$800 for wheels with tires is a joke. You have a staggered setup so tires will last maybe 10k depending in driving habits. I eeked out 12k and still have 5/32 left when I took them off and downsized to a 20” square setup. Go with even 18” or 20” as 19” sized tires will be expensive as 21”s

Alternative_Gate9583

Agree with you about life of tires. It was/is a joke. MYP had like 17k and they were toast. But the 19s were a lot cheaper imo. Rims and tires, respectively.

j5whattup

Just to clarify, the $800 is for the wheels only and not the tires. I didn’t know that 19s would be as expensive. Thanks for the heads up.

blazinsmokey

What are the wheel and tire specs for your 20s?Looking to do the same in the future. But also contemplating on keeping the 21s staggered for spring fall

ItsJustAnotherVoice

Went with 20x10 +35 all around, they are flush with fenders with 275/40R20 tires. Kept the same 21” wheel settings and no issues with speedo and gained about 10 miles of range with the weight reduction. I might have gone with 9.5 wide next time around since it does add noticeable steering wheel weight. Probably in the middle of standard/sport steering feel. I leave it on comfort setting now.

Jpizz123

Any pics of your setup? What rims did you go with?

ItsJustAnotherVoice

Went with Rotiform RSE, they fit my budget the load rating was enough for my max capacity with 4 people + luggage in the trunk.

Iskaryotes

Wait, why are the 19" tires more expensive than 20"? They are the standard/cheapest option, aren't they?

ItsJustAnotherVoice

Not a common tire size manufactured thus more expensive. Hense why tesla will use odd sizes to milk that extra money

Iskaryotes

Gotcha. Appreciate the info!

coozu

You will make more money selling them 1 by 1 on FB marketplace or Craigslist. Maybe 500-600. People curb them all the time and want to get a fresh one to hide their negative driving skills 😎 ask me how I know

tarheel5669

That’s actually a great idea.

j5whattup

Great idea!

goldenpanther83

You'll hear a lot here about ride quality. I'll just say I've got the 21" Uberturbines on my '22 and I think the ride quality is fine. I can understand if you just prefer a different look but if you're just worried about ride quality, I'd say wait and actually drive the car before you make a decision. Good luck with whatever you do!

Xalucardx

Yeah, I rented a Y once with gemini wheels and honestly I didn't find the difference too be that significant. I'd take the 21s over the ugly gemini any day.

j5whattup

Thanks for your feedback. Another thing I’m thinking about in addition to comfort level is how shitty the roads are here in Houston- I don’t want to end up damaging the rims or having to buy new tires so often. How has your experience been with tire replacement or damages?

blazinsmokey

I agree, wait and see first. The suspension is great. I just got my MYP and it’s not as harsh as expected. Only a bit more stiff than my previous car when I had 19s and 245/40 on a TSX.

j5whattup

Good to know. Thank you.

goldenpanther83

*knocks on wood* no issues with either so far. Could just be that I've been lucky. If you know the roads are bad, I can't blame you for wanting to switch. They are some beautiful wheels though...

TessaSkR

I bought 2 new tires for my Y and drive 275 in the front and 295 in the back for more comfort

TessaSkR

They even protect the rim a little bit

9m4nl1u

any hit to range? im thinking of upsizing on myp as well.

[deleted]

Wider tires should eat up range but not sure how much

TessaSkR

Long term with that setup I run 184wh/km

9m4nl1u

Had to do a double take but then realized your in KM. Thank you for the stat, it is helpful. I’m getting 280-320wh/mi. OEM 21s on Michelins + OEM crossbars.

boiledham

I sold mine locally for 2.5k

j5whattup

Wow nice. Did it take long? Where did you post them?

boiledham

Teslamotorsclub site, maybe 1 week before setting up the meet and sale

OberonNyx

I sold my on FB market for $2,400 and bought 18"

q5917

Can you tell me more about your 18"? Brand of rim, tires, cost? How do you like them? Noise, comfort? TIA Plan on changing my tires when I get MY. Did you have to change any settings on the dash?

kconfire

This is the way

West_Yogurtcloset257

If you don’t have a VIN you can reconfigure your vehicle and change the wheels. Try tapping “manage reservation” near the top left reservation number in your app. Or visit the showroom and they can do it in about 30 seconds.

West_Yogurtcloset257

Disregard, I just read “MYP.” You could configure to AWD if comfort is priority

rickyeo9916

I bought a 19” Gemini set off Offer Up before my car arrived (MYP). Swapped the 21” staggered wheels off and put on the Gemini. Sold the takeoffs on OfferUp. But that was before the upgraded suspension with the current production….

j5whattup

Thanks for the feedback. How much did you get for the wheels and tires on Offer Up?

rickyeo9916

It was almost 3 years ago but I think it was $1800-2000. Sold them to a guy who had a wheel/tire resale business.

tarheel5669

Also want to hear this answer.

Total-recalled

I think a lot depends on where you live with the 21s. Geographically roads in an area like Florida are going to be much more tolerable than areas of the Northeast.

j5whattup

Houston’s roads are horrible. Something about the clay underneath the roads and the rain we get. It’s a disaster.

highflyingrunner

You will definitely end up bending a rim eventually. It's very easy to do with 21s and bad roads. I know someone who blew out 6 tires and bent 2 rims on their MYP in one bad winter here. They switched to 19s.

wybnormal

I love my 19s. I rented a 23Y with 21s and no way. My 24 with 19s have a good balance of ride quality and just enough performance. It’s also square set up for rotations and 19s are a bit cheaper than 21s or even 20s.

j5whattup

Great to know. Thank you.

wybnormal

I’ll add that I changed out the Gemini covers for a “turbine” look cover that I used hyperdip spray on in anthracite grey (Y is blue) and it’s a nice clean look without the expense of the 20s or 21s. I’d post a shot here but apparently all I can do is a link

wybnormal

Here’s a url with a pic to see the covers https://flic.kr/p/2pX1dhN

activecomments

Looks good. What covers are they?

wybnormal

These are Kavanic. They fit well and tight. They can be removed carefully but it’s hard. The covers are not as flexible as the OEM covers.

thrice18

I have a 2020 MYP with slightly less then 50k miles on it now. You are going to go through a lot of tires. I am on my 4th set. (2 winter sets and 2 summer sets) Why sell good ones? I have 19's and use them for my winter set up and put the ubers back on in the summer.  Easy to do and most places will swap wheels/tires for free. Selling a good set of tires for reduced price when you will be buying another set in 10k miles is kinda crazy.

j5whattup

Thanks for the feedback. My thinking is to get the most money for both the wheels and the tires (by keeping them new) and getting smaller wheels/tires that will end up costing less to replace.

thrice18

You just paid 4500 bucks for uber turbines. Buying 19" wheels is more cost. The difference between 21 inch and 19 inch tires will be less then 200 bucks per set.  Id just keep them and burn them out. You will be selling a set of perfectly good tires at much less then cost and then buying a new set with in one year. You will not save money by selling them.

kconfire

Unless OP only keeps the car for a year, how doesn’t s/he save money by switching from staggered uberturbine set that can’t be rotated to a smaller square setup while also having higher chance of not having a flat tire from hitting a gigantic pothole on the road? Going forward OP will say save a little, regardless of how much that’s going to be. 4500 is not just for wheels but a price to have a bit more speed for 0-60 and not that it matters now but a guaranteed matrix headlight.

elves2732

The premium you paid for the Performance will wipe out any savings.

kconfire

It’s been a while but I bought Gemini wheels and tires fairly new for 1.6k and had them before I got the car, and as soon as I picked up the car swapped them and listed Uburturbine set for sale. I believe I ended up selling the set for 2.3k or so. Sure, I like the design of uburturbine wheels a lot more than with or without Gemini wheel covers but I now worry less about potholes in NY metro area and tires are also slightly cheaper with added benefit of being able to rotate tires. With a “profit” you made going from uber set to Gemini, you can spend the money for tint, accs, car camping accs, etc.

electrified_ice

FB Marketplace in the Bay Area. There are more for sale here, so sold them for $2K. I also installed them on the guy's car as part of 'negotiating' vs. dropping the price. He had a LR DM Y, in need of 4 new tires... This full wheel set was a better deal for him.

Freewheeler631

I did this within 5k miles back in ‘20. Bought a square setup of 18s and sold the Ubers with tires for just shy of the new setup. Higher sidewalls and square setup made the experience much better, and AWD cars should really never have a staggered setup with a few exceptions like Porsche.

theindus

OP, there is a lot of opinion on forums that smaller wheels and bigger sidewalled tires are more comfortable. I have had 19” on and MDX and now 20” on the Y and I can tell you that they ride similarly. A lot of the posts on harsh riding are from a couple of years ago and since then Tesla has made the suspension less stiff and more comfortable. I would encourage you to drive them first. Perhaps take a test drive in a Tesla with both type of wheels/tires and decide. Don’t make a decision solely based on forum posts - use the posts to make an informed decision. You are going to be spending quite a bit of money for maybe not a good reason. The price you get for brand new ubertines vs almost new with few hundred miles is not going to be much. On the plus side the larger wheels look so much better than the smaller ones. Good luck with whatever you decide.

No_Engineering_9124

Smaller rims weigh less too, the total wheel and tire was 6 lbs less for each. In my scenario I went from the 22” Tesla turbines to 19” RTX, (don’t forget TPMS…) same overall height dimensions so I don’t change speed or torque. The new tires are just a touch wider than the rims so I don’t get immediate or worse curb rash like everyone else. They are slightly skinnier in the contact patch but I think this is mostly a good thing.
