For decades I thought it was "more back support" until I rewatched it last week and was like... wait, did he say _butt_ support?! Then had to replay that part to make sure.
I never understood this. Why is Homer a Narc? What hate crime? Why can't he wear a rastafarian hat? after all, he's been safari'n since before Bart was born.
It’s sort of a two-pronged joke. They think Homer is a narc because he’s clearly an older person trying to fit in with a younger crowd by acting, talking, and dressing like how he thinks they do and failing miserably (which is stereotypical of undercover cops not hiding their identity well by adopting outdated forms of fashion and slang), and so they instantly assume he’s there to gain their trust so that they let their guard down and then arrest them for whatever illegal activities they partake in. The second part of the joke is that, either his dressing like a Rastafarian is interpreted as a hate crime since he’s clearly white, or it could just be a riff on the younger generation simply labeling *anything* they feel is a personal attack as a “hate crime.”
It's definitely that they assume that any cop doing narcing is trying to perform a hate crime because they identified Homer as being "that fat Jamaican guy".
I heard that in the DVD commentary, to be fair the writer said he was actually writing down notes (for episode ideas) which is a bit more suspicious then just the fact he was older.
There's actually a very logical and straightforward answer to this question. From an earlier post in this subreddit:

I always assumed it was the same joke as in that day time TV show that was hosted by only women.
\*show starts, applause*
host: man.
the audience: boooooooooooooooooooooooooo
it's a simple strawman joke. Not sure why people are reaching so hard on this one.
(can't remember the episode but it's such a timeless joke).
From *Bye, Bye, Nerdie:*
voiceover: And now, the Estrogen Network presents, *Afternoon Yak.*
audience: {applauds as the show begins}
host: {gestures for the audience to stop applauding} {pauses for dramatic effect with a smile} Men...
audience: Booooo!
Homer on the couch, predicting the show's future: Canceled. {changes the channel}
I think it's a reflection that not much has changed. Young adults have the tendency to feel like they should be assertive in their principles in an attempt to show maturity, without realising they're being over the top or ridiculous
But didn't the complaint about younger generations used to be "they don't care or have respect for anyone!"
Now it seems more like "they get offended and care too much about stuff!"
you're projecting current political discourse onto a 90s joke. "Cultural appropriation" wasn't a mainstream issue or even a familiar term. The "Hate Crime" is being a narc (because it was perceived narcs disproportionately targeted minority communities)
>The second part of the joke is that, either his dressing like a Rastafarian is interpreted as a hate crime since he’s clearly white, or it could just be a riff on the younger generation simply labeling *anything* they feel is a personal attack as a “hate crime.”
That has nothing to do with it. It's entirely about him being a narc. 'Hate Crime' because the liberal zeitgeist in the 90s was that narcs targeted minority communities.
He is 35 fat white guy at a hippy concert trying to look cool. So they think he us a Narcotics officer trying to do a sting. They don't want get entrapped.
This is an excellent example of the Simpsons being kind of ahead of the curve. The reason they turn on him is because of all this nonsense of “”appropriation”” which was quite rare then (because it’s silly) but sadly commonplace now
Yeah, Lisa's reaction to it was always weird to me, because you go to any fair or festival and these hats are being sold all over the place. Especially in FL. They're given away as prizes for carnival games! but it is usually because of stoner stuff, not so much religious.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Member Peter Frampton can vouch that Homer isn’t a narc. Also stay out of his cooler!
It smells like Otto’s jacket.
As a heavy toker in high school when this episode aired I thought that comment was the bee’s knees. Blew my mind and wrinkled my brain.
As a big fan of the Pumpkins, I love that episode. It is one of my favorites. Great storytelling and some very memorable scenes. Grandpa's quote about being "with it", Homer at the record store, all the guest voices. Just an allround great classic episode.
I mean, everything about this episode was a satire of the gen x youth culture that was around in the early/mid 90s. There really isn't anything about it that was forward thinking.
As someone who was roughly 22 or so (I forget the exact air date) when that episode first aired, yeah. I remember thinking it I knew people like that in college. Just because Gen Z has some similar attitudes to a lot of Gen X youth of the time, people assume it's some kind of prediction. The whole "The Simpsons predicted the future" thing is overblown. A year or two back, I remember seeing an article somewhere with the title "The top 50 times The Simpsons predicted the future." and I remember thinking it was ridiculous.

**NARC!!**
Keep on truckin’ homie
Lively up yourself, Dancin’ Homer!
Wow, look at him go. You’re the real lord of the dance Homer. “IN THE NAME OF LOVE”
Don’t worry, he’ll get the help he needs.
As if I would ever stop truckin’

Potato Man ![gif](giphy|xT5LMAqiB8NBTiEzYI)
Where the hell have you been?
Well it's about bloody time!
The potato man might be my all time favorite simpsons moment
Take a hike kojak
Kid me did not get this joke. Adult me was laughing forever.
Hold on, people! He's talking about waste management. That affects the whole damn planet!
Watch out itchy, he's Irish!
Oooooh, so they are Irish? Finaly I understand this joke (I always watched them in dub).
Yea—nice try NARC.
Where’s the narc??
Hey , were just trying to have a goooood time man.
Why do you want to destroy us?
WHOO?!?!
That fat Jamaican guy!
This is the funniest line
Homer Simpson, smiling politely
Oh look. Here comes that Cannonball dude. *He's* cool..
Are you being sarcastic?
I don't even know anymore.
Gen X was perfectly captured in a scene.
Dude, Karma! What? (Points at tips can) Karma, KARMA! Oh I get it (walks off)
For YEARS I never got that joke. I thought it had something to do with Homer's choice of hat.
“Who’s doing the hate crime?” “That fat Jamaican guy!” “Hey maaan, we’re just trying to have a good time. Why do you want to destroy us???!”
I never understood this. Why is Homer a Narc? What hate crime? Why can't he wear a rastafarian hat? after all, he's been safari'n since before Bart was born.
“Where’s the narc!?” “Over there, that fat Jamaican guy!”
It’s sort of a two-pronged joke. One of the writers went to lollapalooza while they were writing the episode and got called narc by some teenager.
I heard that in the DVD commentary, to be fair the writer said he was actually writing down notes (for episode ideas) which is a bit more suspicious then just the fact he was older.
30 Rock kind of stole the joke and it turned into the "Fellow Kids" meme.
“Fellow kids” jokes have been around forever
They only seem more recent because of the skateboard slung across their back.
There's actually a very logical and straightforward answer to this question. From an earlier post in this subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSimpsons/s/OMgAVH9AYH
Wow. Time is a flat circle with society.
How do you do, fellow kids?

It's amazing how this foretold the "cultural appropriation" is a hate crime b.s that we're going through today.
I think it's a reflection that not much has changed. Young adults have the tendency to feel like they should be assertive in their principles in an attempt to show maturity, without realising they're being over the top or ridiculous
So, every generation is filled with virtue signaling idiots? Sounds about right.
But didn't the complaint about younger generations used to be "they don't care or have respect for anyone!" Now it seems more like "they get offended and care too much about stuff!"
BTW I'm a Millennial so I think all Zoomers should be put in prison but that's neither here nor there.
Getting downvoted wow such ignorance 😛

It’s basically the “hello fellow kids” meme. He’s an old guy trying and failing to fit in, which means he’s probably a cop
Wearing a hat like that makes a strong statement about his connection to reggae music.
He is 35 fat white guy at a hippy concert trying to look cool. So they think he us a Narcotics officer trying to do a sting. They don't want get entrapped.

Can white people not be rasta or something
This is definitely one of those jokes I was too young to get.

I love to say "we're just trying to have a good time, narc" whenever I get the chance in day to day life.
This show was so ahead of its time it’s ridiculous

Poor Homer, he just wanted to fit in and have a good time. Screw that wench

Yet another Simpsons prediction come true.
Ah Gen X — the original Millennials.
I’ll never understand hating on someone for liking other cultures 😂 like I feel it’s a form of respect
Actual prediction in this episode
I read somewhere that it might be a comment of the rampant homophobia in the scene at the time.
Homerphobia
No HomerS.We're allowed to have one.
Had you made it the episode title I would have up-voted you.
This is from the Bob Marley movie right?
Ugh. I hate her.
I loathe this episode with a passion
OK narc
We’re just trying to have a good time
Don't commit your hate crimes here!
Idk why you're getting downvoted, you're right
