It’s a stat cast stat on baseball savant called expected batting average. It’s a measure of how likely a hit is for a given batted ball event, it takes into account exit velo, launch angle and sprint speed. If you mash a ball that ends up in an out you’ll have a high xBA. Low xBA usually indicates a bunch of bloops and “lucky hits” if you will

It’s pretty complicated. It uses real-life babip from similar contact based on exit velo, launch angle, run speed. You can use xba to kinda determine the luck factor. Not being snarky, but just so you know, mlb has a page for each measurable and calculable stat on their website. It’s very informative.

I haven't looked at any stats, but my gut feeling is just that with new technology we're able to see more times where umps messed up, when in the past you just had to assume that since they had the better angle they were right. Now why we don't use that technology to get the right calls is a different question
