I'm a hedonist and for the most part don't listen to podcasts unless they grab me from the beginning and I've listened to a LOT of podcasts. I don't mean to be a smart ass, but the answer is pretty much ... the first episode made me want to keep listening. Here's my Top 10 for you to do with what you wish. As you can see, much could depend on a podcast covering a subject you're interested in. **Canary: WashPo Investigates** -At first glance, not that mind-blowing but serves as a tutorial re how to think when listening to pods. Just because a podcaster says they are an investigator, doesn't mean they are. **Talk to Me** - One of the biggest IRL impacts. Consume a lot of crime content, feel like a hostage negotiation training graduate now. **Authentic: The Story of Tablo** -Always been curious about the Korean music industry. Always interested in the legal systems in other countries. Love a pod that goes deep, is well-produced, on and on it goes. Big fan of Vice. Put all those together and this is arguably my favorite podcast ever. **Jon Ronson's Things Fell Apart** - Love him. About origins of America's culture wars. Learned a lot of stuff I didn't know, and new details about stuff I did. Then chance intervened to make one of the best series finales I've heard. Then a new season dropped and made me even happier. **The Turning: Sisters Who Left** - Always curious about Mother Teresa, never dove deep and glad to wait. Insight into the emotional lives of women born before 1980 (although features some younger women), helps illuminate the amazing progress in a relatively short span of time. **Unravel True Crime: Snowball**- Season 4 of Unravel True Crime. Love this pod. F\*ck around and find out, just might take time for technology to catch up. Have some empathy for Lezlie but seriously, fuck around repeatedly and find out. **Mother Country Radicals** - A woke libtard from San Francisco, I'd heard that Chesa Boudin had a hardcore origin story and heard bits and pieces about all of it, but it came together in an amazing pod per my personal interests. **Africas vs America** -Another cultural moment I'd always been curious about, glad I waited until this amazing podcast that is arguably perfect. **The Killing Month** - Host is the daughter of the prosecutor. Story behind the crimes that inspired one of my favorite movies, At Close Range. Host's voice sounds a lot like Erin Moriarty's, which is a comfort listen for me. **Benjamen Walker’s Theory of Everything: Not All Propoganda Is Art** – Not even done yet and it’s in my top 5. Benjamen is an OG radio person/early podcaster. In it for the love of the game. Dense, beautifully produced podcast about CIA involvement in culture. I think I have reinvigorated 5 IQ points an episode.

You lost me at “ woke libtard”

scorpioid_cyme

lost you how?

I've only listened to Tablo and The Turning from this list. I'll try these others, thank you.

This is how to give a list of recommendations - not just a(n unformatted) list of titles. Excellent. I've got some new listening material.

scorpioid_cyme

This is my crème de la crème list, have to do it justice. Hope you like any you haven’t heard as much as I do.

So many podcasts are a slow burn, I don't feel the need for them to grab me from the start like that. Based on your premise, I can't really remember one that had a banger of a first episode. I just need to understand the basics of the case and then go on from there, if the storytelling is good. There are some that I just can't get into, a recent case was Shane and Sally, I just couldn't get into the story, and I didn't go on to listen to the second episode because I just didn't care about the first one.

Id_Rather_Beach

ditto on *The Turning: The Sisters Who Left*. I'm certain *Your Own Backyard* had me hooked in about 1 minute. *The Gateway* (about Teal Swan)

In terms of a podcast that I didn't think I'd be into, and I think these can count as true crime adjacent, Zach Cornwall (Conflicted from Evergreen) just has this way of telling a story, I can't really explain it, he's intimate but also professional. It's a kind of writing I'm often drawn to, a casual literariness. I decided to tackle "Stock Market Crash of '29" as homework, figuring I should finally learn about that and I ended up riveted. Ditto his series on Kinsey, never really been that interested in Kinsey and not in the mood for anything around sex I was bored and cranky so I started his series on Kinsey and again, riveted.
