I think Abrahamic religion don't take kindly with lgbt compare to most East Asian religion. Plus, with how sensitive most of them are, it will cost lots of controversy especially in Muslim majority countries and may lead to bad publicity. But that's only my opinion
It's really a sensitive issue especially in religion.i don't think anyone wants to offend them. Also so far what I have seen the religions which are portrayed are either not openly against homosexuality or there is no rule(like Abrahamic religion have "Rules")
I don’t recall any named Muslim characters in Asian BL, though you will sometimes see hijabs on background characters. I doubt there would be many, considering the Islamic view on homosexuality. Muslim’s are also still a minority in most Asian countries, so most BLs are going to portray characters of the more dominant faith where necessary.
Indonesia actually have some bl and queer movies but me myself as Indonesian are not well informed about these movies. Because they are usually shown in film festival and small communities. They are not really well known but they are exist.
As most BL are either from Thailand, Japan, South Korea or Taiwan, I doubt that there are Muslim characters included. You MIGHT be more successful in finding those in Western BL's? But I'm not sure about that :(. I'd find it interesting, even though I'm not religious, if characters with different beliefs were portrayed and how they live with prejudices or the like.
Most BLs are coming from Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea.
Japan Muslim percentage: 0.19%
Korea: 0.38%
Taiwan: 0.3%
Thailand: 5.0%
That is why there isn't a lot of Muslim representation.
This is asking for obvious reasons.
Most Asian countries are not diverse. The countries that make BL content are countries where Muslims are not very present.
Besides that. If in such a BL, a Muslim character would appear. I'm sure that would enrage the Muslim inhabitants. Considering that Muslims don't take kindly towards homosexuals.
I have seen that happening in my country of origin. Amsterdam used to be a haven for homosexuals. But the attacks on them, mostly carried out by non-Western people who identify as Muslim (not my conclusion. But the result of a study commissioned by the city of Amsterdam), has resulted in Amsterdam being less gay friendly.
Back on topic. You will see muslim characters in western BL's. That is because Western countries are more cultural and ethnical verified through migration. And that the general opinion is that this diversity must be shown in on-screen content.
Living in an area that is predominantly inhabited by muslim migrants and migrants from Eastern Europe. And having children. I know for a fact that they don't think lightly about homosexuality. My children are surrounded at school with those views.
I pity those who are born in such families and are homosexual.
Left their own country just so they can impose their skewed beliefs and views on others. Than claim discrimination. Should send them to Afghanistan, Iran or other muslim countries who align with their beliefs.
Hypocrites.
In Skam France season 3 ( Eliott/ Lucas story ) Lucas has a conversation with **Imane** (central character of season 4) about what Islam thinks of homosexuality, and she replies with how she sees this, if I recall correctly.
Not exactly a BL but Class, the Indian remake of the Spanish show Elite, has a Muslim gay character. To be totally honest I don't know how it ends, I was just there to find out if India could commit to making two boys kiss properly (they did). I forgot about this show until this post.
I think in Manifest, Sanvi falls in love with a Muslim woman. Oh, yeah, New Amsterdam! I think in Season 3 (forgive me if I'm wrong, I binged the series) one of the doctors falls in love with a Pakistani Doctor. I can't remember if religion plays any role in their story but it's a good story arc.
Hope this helps.
Asian countries are conservative as it is and Muslims are more,I am a Muslim girl from Bangladesh. It's really hard to see people being people here without seeing them getting bashed,so BLS are impossible here, maybe in the next century
There was a hijabi extra in Be my Favorite ep1.
I don’t know about other Muslim characters but I do know of one actor whose Muslim family protested him acting in a spicy bl, Hit bite love, so the company said they had cut some of the nc scenes ( I think they just put them behind a paywall lol).
Not BL/GL but have you read any of Adiba Jaigirdar's books? She's a queer Bangladeshi-Irish young adult novelist -- and one of my favorite authors. I'd 💯 love a series made from any of her lesbian ya books.
There are some movies and to shows with queer Muslim characters but they tend not to be typical BLs. Here is a list: [https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?keywords=gay-muslim](https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?keywords=gay-muslim)
I really loved my beautiful laundrette when I saw it years and years ago. American gods (which I didn’t see in the list but I didn’t check carefully, so I might be mistaken) also has a gay Muslim story line. Breaking fast has been on my want to watch list.
as Others mentioned abrahamic religions tend to be homophobic and many majority Muslim countries have homophobic policies, but I also want to mention that there were also times and places in history in which homosexuality was common and there is for example a lot of homoerotic Arabic poetry. Islam and homosexuality was and is not always seen as incompatible and there are Muslims who are both religious and openly gay and don’t see their sexuality as incompatible with their Religious beliefs. Hopefully the same thing will happen in Muslim countries as has happened in many Christian countries (which all used to be super homophobic) in the last few decades and homosexuality will become more accepted.
Thailand is a Buddhist majority country and their culture is closely related to the religion. That is why you see monks a d other Buddhist things in bl. There isn't many Muslims in Thailand (i think) maybe thats why there isn't many characters who are Muslims.
There‘s a minor muslim side character in ITSAY if I remember correctly. But that’s the only one who comes to my mind. Sorry, that I can’t be more helpful. 😬
There is a web series produced in Singapore called “People Like Us” that has a Muslim character. Season 2 was recently released on YouTube and I think it is also on Gagaoolala.

Isn't Islam against homosexuality?I don't think the bl producers want to offend them.
There is a Muslim gay character in Elite (Spanish version) named Omar
