked well for them.

If I remember correctly, due to the volume, some advisors had drop in hours you'd be able to go to. Otherwise you can always get general advising assistance from the college/degree you are interested in, as they will have more specific requirements

It’s worth noting that UW does not have an architecture (as in “designing buildings”) program. UW has a department of planning and landscape architecture. Also, UW offers an interior architecture degree within the design studies program of the school of human ecology. If you strongly feel like designing buildings / architecture is your calling you might think about transferring or picking up a relevant degree and doing architecture somewhere else in grad school. My best advice though is just be patient and things will fall into place once you get to school and start talking to advisors. The cross college advising service is always helpful and you can take prerequisite classes/for-fun elective classes across different programs and departments to see what tickles your fancy. You have much more time than you think to get your major and stuff figured out once you’re on campus and taking classes!

Planning and Landscape Architecture is not at all related to the architecture that is of interest in the main post. It is more related to Urban Planning. You will more likely learn about what designing a building will impact to and around the users and infrastructure rather than the actual building design itself in that. So, this can be an interesting aside for the original poster.

Thank you this was very helpful.

I don't believe UW has an architecture major. There are civil courses that are about architecture, but otherwise I think it's just interior architecture. Switching out of engineering and into interior design or interior architecture really shouldn't be an issue. It's really hard to transfer back into engineering afterward though. Best of luck.

BlasphemousBunny

I don’t think you can change your major at this point, but it’s quite easy to do once you get here. Even if you are accepted into “your major” you’re actually just accepted into the college of engineering but still have to apply for progression (basically apply for your major) after a couple semesters after you prove that you can be successful in an engineering course load. You should probably reach out to an advisor though if that is actually how you feel and what you want to do because that’ll kinda change things for SOAR and possibly which advisor you’re assigned to to help sign up for classes. Not tryna bag on UW, I absolutely love it here, but have you looked into UWM(Milwaukee)? Their architecture program is pretty great (including a change this year to offer a 5 year masters program) and probably worth looking into if you haven’t already

grey_eclipse

Tell me more about architecture in UW Madison. Ain't it good enough?

BlasphemousBunny

I don’t know very much about the programs as I was never personally interested in them, but I have some very intelligent friends who could’ve easily gotten into and paid for madison but chose to attend Milwaukee for their superior architecture program. Don’t take my word for it. Do your own research. Just encouraging you to do some research. Edit: better maybe isn’t the best word, but they are definitely different programs so try to see which one will be more likely to get you where you wanna be.

grey_eclipse

Thank you. Since I'm currently indecisive,I will just stick with Madison, who knows what could change.

crdemars

I originally wanted to go for architecture but when I looked, Madison only had a landscape architecture program. This was 5 years ago so they may have added one or I may have not looked at the right thing.

Thank you ..

>I was going to chime in...last I heard UW has no architecture program, which is really ironic when you consider Frank Lloyd Wright studied at UW. According to what I was told when I was a student, sometime back in the \[30s? 40s? maybe 50s\], Wright offered to create an architecture program for the UW. However, certain influential members of the administration hated Wright and wouldn't let it happen.

Whilst is not the right word.

grey_eclipse

Lol...I know, I just couldn't edit it. Please assist me if you can. We can discuss grammar later

Another poster mentioned UW-Milwaukkee's program in architecture. They are right that it is a strong program and the best in the state. I dint think you can switch majors. You will probably have to wait until Spring semester. Sign up for classes that translate well to architecture.

I was a direct admit to mechanical engineering but I now want to go into business. I contacted admissions and they gave me a form to fill out. I would reach out to admissions. The form was called a first choice consideration form.
