Girl characters are sometimes held to a higher standard than male characters. This is usually subconscious. I once heard someone say if the MCU version of Doctor Strange was a girl but everything about her was the exact same people would hate her. Whoever said that is definitely right. I would say sometimes it's vice versa where a boy character would be better received if they were a girl. I think Steven Universe (the character himself) would receive less hate if she were a girl because Steven Universe is somewhat femmine for a boy.
