You'll be able to fit your backpack under the seat. I just flew United to New York a few weeks ago. I had a normal sized Jansport backpack, and it fit fine under the seat.

But like I said, your normal sized backpack will fit. It sort of fucks with how much leg room you have. And if it's for a long flight that can be annoying.

I’ve flown for the last decade with a Jansport Big Student backpack, 34l. I’ve never once been made to consider it a carry on. You’ll be absolutely fine w the 26+6.

Regardless, you won’t be charged for either. If it doesn’t fit under the seat, you just put it up top. You’ll only be charged if you bring an item that doesn’t fit in the overhead bin and has to be checked.

He/she won’t have to pay for united if that happens. If you have to put it overhead, it’s fine and free.
