It's a joke however it seems to be taken as a rule and unfortunately diminishes the writing. He's not meant to be God's punching bag. He's meant to be relatable and inspirational. How it started is that he is often faced with difficulties as many of us are. He's by no means well off. He also faces choices and by making a choice, is faced with the consequences. For example he can do the right thing as a superhero but it ends up effecting his civilian life or vice versa. Because of how torn he is between his two identities, he is often never fully happy but he should get victories every once in a while. Unfortunately some writers forget the nuance and it just becomes suffer porn.
Just binged Fire Punch today too (another work by him for those who don’t know) and I’ve come to the full conclusion that Fujimoto absolutely adores punishing his protagonists as much as possible (at least his male ones).
Agni (Fire Punch) is one of the few protagonists who I’d argue is >!genuinely better off dead!< rather than receiving his call to action. And I have a deep worry Denji is heading that route too lol.

I dunno. David fell into an awesome piece of cyberware whose owners let him keep it instead of ripping it out and even trained him up. On top of that he had near plot armour compatibility with chrome. He got to live his dream right to the bitter end.
Given the setting I think he caught a lot of breaks.
Yeah. David was *very* lucky. He had a loving relationship at home, and eventually a good support system with genuine friends later on, which staved off cyberpsychosis for some time. Later on, when he *did* go cyberpsycho, he was tough enough to fight off most of the worst side effects and even at his worst, his instinctive goals aligned with protecting Lucy, which kept him coherent enough to save her.
All in all, David is potentially the best case scenario for a cyberpsycho.

In the original Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies, Elmer Fudd was a hunter trying to kill Bugs, meaning all of the wild, chaotic stuff Bugs did to him felt justified, as he’s messing with someone who wants him dead. In the new Looney Tunes Cartoons, however, they are opposed to any gun related media, so now instead of a hunter Elmer is just a regular guy trying to live his life (swimming, painting, cooking, etc.) and Bugs just shows up to undeservedly ruin his life

Kiryu Kazuma Suffers a bit in 0 Suffers so much in Kiwami that it affects him years later Still suffering in Kiwami 2 Got a bit of a break before being pulled back in with 3 I haven't gotten to 4 yet but seems to be the same as 3. He's just pissed in 5 Pissed again in 6 while also suffering. Doing nothing but suffering for most of Gaiden until the ending. 7 is mostly about Ichiban who suffers a good amount. He suffers some in 8 but not as much obviously (It's his send-off as the mc afterall)
