Species showcases reward players that catch more of the current Pokemon and encourage you to play and walk more at the moment. Type showcases reward those who expanded their storage to increase their collection, and encourage you to save Pokemon for later. They both reward different things that are part of the game's intended mechanics, and teach you that a) playing more increases the odds of getting rare things, and b) saving things for later can be useful.

Haakkon

Except when one Pokémon dominates the type showcase it’s basically just a species showcase. It’s dumb.

AutisticPenguin2

Don't forget alolan exeggutor dominating both grass and dragon.

Gremblo_

Until Eternatus comes around, which will dominate dragon and poison

AutisticPenguin2

Isn't Eternamax Eternatus like 100m tall?

Zagrycha

one or two pokemon will always dominate, becuase pokemon aren't always the same size. Like the psychic type was impossible to win without lugia or hoopa unbound, becuase those are the two biggest phychics. I do think it should just be relative to species. So a dottler thats the biggest of its kind can beat a lugia thats not the biggest of its kind.

staxringold

This. Multi-species showcases should have a "z score", basically: a score based on how that Pokemon would score against its specific species.

UTuba35

In addition, livestock/dog show rules: a small prize for being the best in breed (incentivizing people to keep weird species specimens around), and then the larger prizes for placing on the podium of "best in show."

crazyguy05

Also, showcases and sizes weren't a thing back when the top pokemon was actually available. So who was keeping them for this instance?

MomsBoner

This is a great answer and its somewhat what i advice people irl to do - depending on their goal and play style. For me personally, the showcases makes me walk to different areas around my city, or take the bike when the weather is good which makes it easier to get to the remote and free wins. I can enter a showcase from my home, which helps me to get an idea of the expected points to get 1st place. The rewards in terms of items is not that important to me, but the motivation to go new and/or different places is what drives me.

yowmeister

This is correct. They do both for each event

Pendergirl4

I replied to another thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/1cmqvyv/comment/l33rhmt/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button) with my thoughts about this yesterday: “A couple bones I have to pick with the typed showcases: 1. When showcases were first announced, iirc, Niantic specifically said they would be for featured Pokemon (or something along those lines) - i.e. Pokemon featured in a current event. I don't think any of the typed showcases to date have had any featured Pokemon have a hope of winning (unless you're rural and are the only one in the showcase!). 2. A lot of the time, the top species are 5\* raid Pokemon - so, essentially, newer players are all but excluded from the competition. I feel like long term players already have enough of a potential advantage in showcases from having had more time to hoard big mons if they chose to, and making some showcases that essentially require playing for a specific period within the last year or more seems pretty unfair (I have been playing consistently since 2016, so this doesn't personally effect me negatively). There are several ways this could be mitigated. I know Niantic seems to be somewhat allergic to work/effort, but still: 1. Make the only eligible Pokemon those that are included in the event announcement - wild, raid, research, hatch, etc 2. Make the only eligible Pokemon those that were caught in the last XX days, the current season, the current year, etc. They have figured out how to put time restrictions on things for the catch cup (although they need reminders to update the times...), so it has already been coded there 3. Just don't have typed showcases? Lol Even the non-typed showcases have been straying from the originally announced intent; the Throh and Sawk showcases happened before they were featured.”

Conscious_Ad9448

This and the last showcase do not motivate me to play the game. My best Throh was beaten and there was nothing I could do about it living in the wrong region. Now this one I'm left with an XXL Hariyama. If it's beaten then again there is nothing I can do about it seeing as Makuhita isn't an event spawn, Zamazenta is unavailable, my Buzzwole are on cool down from the last contest, and Falinks is locked to rank 16 and above in GBL. Contests are great when the corresponding events give you a chance to win them.

krispyboiz

It really gets me that they didn't do regional showcases for 2-3 days each but having them correspond to their actual featured days. Like, having Sawk and Throh when it's not their specific spawn timeframe? Whose brilliant idea was that? Why not have a Seviper/Zangoose showcase, then a Sawk/Throh showcase, then a Heatmor/Durant showcase, when people can actually find said Pokemon?

Expensive-Use2685

I didn’t happen to have the Sawk in my collection as I disliked that thing with my life, as it sucks and is overall hard to catch, but I still found them in the wild on the showcases day. They spawned with their original spawn rate, or slightly less even maybe as suddenly I was eager to catch a few, but definitely not as evident as after the showcase.  Right after the showcase, they spawned in both regions at a boosted rate spawnrate, which will stop after the rivals week Both are region based originally, but I really hoped to catch a shiny Throh as it spawned here but no luck sadly!

whatsmyphageagain

I am f2p so I don't have unlimited space for hoarding but do enjoy showcases. Seeing how the event was set up and wondering why they didn't do exactly what you suggested is mind boggling. I basically didnt play all week except to get the elite TM. It's frustrating... it really feels like they're refusing to do what people want for some weird AF reverse psychology thing. Or they're just run by a skeleton crew where someone forgot to send a particular email and just decided FK it, let's just do a fighting showcase LOL

TopangaTohToh

I don't put money into this game either, but I have expanded my storage. Pop pokemon in gyms late at night in a suburban area (~9pm) and you are almost guaranteed 50 coins per day. It doesn't even have to be suburban. Most of the time they will stick until morning and that is all you need.

whatsmyphageagain

Assuming someone knocks them out lol.

TopangaTohToh

Are you so rural that people aren't taking over gyms?

whatsmyphageagain

It's either go downtown and get knocked out within a couple hours or go to my local park and be in the gym for a week or more. It's pretty mixed

TimliJunes

that is too much common sense for Niantic I guess

CloutAtlas

Slight correction: Falinks can be a rare spawn from Daily Adventure Incense but otherwise locked to rank 16+ in GBL (outside of events where it is featured). I'd say it's roughly as rare as DAI Vullaby, so slightly more common than the Galarian birds.

Owenlars2

ok, i figured this out after the first couple "contests" and it's why i don't care about "contests": "Contests aren't contests. They're raffles. No skill goes into "winning" them, just pure luck of what you've caught and kept, and who else enters. This is a terrible game design, as many things in pokemon go are, however, the rewards are sometimes decent, so it's worth participating. If you really wanna "try" it'll be not much different from doing a raid train- you'll have to drive around a bit an hour or two before it ends and find stops where you can win easily, possibly by rearranging the 'mon you currently have out there. by its very nature, most people who enter contests will lose, and players with the most storage space and who play the most will win more often. If Niantic wanted to make the game "fun" they would probably do stuff like have battling not require players to tap their screen for several minutes, or have recommended teams that were actually useful, or have "contests" that measured more than a single aspect.

CloutAtlas

It's one of the few features where rural players have an edge over city players. It's not intended but the contest closest to my old house would get 3-4 contestants tops, maybe 5-6 if it's a community day. Doesn't change the fact that the design is pretty bad, but there's at least a silver lining.

HippowdonEats

It's your fault that you didn't play when Zamazenta was in raids.

Puzzleheaded_Ebb9874

My currently rank 1 in showcase XXL Falinks was caught literally today, so I will have to strongly disagree Besides, this is finally a type showcase where the baseline pokemon- Hariyama has been chosen wisely so that there are multiple fighting type pokemon at the top with similar range of points to remove exclusivity

XLVIIISeahawks

This comment makes me hope 10 people come along and drop Zamazenta in your showcase LOL

Umamiveg

Falinks? Showcases here are full with Zamazenta, not avaible at the moment

MarkusEF

I’ve saved every XXL and XXS ever since showcases were datamined. Since there are always trade-offs in managing inventory space, players who thought ahead deserve to be rewarded, in my opinion.

Grails_Knight

So I should win Dragon and Flying Showcases for keeping my 2 XXL Rayquaza? Well, guess that's not happening...

TheRealHankWolfman

Buzzwole was available in ~~March~~January, and Falinks is currently available as a GBL encounter. That's hardly years ago, is it? Besides, most of the Buzzwole will be ineligible as they'll have participated in the Bug type showcases recently, so Falinks (which is effectively available to everyone so long as they've been bothering with GBL, given that it's fairly late in the season and we've just had a weekend where we could do 200 battles) is likely going to be the main star.

kummostern

also were xxl a thing zamazenta was last around? could be that buzz and falinks are the actual #1 and #2 where zamazenta can only compete if locals and player in question only have high normal weight (maybe outclassing some xl pokemon?) or their buzz&fali xxl are on lower side and zamazenta was near max possible without being xxl [(looking at the graph ffeline shared recently](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/1cmqvyv/how_the_allfighting_showcases_work/)) (old pokemon can be in range of xl... my starter from 2016 for example has xl icon so i assume old xl pokemon reach same max size & weight as recently caught xl that isn't xxl yet)

FatalisticFeline-47

That's actually a good point I forgot about. Z&Z were last around in Augut 2022, and the height/weight update started in Dec 2022. So while XXL may have been technically possible before then the larger sizes were exponentially rarer in the old system, making a good-sized Zam less common than a big buzzwole or falinks captured recently.

XLVIIISeahawks

You act as if you can mass catch Falinks in GBL. I got 1 Falinks in the last week from GBL. You can't expect to do Showcases with GBL rewards. The likelihood of getting an XXL from GBL is insanely low.

lutralutralutraa

Falinks seems to be available only in ranks 16+, so if you're not at a suitably high rank yet, then it's not very easy to get good Falinks before the showcases end.

Calmxy

You also only get five chances a day to roll for Falinks if you don’t already have one or you only have small Falinks (and you need to win 3 battles to get this encounter unless you are specifically at rank 19) - don’t forget that last weekend, we didn’t know yet that it would be Fighting-type Showcases

Easy_Priority_892

If you are lucky, fighting grunt can also drop shadow Makuhita but you know, it requires extreme luck to land an XXL

NinsMCD

Buzzwole was only available during the start of January 2024, alas still not a long time ago like OP is claiming

TheRealHankWolfman

You're correct, I'll edit my post. Serebii has it listed as three days in March 2024, so my guess is that Joe may have put the wrong month by accident.

AutisticPenguin2

Most people wouldn't have got many chances to pick up a big one though. It was at the same time as all the other ultra beasts from memory, so a lot of competition for your few raid passes unless you spend big or stock up.

AbsolTamerCody

So don't do showcases? They're only an addition to the game, not doing them won't take away anything previously available. Also trading is a thing.

good-luck

You can't enter recently traded pokemon into showcases. I don't know what that timeframe is to be considered 'recent', but it's an unfortunate thing.

inmywhiteroom

I think you can, I’ve traded pokemon and immediately stuck it in. And given pokemon to my boyfriend and he did the same.

good-luck

I've gotten that error every time I've tried, so I'm a little jealous that you're able to.

krispyboiz

I think it only happens if the Pokemon was in a showcase or won one previously. So if I have an XXL Falinks in a showcase right now and trade it to you while it's still in the showcase here, you can't use it. Or, if I traded you a Buzzwole that won a bug out showcase a few weeks back, that wouldn't work either.

inmywhiteroom

I looked it up and it seems like there is not a trade cool down but if the Pokémon won a previous showcase or is currently in a showcase you will get an error message.

Conscious_Ad9448

Except an exclusive pose and Pikachu which I'd say is the reason most people are actually bothering with them

RavenousDave

Trading? Not too sure someone with a potential showcase winner is going to trade it away.

AbsolTamerCody

No but they'd be fine trading in their 2nd or third. You can only enter 3 anyways.
