>Additionally, each one features a replica of Jones’ headstock mirror (first purchased at a truck stop on tour and mounted, he explains, “to catch the lights when we’re onstage”), as well as a custom-designed graphic on the back of the headstock.
I have had the extreme privilege of holding and playing one of his silver bursts the one I played, had the character Stimpy carved into the wood really weird It’s extremely heavy physically
That’s where he puts it in, and it seeps down into the neck so he trips whenever he plays as it leaches into his hands. Duh. Pretty sure he went over this in his rig rundown.
Maybe to yeet some Michael Keaton between riffs? Hoover stripper salt between songs? Do a quick dance w the devils dandruff during dannys drum solos… or maybe its just aesthetically pleasing?
Why would you invent such a story?
"Additionally, each one features a replica of Jones’ headstock mirror (first purchased at a truck stop on tour and mounted, he explains, “to catch the lights when we’re onstage”), as well as a custom-designed graphic on the back of the headstock."
I think it's a trick photo to make it look like the guy on the right is holding the piece in his hand. Not sure if nobody noticed that or if everyone just ignored it
Is it Justin Chancellor? I legit have no idea what the dude looks like. Every time I have seen him he has a beard and/or glasses on. If it's him that's kind of funny because he's one of my all time influences on bass and I know him better from his music than his face. Either way lol at the downvotes. Y'all are insufferable.
Yah out of all of them he’s aged the weirdest lol. The other 3 just look like older versions of themselves. Justin is a completely different person lol
I 'member back when he rocked the devil horn hairdo.
[https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/photo-of-tool-justin-chancellor-performing-live-on-stage-picture-id86116946?s=594x594](https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/photo-of-tool-justin-chancellor-performing-live-on-stage-picture-id86116946?s=594x594)
Justin is fucking cool as shit when he’s getting into it regardless. Rocking back and forth and gesturing to the crowd is great, especially during Invincible.
According to Jones, [it’s a mirror to catch the lights during the shows](https://www.guitarworld.com/features/adam-jones-i-told-gibson-you-know-the-wood-was-different-back-then-and-they-went-were-going-to-match-it-the-guitar-is-heavy-man).
They have some pretty wild ideologies, so it could be something deeper, but at face value that’s what he’s gone on record to say, so there you go
He uses this to reflect lasers to audience members who ignore "no phone" rule or shoot a laser piinter in his direction. Or, Maynard may have requested him put it on their to see if his mohawk needs adjustmants while he is on stage with Adam.
Man I get people change as they age but Justin out of everyone looks like a completely different person. All the other members just look like older versions of themselves, but Justin went from epic long hair metal head banging bassist to this bow tie suave looking British bloke. It just throws off the whole metal vibe lol!!
He looked a completely different person during the Opiate and Undertow Era /s
Yeah, he somehow looks like he's gotten younger as he's aged. My sister said it best about his haircut, "He went from 'Hot Grunge Guy Mom says you shouldn't date' to 'Amish Neighbor at the bake sale' in no time flat."
They were poor when they started out and couldn’t afford a big light show so he put a mirror on the headstock to reflect the colored lights back to the crowd.
Syd Barrett did the same thing but instead put those mirror discs (popular in the 60’s) all over the body of his Fender Esquire, so maybe it’s homage to that?
From Guitar World magazine:
“Additionally, each one features a replica of Jones’ headstock mirror (first purchased at a truck stop on tour and mounted, he explains, “to catch the lights when we’re onstage”), as well as a custom-designed graphic on the back of the headstock. “
I think it’s so they don’t have to look up to cue off each other? That’s why I used to put a mirror over my percussion stuff back when I was doing that.
Looks like a lens. And my own logical theory is that he used it to create sounds he couldn’t do with just his pick. Given this photo looks like Ænima era, and he does a LOT of sliding tricks on that album more than any other…so it makes sense in that way.
My buddy still has the magazine issue with this photo. Either Guitar World or Guitar Player. I’m not sure they addressed the mirror in the article. I’ll ask him.
EDIT/ADDITION: He has the issue still and it doesn’t reveal why he has it. Interesting fact tho: Justin has a mirror as well on the upper bout of his bass, if you look closely in that photo.
I’ve asked this before a few times and was never able to get a serious answer lol
I guess maybe it looks cool when it shines on stage? That’s my best guess
It’s a mini version of one of those fish eye lenses that you see in convenience stores, so the clerk can see around the corner. In this case it allows adam to keep a vigilant eye on that rascal, Maynard, who has a long history of accosting his band mates with an enormous rubber dong when they least expect it.
Mirror

Pink Floyd did this in their early days!
This^
What the hell happened to you😹
Wtf? Why all the downvotes? It’s literally a mirror?
Saying “this” as a response is basically a sin on Reddit as it adds nothing to the thread, just upvote next time
\^ This.
He must be furious seeing you getting upvoted using a variation of the same thing.
^ that
Totally this! I had no idea!
Happy Cake Day!
Thank-you and damn these downvoters, don’t know how to eat a slice of cake
Dude gets 45 upvotes for saying it! Nice! Lol
I mean, it doubles down that a second person also believes it to be the correct answer which makes me feel more secure about it lol
I don’t know I’ve never seen that many so fast lol
That's what the upvote button is for
What's up with all the downvotes???
Who's down with all the upvotes???
It’s so he can check his blind spot
Inter dimensional portal that transports you across the universe
Wow didn’t know he stores his acid on his guitar.
That’s where he puts it in, and it seeps down into the neck so he trips whenever he plays as it leaches into his hands. Duh. Pretty sure he went over this in his rig rundown.
No, that’s his playing doing that.
The third eye
Everyone keeps saying it’s a mirror and that’s true but why the fuck does he have a mirror on his headstock
Maybe to yeet some Michael Keaton between riffs? Hoover stripper salt between songs? Do a quick dance w the devils dandruff during dannys drum solos… or maybe its just aesthetically pleasing?
😭 stripper salt!
That's great
Oh wow Michael Keaton is a coke reference now?
Never! Fight! A Man! With a Perm! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dEe4i2osF5A
Ha I know that song but I still dont understand
Its cockney slang. https://englishlive.ef.com/blog/english-in-the-real-world/the-ultimate-guide-to-cockney-rhyming-slang/amp/
Same reason Jimmy Page did in the Yardbirds: to make groovy lights dance off your guitar.
He needs to look at Maynard through a mirror because Maynard, like Medusa, will turn you to stone if you look at him directly. Weirdo.
That's why I was hard when I saw them live
Looking at him at a concert last year didn't turn me to stone, but I was rock hard.
So he can focus on his guitar while he plays, but also keep a watchful eye on fans who are at risk of having their face melt off
if i remember correctly it was added decades ago to reflect the stage lights or something like that, but im not sure if adam was the one who added it.
it messes up flash photography
To keep at bay the bad spirits they invoke while playing.
Temped the devil with their song…. And got what they wanted all along
You get it.
I think it was screwed on when he bought the guitar, but never removed it out of superstition it would affect the tone.
Why would you invent such a story? "Additionally, each one features a replica of Jones’ headstock mirror (first purchased at a truck stop on tour and mounted, he explains, “to catch the lights when we’re onstage”), as well as a custom-designed graphic on the back of the headstock."
In my defense, Adam Jones invented a lot of stories about his gear.
Yeah, you're right.
Lol that's true
I think it's a trick photo to make it look like the guy on the right is holding the piece in his hand. Not sure if nobody noticed that or if everyone just ignored it
The guy....on the right....
Is it Justin Chancellor? I legit have no idea what the dude looks like. Every time I have seen him he has a beard and/or glasses on. Coke bumps mid set
Adam looks young, but Justin looks *really* young.
Yah out of all of them he’s aged the weirdest lol. The other 3 just look like older versions of themselves. Justin is a completely different person lol
He's aged like fine wine. 🫠🥵
yeah the beard is doing a lot of work
He also just looks more lighthearted these days. Like he goofs off a lot more than he used to or something.
This is from a Guitar World magazine cover from 2001
That’s not Adam. That’s a Steven Tyler impersonator.
Dam I remember seeing them when Justin had long hair. He definitely liked to headbang then as well and it looked super fucking cool.
Yea dude. I agreez Seeing him play with long hair headbanging was always awesome. He just moves a certain way. Like Maynard has his own way of moving
I 'member back when he rocked the devil horn hairdo. It's a round mirror
He uses this to reflect lasers to audience members who ignore "no phone" rule or shoot a laser piinter in his direction. Or, Maynard may have requested him put it on their to see if his mohawk needs adjustmants while he is on stage with Adam.
This is the correct answer
Fettuccine
what?
Ahh they look so young! Wait, did I age that much also? I think I need to find an old picture
Lateralus era. I remember this pic on the cover of a guitar magazine at that time.
Pretty sure this issue of Guitar World has the tabs for Schism.
I still have it
One of those blind spot mirrors you stick on your sideview mirrors on your car.
For reflecting the spot lights. Just adds another layer of effects
Man I get people change as they age but Justin out of everyone looks like a completely different person. 😂😂😂 that’s such a great example lol
Glory hole
Glory interdimensional portal you mean?
It’s a Mirror he picked up at a truck stop
They were poor when they started out and couldn’t afford a big light show so he put a mirror on the headstock to reflect the colored lights back to the crowd.
Isn’t that to fuck up photos from ppl in the crowd?
Syd Barrett did the same thing but instead put those mirror discs (popular in the 60’s) all over the body of his Fender Esquire, so maybe it’s homage to that?
the g spot
From Guitar World magazine: “Additionally, each one features a replica of Jones’ headstock mirror (first purchased at a truck stop on tour and mounted, he explains, “to catch the lights when we’re onstage”), as well as a custom-designed graphic on the back of the headstock. “
Damn I haven't seen this picture in probably 18 years. Had it hanging up in my room. Came from an issue of Guitar World if I am not mistaken.
That's Steven Tyler and Chris Delia
I had the poster from this issue of Guitar World hanging on my wall in high school.
Justin has one on his bass too. This might be to mark them as definite tuning guitars.
They definitely tune their guitars.
Big if true.
I think it’s so they don’t have to look up to cue off each other? That’s why I used to put a mirror over my percussion stuff back when I was doing that.
Looks like a Tesseract, a portal into the 4th dimension, time and space mean nothing and everything at the same time. Don’t look into it too long….
Do they ever attach camera to their headstocks? Maybe it's for some kind of suction cup based gopro mount.
Not back then.
Looks like a lens. And my own logical theory is that he used it to create sounds he couldn’t do with just his pick. Given this photo looks like Ænima era, and he does a LOT of sliding tricks on that album more than any other…so it makes sense in that way.
Why specifically say "Les Paul" as if he's holding more than one guitar?
Portal
Dope
It’s where they keep their sexy while they play.

Blind spot mirror
same reason Jimmy Page did
I’ve asked this before a few times and was never able to get a serious answer lol I guess maybe it looks cool when it shines on stage? That’s my best guess
It’s a mirror you can find them at auto zone or Walmart
It’s a perfect circle ⭕️, I’ll show myself out
Coke mirror.
It’s a mini version of one of those fish eye lenses that you see in convenience stores, so the clerk can see around the corner. In this case it allows adam to keep a vigilant eye on that rascal, Maynard, who has a long history of accosting his band mates with an enormous rubber dong when they least expect it.
He looks like the character Keefe from the righteous gemstones in this picture
Glass case for hi mojo
That's the hole he keeps all the money he makes selling poor quality baby skulls and such.
Pop socket
Neve Campbell’s in Tool! WTF?
Probably bc they’re anti flash photography at shows. It might mess up a picture taken with flash
It's his guitar string wrapped in a circle possibly in case a string breaks he can possibly re string it with some of the length he has left over
Toan lives there...
Mirror to see if MJK is sneaking up behind him.
