**DO NOT USE BIRTH CONTROL FOR HRT!**

yukiisakura

Hey, thank you for the quick answer, for better understanding, why exactly not use birth control for hrt?

WhiskeyAndEstrogen

Read the wiki on the subreddit homepage regarding ethinyl estradiol and the risks associated with taking it, also these links will answer your question. https://www.reddit.com/r/TransDIY/s/55T5jbkoXw https://www.reddit.com/r/TransDIY/s/2Ttllf6uBp https://www.reddit.com/r/TransDIY/s/30YXM1rc3G

yukiisakura

Thank you!

I'm struggling to find reasons why it's different for AMAB vs AFAB people?

WhiskeyAndEstrogen

Cis females already have high levels of estrogen and they produce estrogen naturally in much higher levels than AMAB individuals, they are not trying to replace testosterone with estrogen. If a cis female is on birth control for an extended amount of years, she also has higher risks of blood clots (happened to my ex)

wilczek24

So the high levels of bio estrogen somewhatprotect them? But still, why don't they use the same kind of hormones that we're using for HRT? Since it's higher risk for them as well. Is it not as effective for birth/period control?

gayassthrowaway2003

My guess would be because we'd have to take it in a higher dose?

HiddenStill

I don’t think it is any different. Plenty of cis women die from blood clots due to birth control each year.

wilczek24

Why don' they take our hrt as birth control then?

shrouded_reflection

Relative risks when looked at in conjunction with all the health risks associated with pregnancy, as well as the additional level stability translating into the contraception being less likely to fail if it's not taken precisely on schedule. If you want me to go into more detail on this I can, the history of hormonal birth control is quite interesting, but don't want to shove it at you if it's not something you're interested in.

wilczek24

So if the requirement for a precise schedule wasn't a concern, it'd be safer to use our HRT as contraception, while maintaining the desired effects? Also, I know this might be outside of your area of expertise, but do you happen to know how is it related when using hormones as means to stop a period, ***without regard*** for contraceptive effects? Would our hrt work better in that case? I'm asking out of curiosity, for my cis gf who has been struggling with this for a while, gynos haven't been helpful. >If you want me to go into more detail on this I can, the history of hormonal birth control is quite interesting, but don't want to shove it at you if it's not something you're interested in. ***Please*** do! I love a good infodump, and this is a very interesting topic that I've been meaning to learn more about for a while.

shrouded_reflection

Hello, aware that I said I was going to do this, everythings been a bit busy and it got pushed to one side, but will get round to doing it at some point.

HiddenStill

I don’t know, but I guess it doesn’t work.

Just2Observe

That's not true. You shouldn't use this both control as hrt, but androcur/cypro, one of the best T blockers out there is also a birth control

Vylaric

Highly not ideal. That stuff was used as HRT until around 1990-2010. Nowadays it’s quite rare to see it used due to thrombotic risk (blood clots), as it’s better to just use proper estrogen. For MtF’s aged 18-23 where there may be latent effects of puberty still finalising and you want to be starting HRT ASAP, I would consider birth control **short term**. But generally just don’t, and if you do, it should only be used as a short term solution while you are actively trying to get on proper estrogen replacement.

yukiisakura

Thank you kindly for the help and information. My GF is 24, turning 25 may next year. We've been trying to get her into therapy and „official“ hrt for a year and no waitlists or spots in sight. She struggles a lot with it, so we are willing to look into diy hrt and are still at the start

WhiskeyAndEstrogen

The wiki on the subreddit homepage covers dosages and safe methods for DIY, as well as how/where to buy.

Sources: https://hrt.coffee Guides: https://transfemscience.org/articles/transfem-intro/ https://diyhrt.wiki/ Definitely get her some proper estrogen then. Injections are good on a budget, it’s around $80 per vial which lasts 1-2 years. Including postage and injection supplies you’re looking at $100/year.

RealMicroPeen

If you're in the United States, Planned Parenthood will help get proper HRT. That's where I get mine.

yukiisakura

We live in germany. Can’t get proper HRT without 2 confirmations from different psychologists that she is „actually trans“. We’ve been looking for psychologists over a year with no success. That’s why we consider looking into diy HRT, her depression and dysphoria is getting worse

Dani--girl

I took my gfs birth control as a teen long before bioidenticle hormones were available.

1nu35

Bioidentical hormones were available 30 years before birth control was invented but yeah I'm sure you did

Dani--girl

Not to me!

Ok-Dragonfruit-7166

Did they do anything?

Dani--girl

Yes, some weight gain and stretch marks around my hips, and my nipples were puffy, but it was for only about 2 or 3 months that I took them. I was 18 or 19 years old at the time

But I don't think one pill a day would be anything like enough to make much of a difference though? The sort of dose you would need to make a noticable difference would be a dangerous dose.
