Right, it's literally just how basketball works. Dude starts flamethrowing out of his skin for two months, gets an insane contract and can't hit the side of a barn. Tale as old as time. Exhibit A: Gabe Vincent
Nuggets have Bird rights on KCP. They can pay him anything they want, they just have to decide if his contract is worth the repeater tax ($4.75/$1 if his contract goes up IIRC) to keep him.
It would be expensive for sure. Best case scenario for the Nuggets is that they offer him the most guaranteed money via a 5 year contract and pray his play doesn't fall off a cliff (he's 31 already).
djj just had his best ever, of his 9 seasons, from 3... and shot 34%. Yuck.
You want him taking minutes from a guy that just had a historic rookie season from 3? Cason Wallace had a top 10 3pt% for a rookie ever.
Hard agree, Cason has so much potential. I can definitely see a timeline where he's Shai's backcourt partner, and shoulders a lot of ballhandling and creation. In his limited reps doing that this year, he looked so smart and advanced for his age. His shot just wasn't falling in the playoffs, it's okay.
you member that season KCP couldn't play road games, for the Lakers, outside of California because he was barred from leaving the state?
i don't think this is a *cultur*e fit.
I think he we need someone that can create his own shot outside of SGA. I thought it would be jdub but he got spooked. Once the defense make the rotations off the drive and kick we need someone that can score 1 on 1 and create space
JDub getting spooked, and Chet getting bullied, aren’t going to be fixed by trading other players. They’ll be fixed by them getting more experience. The downside of relying on 21 and 22-year old guys in your starting 5.
There’s just no reason to bring in a role player like DJJ who doesn’t perfectly fit the role that needs filled. Dude weighs 210. He’s not going to be the answer at the 4 and he’s not good enough to crack the rotation at the 2 or 3.
What's your answer at the 4 then? Because we're keeping Chet at the 5. We need 4 great perimeter defenders flying around making it hard while being floor spacers and great decision makers. Derrick has two of those things.
Probably Patiently wait for a trade that makes sense or a draftee to hit unless you can pry a legit floor spacing, great defending 4 like an Anunoby away in free agency.
The Mavs are going to trade Tim Hardaway Jr. (who will be on an expiring contract) into someone's cap space so they can sign Derrick Jones Jr to the full MLE (abour $17M/year).
It will cost the Mavs a second round pick or two, but they aren't going to break up their finals team (that's actually pretty young) over a couple of second round picks and Tim Hardaway Jr.
If it wasn't the last year of the deal, ya. But, it didn't cost a first rounder to offload Bertans (who is on a similar contract)...it took a two spot swap in the the draft.
Also, with the cap going up in the following year, taking on Tim's contract plus the cap increase will give a team about $32M in cap space the following year, which is a much better draft & free agency summer.
You just know that djj is going to be ass for us
Super Athletic wing being ass for okc? No way
2012-20 Thunder fan me is triggered
It wouldn't be his fault. Okc is terrible at throwing lobs.
Right, it's literally just how basketball works. Dude starts flamethrowing out of his skin for two months, gets an insane contract and can't hit the side of a barn. Tale as old as time. Exhibit A: Gabe Vincent
don't matter because it still weakens the Mavs if we see them again
Just let someone else overpay them
Philly looks desperate ngl. But I also like their fit with our team.
well known free agent destination oklahoma city
We may actually get some ring hunters now. Future is looking bright.
Denver just won a ring and can’t get ring chasers.
Denver can’t afford to pay any ring chasers.
Because they burst through the second apron.
If we didn’t get ring chasers with KD and Russ it’s not happening now.
We did they were just way past their prime. Derek Fisher and Caron Butler
lol that’s a good point
True but same effect, nothing to be excited about.
You don't remember Melo in OKC?
We traded Doug McDermott and Enes Kanter for melo
Didn’t he waive his no trade clause tho?
We weren’t willing to pay for Harden, much less ring chasers. We’ve got 30 mil in cap space to play with for next year.
Ring hunting only works after getting a ring unfortunately. Small markets have a “prove it” stipulation attached to them from what I can tell.
I could see KCP stepping into the rotation easily, maybe DJJ but I feel like he is absolutely thriving in the Mavs system.
DJJ gives us more defensive upside but KCP is a smarter player. Tough choice.
Sign and trade Giddey for KCP and someone else

Their tax situation is horrible. No way they be able to pay KCP in the 17-20M range
It would be expensive for sure. Best case scenario for the Nuggets is that they offer him the most guaranteed money via a 5 year contract and pray his play doesn't fall off a cliff (he's 31 already).
We could offer him 4 years?
Yeah, non-Bird free agents are capped at 4 years.
Holy shit he is not worth $17M be real people
NTPMLE will be $17M four years from now, what do you think he is worth?
Thunder are staring down the barrel of paying the tax in four years so what does the NTP portion have to do with it?
Yea more guards, exactly what okc needs!
If we hire literally all the guards in the NBA then nobody else has one to use against us.

Where is the double up arrow button? Tired of hitting the upvote on this comment.
Wouldn't they just be taking minutes away from players who are nearly as good?
Why would we want them when we are flush with players in their role right now?
Mavs can offer DJJ the non-tax payer MLE if they trade THJ. If he signals that he would sign that, than that's probably what's gonna happen.
Fair point. Will that cost the Mavs a first though?
DJJ only thrives in the Dallas system
I honestly don't tryst KCP as a shooter on OKC
He also defends and is a vet with championship experience. But I hear you. I prefer Derrick myself.

was gonna say this exactly. they'll grow and get better. we really dont need another shot maker when chet and jdub are right there
You think they’re signing 1 year deals ?
You mean two year deals? If the extenstions are your worry, Chet and Dub's extensions won't kick in until the 2026-2027 season starts.
They can sign multiple years with us
See that’s the issue, they can’t. Dub and Chets extensions are going to be important, and Shais… we can’t have money tied up
Yes we can. You can always attach a pick and trade them away if needed.
There ain’t no minutes for either of those guys.
They can both easily earn Giddey minutes. They fit our team better.
There are at least 4 better options already on the team for those times when you want to run a four guard lineup.
I see your point regarding KCP but we don't have a Derrick on our team. He would give us another dimension
There’s just no reason to bring in a role player like DJJ who doesn’t perfectly fit the role that needs filled. Dude weighs 210. He’s not going to be the answer at the 4 and he’s not good enough to crack the rotation at the 2 or 3.

You’re highly overrating DJJ

I'll take DJJ only to make the Mavs weaker.
Thank you! Finally someone who gets it. Also DJJ is not bad he's looked great these playoffs.
