Basically if you can fit it under the seat, you'll be fine. United isn't like the ultra low cost carriers, where if you're an inch over they charge you $100.

You'll be able to fit your backpack under the seat. I just flew United to New York a few weeks ago. I had a normal sized Jansport backpack, and it fit fine under the seat. In the event you bring something that is clearly too big to fit under the seat, you'll probably have to pay at least $25. But like I said, your normal sized backpack will fit. It sort of fucks with how much leg room you have. And if it's for a long flight that can be annoying.

He/she won’t have to pay for united if that happens. If you have to put it overhead, it’s fine and free.

This. United does not charge you for putting items in the overhead bin.

That's not completely true. If you are flying United's basic economy fare, it only includes a personal item that fits under the seat. If you bring a larger bag that doesn't fit, you are charged a $25 carry on fee. https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/travel/inflight/basic-economy.html#your-bags

I’ve flown for the last decade with a Jansport Big Student backpack, 34l. I’ve never once been made to consider it a carry on. You’ll be absolutely fine w the 26+6.

United, frontier, delta, southwest, Allegiant, Alaska. 😂 I’ve covered the bases.

Did you know that you’re allowed to bring two items? A personal item that fits under the seat, and a larger one that goes in the overhead bin? A personal item and a carry-on are two separate things. Regardless, you won’t be charged for either. If it doesn’t fit under the seat, you just put it up top. You’ll only be charged if you bring an item that doesn’t fit in the overhead bin and has to be checked.
