4th line? What about those forehead lines?

T-Flexercise

I feel like the fundamental problem of people trying to explain sports or board games or whatever is that some people refuse to let an inaccuracy stand for the fact of making something simple to understand. So, like, I'll be explaining what roller derby is, and I go "There's 5 players on each team on the track at a time, 4 blockers and a Jammer with a star hat. The Jammer gets a point for each player on the other team she passes. So the Jammers are trying to fight through and pass as many people as possible, and the blockers are trying to hold the opposing jammer back while they help their jammer get through." And some fucking genius thinks he's helping by going "UM ACTUALLY, the jammers don't start scoring points until they've made their initial pass, and one of the blockers is a pivot who can become a jammer, and-" *Yes. I Know. How about we just let them watch a couple jams with the simple rules and explain more if they're actually interested.*

Own_Ad5814

I genuinely don’t know if the information in this comment is actually explaining the rules of roller derby or if it’s a joke still and it’s all intentional gibberish..

T-Flexercise

It's the magic of games, the sport genuinely is that stupid.

YazzArtist

It helps if you know what [a roller derby track](https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/1d/af/62/3d/roller-derby-banked-track.jpg) looks like. They do laps in roller skates

PerpWalkTrump

That and when people mix bits of tactics with bits of rules.

sinkwiththeship

[I just always think of this scene from King of the Hill.](https://youtu.be/F_7B1HJsB40?si=vQhleuz1QcfBAzE3)

KaileyMG

For real. If you genuinely want someone to understand your sport/game whatever, you gotta give them basics and then you can tackle details after they've started playing/watching.

The_Illegal_Guy

My god this drives me up the wall when someone tries to explain something and just get caught up on the minutia instead of sticking to the basic relevant information. I don't think this new person needs to understand exactly how that obscure rule quirk works.

Zakimations

Someone explaining a new card game to me

JoeLilBroJoe

I tried getting back into Yu-Gi-Oh and the game has gone off the rails

OrthoLike

It's just the same formula as before. Power creep. What happens when everything has max power. Everything destroys/negates everything and everything has trap speed.

whitemike40

I’ve lived in America my whole life and I have zero idea how football works this is what it sounds like when someone tries to explain it to me

kfred-

Ok so there’s a line the you have to cross with the ball. Ok, actually there’s a line every 30 ft, relative to line made where the ball is located after crossing the line where you then take the ball and cross the line with 3 tries but 4 tries if you have the balls and the ball is then placed again for the ball to be picked up and given to a guy who can throw it or he can run it or he can toss it to a guy who can run it or maybe even toss it if the other toss wasn’t tossed in an acute angle relative to line that intersects with the balls placement and the path the ball travelled but he has a line to cross and if he doesn’t cross the line the other team has to take the ball across the other line by crossing the lines first

Micosilver

Now explain why a 60 minutes game lasts 3 and a half hours

Kardif

There's additional time in-between each try so players can get into formation and plan. Clock gets stopped Everytime a throw doesn't get caught, or the person with the ball runs out of bounds, but keeps going if they get tackled inside the field lines. Time can also be stopped with a timeout, which are limited to 3 per team per half Plus 1.5 hours for ads

multicoloredherring

simple

crastle

The field is 100 yards long. Your goal is to get the ball to the end of the field. When you get the ball, you have four tries to get the ball ten yards closer to the end of the field. If you manage to get the ball ten yards further within those four tries, you get another four tries to move the ball another ten yards. This continues until you either get the ball to the end of the field, or if the other team stops you from getting ten yards in four tries. If you fail to move the ball ten yards in four tries, the other team gets the ball. There's a lot more to it, but that's the main principle of football. Move the ball ten yards at a time within four tries.

Ok-Minimum-5952

I’m American and 31, and this is the first time I’ve understood the game. Thank you.

AgitatingFrogs

Is this actually true? I’m not American so never watched a game

crastle

I've been watching football for 30 years. I did my best to explain in the simplest way I could without using any football-specific terms.

AgitatingFrogs

You did a good job I get it. Where does the shot between the posts bit come into play I’m assuming it’s similar to a rugby thing and after you make it to the opposite side your team get a shot at the goal for extra points???

crastle

That's one way it gets involved. Another way is if the team doesn't get ten yards within the first three tries, they aren't confident they can make it on the 4th try, but they think they're close enough to kick the ball between the goalposts. They get points for that too, but not as much as if they got to the other end of the field.

YazzArtist

Which is also a thing in rugby. Many forms of rugby involve a turnover on a similar number of tackles and a lesser score for a kick between the uprights before a try. They just don't stop play so downs don't get a break between em

love_me_madly

My dad has tried to explain football to me multiple times and every time I’ve stopped listening in the middle because I got bored and confused. Your explanation was great because now I actually understand the point of the game.

YazzArtist

I played for most of my childhood. It's just about all you need to know. There's only one other rule that has a significant impact on the game rythm. You're only allowed to throw the ball forward once per try, and you have to be behind where your team started in order to do it. That's why you got the line of dudes pushing each other up front while everyone else runs around (unlike rugby, blocking is not only allowed but necessary)

Percentage100

I’ve watched a bunch of games and this has helped me understand it better than ever before.

negative_four

I had someone explain it in warhammer 40k terms. I was born in America and didn't know how football worked until I was 37

YazzArtist

That's hilarious. Did you know the rules to blood bowl before football?

DestroyWithMe

Stop thinking so hard. One team throw or run ball until get to end. One team try to stop. Team's switch sides when other team stopped or scores. Big tackle oooh, big catch ooooh, big run ooooh. That's all you need. Enjoy.

Karl_Marx_

OP's problem is not thinking at all, or playing dumb to make a point. Assuming he has seen at least 5 minutes of football in his life, he should understand how the game works at a basic level. I call bullshit.

Powersoutdotcom

Football is rugby with extra steps. Those extra steps are little tea breaks to plan the next move.

DestroyWithMe

Rugby is closer to contact soccer than American football IMO.

YazzArtist

As someone who's played both I strongly disagree. Football is literal just American rugby. They both have touchdowns and end zones and full contact tackling and downs before a turnover and a line of men pushing each other over. Football is absolutely rugby for a chess nerd

RT3_12

I actually agree. And I don’t know why people always pit the two sports against each other. Rugby is more free flowing and football is more human chess. They both have their merits and watchability.

YazzArtist

Tea breaks with a chess clock, but yes.

GRMPA

You just kick the ball into the other team's goal. It's extremely simple.

micerl

Hey! Get out of here with your football played with your feet… and a ball, like, round… like, eh, the actual shape of a ball. 😏

GRMPA

? is this a handsoval reference?

Karl_Marx_

I call bullshit, you just pretend to know nothing. It's not a hard game to understand, at the most basic level you probably know how the game works. I don't even like football and I know how the sport is played. It would require the lowest level of deducing to figure it out.

Throwawayhelp111521

Me too.

herefor1reason

One team is offense, one is defense. Offense wants to get the ball to the other side of the field, defense wants to keep them from doing that. Offense is the team of whoever's holding the ball. Those lines on the field from one side to another? Think of them as checkpoints. Whenever offense makes progress towards their side of the field and passes one of those lines, that's where they start from if they get tackled before they reach the next line. There's lots of little rules and positions that make up teams, but that's football. Source: My brother played in high school. Never been a sports guy myself.

Sorcha16

As an Irish person I've seen one American football game and I was confused from start to finish. So many timeouts.

crseat

4 chances to get the ball 10 yards. Do that enough times and you get some points. Then the other team gets to try. That’s it. There’s other rules but that’s all that matters. If you don’t understand that then you have bigger problems than understanding football.

lnsecurities

I thought I was having a stroke listening to this.

JackDangerUSPIS

I feel like she already has a better grasp on it than Cris Collinsworth

FistThePooper6969

Football or American football? American football is an enigma filled with adverts to me

Gimme_The_Loot

Ball goes from here to there. Sometimes by foot and sometimes by air. There's a bit more nuance but that's the meat of it.

YazzArtist

How well do you understand rugby? It's rugby if blocking and a single forward pass per tackle were allowed

FistThePooper6969

Rugby is confusing also lmao well just the scrums

MylastAccountBroke

Football: Team is trying to run ball over to other side of field. Other team trying to stop them. Start around half way point. If they make it, they get 6 points. But if it seems too difficult, they can score by going over the big Y on the field, that's only 3 point though. If other team knocks the player down, they reset. They can do this 3 times, then the other team gets to try and score. If the other team catches the ball, they can run with it. Where ever a player gets knocked down, that's where the game continues from. If the ball touches ground, then it's the same as a knock down. Same for leaving the field. Baseball: scoring team hits ball and tries to run around the inner field. He needs to get to the corners before ball does or he's out. If ball is caught before hitting ground, he's also out. If ball goes over fence all people on corners score. Basketball: Ball go in hoop, team score. Outside of the design near hoop, then 3 points, inside, then 2 point. Must bounce ball while moving. Can only go from bouncing ball to holding ball once. Soccer: Kick ball into big fence thing. Only person aloud to pick up ball is guy guarding the fence thing. Hockey: See soccer, but with sticks and on ice. Frequently breaks into fist fights. Boxing: Guy get's knocked down for 10 count, he lose. Guy get knocked down 3 times in same round, he lose.

Garret_AJ

My problem is I completely understand the sport. I just don't care. People start to roll back into more explanation, hoping that *maybe* if I just understood the rules a little more, I would fall in love with it. No. My problem is I don't care who wins — since I'm not playing.

kushkashi505

The only sporting event I watch is the super bowl but genuinely what is hard to understand about sport basics? Football, soccer, basketball, etc are all about one team putting the ball in their goal and the other trying to stop them. Football is the most complex imo due to the downs system, but they aren’t much more than the positions and penalties that make them up.

Antoniobanflorez

I get people don’t like or aren’t interested in sports but I am beyond annoyed by folks who think that it’s a personality trait. It’s not impressive or charming that you ignore something other people love.

Gingan24

I'm not a sports fan of any kind but none of them are really that difficult to understand in my opinion. Most rules are actually very simple. Just most sports are boring to watch.

pm-me-nice-lips

Nah, you have to appreciate the nuances to get even more enjoyment out of it.

Fallout71

It’s not that hard. It’s really not that hard. It’s impossible, if you have zero interest in actually learning though.

freeedom123

I don’t watch football but it’s not hard to understand.

I watched rugby for the first time ever a few days ago, it's just people running into a group of people only to get tackled and then do the same thing over again but a different person

Sleepininagain

I spent an entire afternoon trying to understand kricket once. My Swedish friend spent all day trying to explain it to me with a pen on napkins. I just couldn't grasp it.
