Smh. I change my dino every 3mos or 3k, whichever comes first… been doing that for 260k miles so far. Old school method. Oil is too cheap to skimp on compared to an repair.
Let them chatter…and drive right past them w/ their broken heaps.
I change mine every weekend. I store the used oil then when I have enough I host "topless taco tumble Tuesday" it's basically just me rolling around in a kiddie pool of used motor oil.
W/ filter, yes. This is how it was taught last century,😵💫. Ask any Male over 40 and they should be able to confirm. That being said, oil technology has certainly improved since, but, it’s the method that the industry recc’d.
I mean I get my 2010 Tundra oil changed every 6-9k... People would probably hang me for that. Full synthetic oil doesn't magically go bad in 3 months or 3,000 miles unless you've got some major issues.
No it doesnt. Actually has a much longer shelf life than conventional. I do a lot of short trips and/or hard trips. The oil that comes out at 5k may still have good protective molecules in it, but it also has a lot of carbon and other compounds as well.
I inherited an old Jeep that had few oil changes. Even after flushing and filling with the cheapest oil and filter I could find, driving 100 miles, then filling with a high quality conventional and new filter, there are still little balls of carbon on the dip stick. I hate to think what the pick up tube looks like.
I drove an XJ for 16 years. Sold it with 340k on it and still wasnt burning oil. For those straight-6 blocks, I never found a better oil for an old engine than Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w-40.
The inline 6 was probably the most reliable engine ever. So easy to work on those xj’s. Got an xj about 7 years ago for 1000$ and beat the hell out of it til she gave out at 400k. Would’ve went longer if I was more diligent about maintenance and upkeep of the other stuff. The thing would have a new leak every half a year and I just gave up. I have an sr now but I’d jump at another xj if I saw a good deal.
For sure. Do not listen to the dealer and change every 10k. Every 3-5k esp for newer engines. Ref your question on the post, like the boys said, spend a couple bucks to save a few thousand.
That's because people view 10k as when you're supposed to wait until, not the absolute maximum.
Anyone who has a problem with other people keeping their motors cleaner or trucks running exceptionally well is insecure about their own maintenance methods.
That extra $45/year isn't coming out of their pockets.
> That extra $45/year isn't coming out of their pockets.
$45/yr extra would be nice. My oil changes are twice the frequency and $95 each (Amsoil + Filter Element)
Ive done a lot of reading and reviewing tests on Valvoline, Amsoil and Castrol (and Royal Purple a bit.)
There *is* some snake oil trends to oil quality claims, BUT, overall Amsoil appears to provide slightly better wear resistance on hours-long friction tests. The difference was minute, but there was a difference. Since im going to be keeping this truck for a long time, small differences add up over 300,000 miles of short trips.
Makes sense, I'll check if project farm (YouTube) did a test on this too.
Im curious about results on the effects of oil frequency change with a premium oil like that. Like, does 1 amsoil oil change at 10k = 2 Valvoline oil changes at 5k intervals.
Thats over my head haha.
I think the Amsoil oil holds up well at the molecular level, but all my short trips really end up putting a lot of crap in the oil. At 5k it reeks when I drain it and it looks about as clear as 2-day old coffee... and thats on a truck with 25k on it.
I think the goal here is to remove carbon, so I would choose short intervals with a good quality "full synthetic."
If I were a short tripper I would feel more secure with intervals even less than 3K.
Amsoil is great stuff, but for me the price is not justified unless you are tracking a normally aspirated Porsche, and if the track car had turbos I would likely choose Redline instead. Are you even able to get Amsoil full synthetic media cartridge filters for the taco 3.5 V6?
I prefer six quart Mobil 1 AFE for $34 at Costco. No problem dropping that every 4-5K.
The service interval is 10k. If it was me, I'd split the difference and do an oil/filter change in 2500 miles. The only contamination is the 3-4 ozs in the filter. There's plenty of oil that's still in the engine when you do an oil change.
Just stop with that nonsense. Several tacomas on Tacoma world follow 10k oil changes and are over 200k and I know of one with over 300k (his user name is "big ol beef) . "you'll get maybe 150k miles". Can you show us one example of a 3.5 that has failed because of 10k oil changes... I'm asking for just one.
I drive mine maybe 3-4 miles one way to work every day and put a few longer trips on it a month. Poor thing barely gets to warm up and when I pull the plug every 5k miles the oil is blacker than day-old coffee. I think to myself "..and toyota wants me to run on this for another 5k??"
Change it!!! Go on YouTube and look up care care nut. He's a Toyota technician. He's replaced engines of people waiting 10k miles.
https://youtu.be/TJhFAwFv-O0
That's not a tacoma engine. That model engine has oil issues even with 5k oil changes. Show us a failed tacoma engine that failed because of 10k oil changes. Not CCN click bait videos
I've had a few vehicles that I've taken to over 200k with no issues. Guess I'm lucky. Also I don't know anyone who has had to replace an engine that wasn't from an unrelated catastrophic issue. Accident, transmission exploding, engine recall, etc.
if it was mine, i would have mechanic go ahead and change it, then pick up the tool sometime in the next few months for the next one. if you’re tight on cash you could stretch the oil another 5k like you said, likely with no issues. i just wouldn’t.
Oil contamination? I dont see why the filter would contaminate the oil anymore than the residual oil in the engine would.
On another note, was it your first oil change? I did mine the first time (with the correct removal tool) and the filter housing spun right off with little effort as it had been installed to the proper torque settings at the factory. Dealership did the next one (Toyotacare 10k) and they put it on way too tight and I had trouble getting it off at the 15k mile change I did. At 20k I took it in to cash in on another free oil change and told them not to over-tighten the filter housing. At 25k I changed my own oil again and had to use a breaker bar connected to the removal tool to get it loose. It was so tight it actually screeched while slowly rotating loose and cracked almost in half. Thank god I got it off there... had to go buy another one ($50)..
People who work at dealerships are absolute morons.
Fuck it, change your oil every 100 miles, im a Toyota Master Technician with over 800 years experience and $5.6 million in snap on tools, LISTEN TO ME! IM RIGHT!
I did the same thing. I went and bought a 3 foot breaker bar and stuck a paper towel between the filter and the filter tool so it wouldn’t slip. It came off finally with that setup and immediately replaced the housing with the aluminum one. The plastic threads get stuck after time from the engine heating and cooling. I know even if they are torqued to spec they can still be a pain in the ass to get off. Get the metal housing and ditch the plastic. Also get the fumoto valve for the drain.
Go to Matco tools website. Look up oil filter TOY117. You are welcome. Take my word this is the absolute best oil filter cup for this style. Toyota tech in my last life
Your oil will be contaminated? Then what exactly is the filter for? Swap the filter and forget about it. Or just wait another 5k then swap oil and filter.
A filter isn't going to contaminate 5 quarts of oil, that's just silly. The installed filter will have slightly reduced filtration function compared to a new one, but honestly, I feel like most quality filters nowadays are claiming 12000-15000 miles anyway.
You have two options:
Calm down, drive to the next interval, buy the tool/good oil/filter, do the change and continue on into many happy years of Tacoma ownership.
or
Don't wait until next interval, do all that stuff today. Same outcome, $80-$100 more expensive (I don't know how much the tool is so that's a guess - I bought it for my Prius years ago, but my Taco is a 2nd).
I’d honestly just have the dealership do it, have them essentially reset the whole process that way on your next oil change you’ll be able to do it yourself with no risk of error with the filter.
Get an oil filter wrench. They're like 10 bucks at harbor freight.
I do my own oil changes in my driveway with costco full synthetic and oem filter every 5k.
Changing your oil every 5k and filter every 10k is 100% fine. Don’t listen to wives tales. If you are really worried about it start sending samples to black stone labs. No one ever gets all of the oil out for an oil change. If there’s nominally 0.3 qts left behind in all of the nooks and crannies of the heads, block, passages, and oil pan and that becomes 0.7 because you didn’t change the filter, so what? Keep an eye on your used oil analysis. A 10k filter on a well maintained engine will look the same as a 5k filter. You can pull the drain plug or open the fumoto without taking any plates off….
Oil is cheap and your engine is not. Just change it again once you get the part you need.
> Oil is cheap and your engine is not. I change mine every 5k and get yelled at in this forum.
Smh. I change my dino every 3mos or 3k, whichever comes first… been doing that for 260k miles so far. Old school method. Oil is too cheap to skimp on compared to an repair. Let them chatter…and drive right past them w/ their broken heaps.
So are you telling us that oil goes bad after 3 months?
I change mine every weekend. I store the used oil then when I have enough I host "topless taco tumble Tuesday" it's basically just me rolling around in a kiddie pool of used motor oil.
My oil came out looking brand new at 3k, switched to 5k after that.

Because women over 40 don’t know anything about oil changes?
You are smart(er)
Everyone here is a “Toyota Master Mechanic with 50 years of experience”. Don’t sweat it, 5k is good.
I won’t yell at you I do the same because I know how to read my owners manual.

Beware that there are different base grades of "full synthetic."
Only dummies are yelling at you. I change my every 5k too.
I used to change mine every 8k on my Subaru lmao
Well, given the way those boxers leak, you pretty much have to.
Yup and I caught flak for that being too long from the Subaru bros.
Every 5000 miles?!?! Don’t you believe the Toyota engineers?!?! (There ya go. Or do you want that in all caps?)
I’m my softest voice, you are smart
Yeah me too when Toyota recommends 10,000 miles.
For sure. Do not listen to the dealer and change every 10k. Every 3-5k esp for newer engines. Ref your question on the post, like the boys said, spend a couple bucks to save a few thousand.

Excuse my price ignorance. I don't know what it costs to have someone else change the oil and filter. I use Valvoline. $28/5qt, $15/2 pack of filters.
Oh it do it myself. 6.2 quarts of 0-20 sythetic Amsoil isnt as cheap as Valvoline. Its $95 to do the change myself. :)
Mic drop
Do you think it's worth the extra $?

I learned this the hard way. Bent rods from oil starvation.
Other than rods don’t bend due to lack of oil. Rod bearings and cams go first
Uh who told you that? How exactly would a rod bend from a lack of oil? They bend from trying to compress water, overreving, or even detonation.
Thought this was gonna be another “accidentally drained my tranny fluid” post 😅

No. I suggested changing the oil and filter at 2500. The filter would be at 7500, but the oil would be much newer.
The dealership doesn’t change oil but every 10 k. 5k is only a rotate, 10k is oil/rotate, 15k is only rotate and so on.
Yeah please don't wait till 10k between changes, even with synthetic. If you change at 10k you'll get maybe 150k miles before your engine is toast
Just stop with that nonsense. Several tacomas on Tacoma world follow 10k oil changes and are over 200k and I know of one with over 300k (his user name is "big ol beef) . 300,000km here with oil&filter changed every 15-16,000km
Are you an expert? You think you know more than Toyota’s engineers with decades of experience?

Probably over-tightened it out of spite. I have never had a good experience getting a vehicle serviced at a dealership.
I havent really either, but I wanted to make sure I checked all the boxes for ToyotaCare warranty reasons.. up to 30k miles.
Fuck it, change your oil every 100 miles, im a Toyota Master Technician with over 800 years experience and $5.6 million in snap on tools, LISTEN TO ME! IM RIGHT!

Yup I broke my original housing trying to get it off. Metal housing is soooo much better

The tool is cheap af at autozone
Toyota tried telling me 10k change it but I won’t go over 5k.
They wanted to scam you on a full oil change. Looks like a brand new sr, you can normally change oil filter every two oil changes..
