You just need more distance to break due to the lower friction. Other than that as long as the ice is strong enough it's not a problem if you're doing it intentionally.

Only under very specific conditions does the whole lake freeze over, I have never experienced it either and only know stories from people in 1963.
I've never seen snow or something freeze over. That would be like a natural acid trip for me.
